NVIDIA and Windows Vista Deliver Outstanding New 3D Computing Experience

NVIDIA Offers Consumers the Widest Selection of Windows Vista-Certified Graphics Processors and Motherboards.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today's launch of Microsoft Windows Vista marks the first time that a major operating system requires a graphics processing unit (GPU) for the best experience. In fact, both The New York Times and CNET Networks have reported that Windows Vista requires a graphics processor, while USA Today noted that, "To use Vista's slick graphical interface, users need a sophisticated graphics card."

To meet the needs of enterprise and consumer PC users, NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) has certified the industry's broadest range of GPUs and media and communications processors (MCPs) to be Windows Vista Ready. NVIDIA is the only graphics company with four generations of GPUs and MCPs to be certified by Microsoft to be Windows Vista Premium Ready, and the only graphics company to release Microsoft DirectX 10-capable GPUs. For consumers, this means a stellar out-of-the-box experience with Windows Vista driven by the NVIDIA hardware inside the PC.

"Windows Vista features a beautiful new 3D interface that dramatically improves the computing experience," said Rob Csongor, vice president of corporate marketing at NVIDIA. "Vista's Aero Glass, Flip 3D, Windows Vista Photo Explorer, and Vista's rich media capabilities are actually accelerated with an NVIDIA graphics processor. In addition, a host of popular applications including Microsoft 3D Maps, Picasa, Zinio, PowerDVD HD, and Adobe Acrobat also take advantage of a graphics processor. Every user who plans to build or buy a new PC now should be sure to include a graphics processor in their system."

"Microsoft has worked closely with NVIDIA to ensure that NVIDIA GPUs are excellent Windows Vista-ready solutions," said Anantha Kancherla, principal group program manager at Microsoft. "In addition, NVIDIA's work with DirectX 10 has resulted in outstanding GPUs that will exceed gamers' needs for the next generation."

We have finally completed a follow-up review of the MSI NX8800GTX. In addition to reviewing the graphics card in a single GPU configuration, we also pair it up with a second GeForce 8800 GTX to form a mixed vendor SLI configuration. The review is packed with single GPU and SLI benchmarks at resolutions of 1920x1200 and 2560x1600 with various levels of antialiasing in F.E.A.R., Far Cry, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast, Half-Life 2 Episode One, and Dark Messiah, which is new to our list of benchmarks.

Gameplay performance is tested in Quake 4 as well as a couple of new titles that include Gothic 3 and Neverwinter Nights 2. Throughout the review are plenty of high resolution screenshots for your viewing pleasure, a plethora of interactive image quality comparisons (please enable JavaScript) and video clips that demonstrate our walkthrough's in Dark Messiah, Gothic 3, and Neverwinter Nights 2.

Multi-Core Tech Demo - 1/18/07 @ 4:17 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
Programming to take advantage of multi-core processors is a complex task and will slowly evolve over time. With the assistance of Intel, FutureMark has released the Ice Storm Fighters Game Technology Demo, which is based on a multi-threaded game engine.

Using a technique referred to as "n-number threading", performance will scale based on the number of processor cores available. The number of threads to use can be controlled dynamically as well as the workload, through increased AI and physics processing.

The demo requires an Intel Core 2 quad or dual-core processor. Click the headline for additional information and to download the demo.

3mood Enhancements - 1/16/07 @ 5:23 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Forums
tertsi, the developer of the most excellent Doom 3 tuning tool 3mood, dropped by the forum and provided an update on some of the new features he is working on.

I have found a pretty neat way to improve antialiasing quality in Doom 3 with G80 based graphics cards. This technique is very fast and quality is just outstanding with MSAA or CSAA modes

New features will include:
  • Improved MSAA / CSAA quality by centroid texture sampling
  • Remove MSAA / CSAA artifacts and errors (interpolation and sampling outside the polygon)
  • No performance hit what so ever
  • This works in Doom 3, Quake 4 and Prey
He also put together an image quality comparison between default texture sampling and centroid texture sampling and a comparison of MSAA quality between the R580 and G80.
