Introduction

Hitman: Absolution is the fifth entry in the Hitman game series and was developed by IO Interactive and published by Square Enix. It is an action-adventure stealth game and the PC version received a 76.13% rating at Metacritic. Hitman: Absolution runs on IO Interactive's proprietary Glacier 2 game engine. More information about Glacier 2 can be read in the following interview at Gamasutra.

The Glacier 2 engine was tailored to meet the demands of the development team and enable them to realize their vision for the game. It was important to show the vision and artistic style as Hitman: Absolution features dynamic lighting, dynamic shadows, and many post-effects and post-filters to support all the visual quality.

A key requirement for this vision was to use dense crowds, which allow players to interact with and influence the behaviour of each individual character. Glacier 2 was specifically built to create the various game features and additional qualities that the development team needed for the gameplay experience. Everything in the game is now based on real-time feedback within the game engine and every action is updating in real-time, which is a change from previous game engines.

Graphics Settings

The graphics settings used to benchmark Hitman: Absolution consist of the Medium, High, and Ultra Quality Level presets as shown in the screens below. Notice that FXAA, which can also be enabled in the NVIDIA Control Panel, is enabled in-game at the Medium Quality Level, which offers a high quality level of antialiasing right off the bat.

High quality adds support for Tessellation, which allows geometry to be "added on the fly" to increase the realism of in-game objects.

Benchmark Results

The first set of benchmarks were run at the resolution of 1920x1200 with Medium, High, and Ultra levels of detail along with 2x and 4x multisampling antialiasing.

At 1920x1200, the GeForce GTX 680 was able to deliver a minimum of 30 fps at all of the settings that were tested.

Results from 2560x1600 are shown below.

As expected, the hit from 2x and 4x antialiasing is greater at 2560x1600.

Wrap Up

Hitman: Absolution is a desirable game to benchmark due to its ease of use and advanced graphics features. The GeForce GTX 680 is able to achieve good results and provides a great gaming experience.
