Athlon 64 Dual-Core Upgrade and NVIDIA's GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB SLI - Page 6 of 9

DOOM 3 PERFORMANCE

In the Doom 3 demo1 timedemo, a single GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB achieved an average frame rate greater than 60fps at 1600x1200 with no antialiasing, 2X antialiasing, and 4X antialiasing and at 1920x1440 and 2048x1536 with 2X antialiasing. The GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB also averaged 64fps at 1024x768 with 8X antialiasing and 41 fps at 1024x768 with 16X antialiasing.

The following JavaScript applet, which originally appeared in our MSI NX7800GTX SLI review, demonstrates the effects of each level of antialiasing that is available in Doom 3. Clicking the links underneath the image will reveal the screenshot that was taken with the chosen method of antialiasing enabled. Be patient while the image is downloaded from the server as they average around 50KB in size.

After each image is downloaded and saved in your browser cache, you will be able to quickly switch between them. The colored numbers indicate the levels of antialiasing that produced a significant image quality improvement in the marked area.

Note: To obtain the intended results of this image quality analysis, please set your Windows desktop resolution to 1280x1024. Then position your eyes about 12 to 18 inches from your monitor as you compare the images being presented by the applet.

Antialiasing Quality
Default Image - No Antialiasing - 2X Antialiasing
4X Antialiasing - 8X Antialiasing - 16X Antialiasing

The following settings were enabled when benchmarking Doom 3.

Doom 3 Settings

Results are from Doom 3's in-game benchmarking feature using the default demo1 timedemo. This series of results are from resolutions that range from 1600x1200 with no antialiasing to 2048x1536 with 2X antialiasing.

Doom 3 Performance - No AA and 2X AA

A single GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB averaged 66 fps at a resolution of 2048x1536 with 2X antialiasing, which is certainly playable.

The following results are with 4X, 8X, and 16X antialiasing enabled, which were set using the in-game menu.

Doom 3 Performance - 4X AA

With 4X antialiasing enabled at 1600x1200, a single GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB averaged 68 fps. Even with 8X and 16X antialiasing, a single GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB provides good performance in Doom 3. However, performance skyrockets when a second GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB is used (refer to the second chart below).

The next two charts plot the percent increase in the average from rate from a single GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB compared to the GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB in SLI. The first chart contains results with no antialiasing and 2X antialiasing enabled.

Doom 3 - Increase from SLI - No AA and 2X AA

This chart contains results with 4X, 8X, and 16X antialiasing enabled.

Doom 3 - Increase from SLI - 4X AA
