What A Coincidence - 1/21/06 @ 6:57 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
A few minutes after making the upgrade article news post yesterday evening, I received a Stock Availability Notification email from EastLuna.com.

You requested a Stock Availability Notification at our web site on Saturday, December 31st concerning the XFX GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB GDDR3 XXX Edition PCIe Graphics Card and we just wanted to notify you that this product is now in stock and ready to ship. This product might be in limited supply, so if you really wanted to buy this product from us, you may want to order it sometime in the near future before it goes out of stock.

At that time, 10 were in stock and 6 were available at the time this was posted. At $750, the price is about 16% higher than NVIDIA's $649 suggested price, but this XFX model is overclocked out of the box - 580MHz core vs. 550MHz, 1.73GHz memory clock vs 1.70GHz.

If you are seriously considering the GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB, look over our upgrade article. The article contains gameplay performance in F.E.A.R. and Quake 4 and includes a full-length video from each walkthrough. The video is an excellent aid that allows you to compare the performance of your system under gameplay conditions.

GeForce 7300 GS - 1/18/06 @ 5:26 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
NVIDIA TAKES THE POWER OF GEFORCE 7 SERIES GPUS MAINSTREAM.

SANTA CLARA, CA —JANUARY 18, 2006—NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), the worldwide leader in programmable graphics processor technologies, today announced the new NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS graphics processing unit (GPU). The latest addition to the Company’s award-winning GeForce 7 Series line up, the GeForce 7300 GS boasts the video and gaming features of today’s most advanced GPUs to deliver stunning, high-definition video—up to 1080i resolution—and ultra-realistic gaming effects at mainstream price points without compromising performance. In addition, the GeForce 7300 GS GPU is primed for the upcoming Microsoft Vista operating system (OS).

“The GeForce 7300 GS GPU is an ideal foundation for today’s mainstream PCs because it offers high-definition video playback features that can not be matched by integrated graphics—and it is designed to have consumers ready for the transition to Microsoft’s next-generation operating system,” said Ujesh Desai, general manager of desktop GPUs at NVIDIA. “For a home theater PC, GeForce 7300 GS delivers exceptional video acceleration and incredible image quality to take the viewing experience to the next-level. For an entry-level gaming PC, GeForce 7300 GS delivers Shader Model 3.0 support and support for high dynamic-ranging lighting (HDR), which we expect new games will require in the future.”

NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS-based graphics cards are available for purchase at approximately $99 USD from many of the world’s leading add-in card makers. The Asia Pacific region will see immediate availability of GeForce 7300 GS-based add-in cards in time for Chinese New Year. Availability in Europe and North America will follow in early February. GeForce 7300 GS-based PCs will also be available from the world’s leading system builders starting in early February.

MSI 7800 GTX 512MB - 1/16/06 @ 7:58 pm - By: MaxPower - Source: N/A
I have posted my review of the MSI GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB (NX7800GTX-VT2D512E). F.E.A.R. at maxed out settings was the focus of this abridged review. I also compared against a 256MB 7800GTX in both single card and SLI configurations.

XFX 6800 GS Review - 1/16/06 @ 3:10 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Steve Angelly has posted a review of the XFX GeForce 6800 GS XXX Edition, which is overclocked out-of-the-box. Game performance is tested in F.E.A.R., Battlefield 2, Chronicles of Riddick, Far Cry, and Doom 3 with an Athlon 64 3700+ processor.

Steve also attempts to match the XFX card up with a reference GeForce 6800 GS to form an SLI configuration.

Was he successful? Find out here.

Quake Wars Previews - 1/14/06 @ 12:52 am - By: MikeC - Source: Game Forum
Computer & Video Games, EuroGamer, and Gamespot have posted previews of Enemy Territory Quake Wars. I'm a huge fan of Enemy Territory, which is free (Windows, Linux, Mac), and have been eagerly awaiting the sequel, which is based on the Doom 3 engine.

Here are a couple of tidbits from Computer & Video Games' interview with lead designer Paul Wedgwood of Splash Damage:

Q: Outside of the universe, what are the key ways in which Quake Wars will differ from the likes of Battlefield 2 and Unreal Tournament?

Paul Wedgwood: The first and most important thing is that Enemy Territory: Quake Wars has a focus on teamplay and pursuing specific military objectives. Each map is unique with unique objectives, a unique theme - like temperate or Arctic or arid environment - and a plot that drives you through these objectives, re-telling a story from the Strogg invasion. Unlike sports or arena-style games where you're Deathmatching or you're capturing flags, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars has a lot of focus on a specific frontline that progresses through the map.

Q: You mentioned the MegaTexture technology there and how it's being used with the Doom 3 engine. Could you give us a few more details on that?

Paul Wedgwood: During the early part of the project we realised we wanted to be able to render these huge outdoor areas and John Carmack is undoubtedly the best graphics programmer on the planet. He proposed, and then devised, the idea for the MegaTexture, which is a single unique texture that covers the entire landscape.

It's 32,000 pixels by 32,000 pixels, it creates a six gigabyte source file which we then have to compress to ensure good disk space usage but actually only ends up using 8Mb of video memory on a video card.

Discussion here.

WD Raptor 150GB - 1/12/06 @ 5:57 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
GamePC takes a look at the Western Digital Raptor 150GB drive, undoubtedly the fastest Serial ATA hard drive on the market today. The review includes speed testing in a RAID-0 environment with comparisons against the 74GB model.

Western Digital once again has stepped up and delivered a fantastic product with the Raptor 150, delivering just about everything enthusiasts were clamoring for as a follow-up for the Raptor 74. The new Raptor 150 boasts double the storage capacity, double the cache, and a native Serial ATA interface, not to mention the sleek black exterior which cements the drive’s image as a serious, enterprise class device. Gamers and enthusiasts will no doubt flock to the drive as well, just as they have done with previous Raptor drives.

X1800XT Crossfire Review at [H] - 1/09/06 @ 12:59 pm - By: MikeC - Source:
HardOCP posts their review of ATI's X1800XT Crossfire

As we sit here writing this introduction, it dawns on us that it has been three full months since we wrote our last CrossFire evaluation. During that passage of time, we really haven’t been hearing much about CrossFire. This is mostly due to the poor availability of X800/X850 series Master Cards. Furthermore, most people are really not choosing to put their money down on older technology but instead want to wait to pair up ATI’s newest technology in the X1000 series. Well that wait is finally over and X1800 XT Master Cards have finally been released.

NVIDIA and Dell Showcase First-Ever Quad-SLI PC

NVIDIA took its acclaimed SLI technology to a new level today by introducing support for the industry's first ever Quad SLI-certified PC. Delivering the most extreme high definition gaming experience available on the PC, Quad SLI features four of NVIDIA's flagship GeForce 7800 GTX GPUs each with two GeForce 7800 GTX graphics processing units (GPUs) on-board with an NVIDIA nForce4 SLI X16 motherboard.

This revolutionary technology was introduced today on the forthcoming Dell XPS 600 Renegade, as part of a keynote presentation by Michael Dell at CES in Las Vegas, NV.

John Medica, senior vice president, Product Group at Dell, stated: "Our demonstration of the first Quad SLI PC with NVIDIA is a major technology innovation, that when combined with the Dell XPS 600 Renegade and the new Dell 30-inch flat panel makes true high definition gaming a reality."

NVIDIA Quad SLI technology allows consumers to:

  • Run today's hottest games at extreme high definition (HD) resolutions-including an unbelievable 2560x1600 -- at silky smooth frame rates
  • Crank up their image quality with 32x antialiasing and 16x anisotropic filtering
  • Maximize their shader and texture settings for a truly immersive gaming experience

"Today's demonstration of the new Dell XPS 600 Renegade with our Quad SLI technology takes gaming to new levels," said Dan Vivoli, executive vice president of marketing at NVIDIA. "The ability to run today's hottest titles in extreme HD resolutions with all the eye candy turned on is absolutely amazing. Strap yourself in, because you are in for the ride of your life."

In addition, NVIDIA announced that Dell will be shipping the award-winning NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX 512 in the Dell XPS 600 PC.

As part of this technology demonstration, the Dell XPS 600 Renegade Quad SLI PC will be on display in the Dell booth (South Hall # 36521) and NVIDIA booth (South Hall #36200) at CES 2006, January 5-8th, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

NVIDIA has issued a slew of press releases today from the Consumer Electronic Show, which is being held in Las Vegas from January 5-8.And this just in:

NVIDIA DEMONSTRATES HIGH DEFINITION PROCESSOR LEADERSHIP AT CES

High Definition Gaming and High Definition Video are Ubiquitous at the NVIDIA CES Booth

LAS VEGAS, NV—JANUARY 4, 2006—As the digital age becomes more pervasive, high definition visuals are becoming increasingly important. A walk through the NVIDIA tradeshow booth at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), being held this week in Las Vegas, could leave you with the impression that NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) is the center of the digital revolution—as high definition games and high definition video abound on a variety of platforms, all driven by powerful NVIDIA graphics and video processors designed to deliver smooth high definition playback and pristine image quality.

At CES this year, the digital revolution is on display from January 5-9 at the NVIDIA booth, located in booth number 36200 in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

"NVIDIA has an exceptional track record for technology leadership and execution in creating computer chips that process digital information quickly with high quality output," stated Rob Csongor, vice president of worldwide marketing at NVIDIA. "The shift to digital media places NVIDIA in an enviable position because we can apply our expertise to new high definition formats and drive our award-winning technologies into new mobile and digital video platforms."

The NVIDIA CES booth offers a HD experience for almost any digital media application.

ATI X1800 Crossfire - 1/04/06 @ 6:02 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
GamePC's Chris Connolly takes a look at ATI’s Radeon X1800 Crossfire Edition. The Radeon X1800 512 MB Crossfire Edition card is now shipping, allowing users to connect their existing Radeon X1800 XT and XL cards for Crossfire configurations.

Performance wise, Radeon X1800 512 MB cards in a Crossfire configuration still trail nVidia’s GeForce 7800 GTX 512 MB cards in an SLI configuration. However, at the time of writing, nVidia’s cards have completely dried up on the market and are nearly impossible to find. The lack of cards has sent prices through the stratosphere, and an SLI configuration using these cards is almost out of the question at this point.

If and when 7800 GTX 512 MB cards return to their intended MSRP, which is close to that of two ATI Radeon X1800 XT cards, two of these cards would still be the most desirable option at this point. We base this on the fact that nVidia’s cards can deliver better performance, will produce less overall noise, and do not require an external dongle in order to connect the cards together. All in all, nVidia still has a more refined solution at this time.

CES Press Releases - 1/04/06 @ 8:54 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email

Demonstrations at the NVIDIA CES booth include:

Home Theater PCs

  • The world’s first High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) PC, the Sony VAIO VGX-XL1 Digital Living System, featuring the NVIDIA GeForce 6200 GPU and PureVideo technology.
  • A large selection of the latest Media Center PCs featuring the GeForce 6600 with passive cooling for silent operation.

Create, Edit and Deliver
  • NVIDIA will be showcasing their partners who use PureVideo technology to accelerate and enhance all stages of the professional and pro-sumer digital video production pipeline.
  • 3D Edit and Red Giant Software showing HD video editing accelerated by NVIDIA PureVideo technology.
HD DVD and Blu-ray Movie Acceleration

  • The graphical enhancements of the soon to be released operating system from Microsoft will be highlighted on a variety of Vista-ready GPUs from NVIDIA.
Featured in NVIDIA GeForce 6 and 7 series GPUs, NVIDIA PureVideo technology allows users to experience home theater quality video on the PC with superb picture clarity and precise, vivid colors across all high-definition (HD) resolutions.
