Quake 4 Timedemos - 10/28/05 @ 5:55 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
We noticed the problem a few days ago and Joshua Walrath over at Penstar Systems confirmed it with NVIDIA. The Quake 4 timedemo feature is not working correctly as it fails to render certain textures, shaders, and lighting effects.

I have tested this out on both ATI and NVIDIA cards with the latest drivers for each, and the results are the same. Demo playback in Quake 4 appears to be currently broken and does not render the scene correctly.

NVIDIA AND HYBRID PROVIDE EXPANDED 3D INFRASTRUCTURE FOR MOBILE PHONES

NVIDIA Supports Vertically Integrated JSR 184 Accelerated by OpenGL ES; Creating Comprehensive 3D Content Platform for NVIDIA GoForce GPUs

AUSTIN GAME DEVELOPER CONFERENCE, TX—OCTOBER 27, 2005—NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), a worldwide leader in programmable graphics processor technologies, announced today that the Company is working with Hybrid Graphics Ltd. to deliver a one-stop, native-accelerated 3D API stack for mobile phone manufacturers and developers.

Until now, mobile phone OEMs would typically purchase silicon and high-level software from different vendors – increasing integration time and reducing system performance. By integrating Hybrid's high-level M3G (JSR 184) solution over the optimized OpenGL ES drivers for the NVIDIA GoForce family of graphics processing units (GPUs) for wireless handsets, NVIDIA can now immediately provide developers with a seamlessly optimized and supported 3D graphics platform.

FEAR Gameplay Tests - 10/24/05 @ 3:38 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
The folks at bit-tech.net have put together an excellent article that covers the gameplay and graphics in FEAR. They go on to measure high-end and mid-range system gameplay performance and conclude with the best playable settings (similar to what HardOCP has been doing for a while now).

At 1600x1200 (w/2X AA and 8X AF), we saw an 81% increase in average framerate and a 104% increase in minimum framerate for 7800 GTX SLI over a single card. At 1280x960, we witnessed a 71% increase in average framerate, while the minimum frame rate only increased by 31% at the lower resolution - we feel that 46-47 frames per second is a CPU limitation rather than a video card limitation.

C51 Not Pulled Back - 10/21/05 @ 6:16 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
NVIDIA would like to pass along the following information in regards to The Inquirer's story titled Nvidia pulls C51, Geforce 6150 motherboards.

An article has appeared today on the Inquirer claiming that NVIDIA has "pulled all of the C51, GeForce 6100 and GeForce 6150 motherboards as it discovered some serious flaws."

These claims are entirely false. NVIDIA has not ceased shipping or pulled back any NVIDIA nForce products. Our recently announced GeForce 6150, GeForce 6100, and NVIDIA nForce 430/400-based GPU motherboards are in full production and are selling very well for us, as are all of our NVIDIA nForce products, including NVIDIA nForce4 SLI, which continues to set the standard for dual GPU configurations.

In its story, the Inquirer article makes many factually inaccurate statements. The first claims there is a problem with our ActiveArmor Firewall on dual LAN motherboards.

The Inquirer claims that boards with two LAN ports would cause confusion for consumers who would not know whether or not they were protected by the NVIDIA Firewall. As you may know, the NVIDIA Firewall is built directly into the NVIDIA networking driver. It was designed this way to stop possible hacking attempts when booting up your PC.

For those motherboards with a secondary LAN port, the end user would have to install a third party network driver that would normally be supplied by the motherboard manufacturer. How the LAN ports are marked/named/designated on the actual motherboard backplane is up to the motherboard manufacturer.

Because the NVIDIA Firewall is built into our networking driver, it of course only works with the NVIDIA LAN port. An end user would have to install a standalone Firewall application to protect the secondary LAN port, if enabled. This is not new information, and in fact, was disclosed when we launched our first NVIDIA nForce3 product a few years ago.

In addition, there are no dual LAN GeForce 6100/nForce 400 motherboards in development. So, the assertion that this “development” would somehow force us to pull back NVIDIA GeForce 6150/6100-based GPU motherboards is untrue.

The Inquirer article then goes on to say that some users have experienced "data corruption issues with this chipset." The article provides a link to a thread on "forums.nvidia.com", which was only started on October 9, 2005, where a few end users have described a problem doing multiple copies of the same file. However, a posting from today, October 21, 2005, claims the issue is related to a hard disk drive firmware issue and includes a link to the firmware .zip file.

As we do with all end-user comments, we are investigating this thread as we are not aware of any such issue relating to any NVIDIA nForce products relating to data corruption.

How the Inquirer makes a connection of a recent Web thread to a theoretical worldwide pull back of our entire new product portfolio is beyond us.

Again, just to be clear, we have NOT ceased shipping or pulled back any NVIDIA nForce products. Our recently announced GeForce 6150, GeForce 6100, and nForce 430/400-based GPU motherboards are in full production and are selling very well for us, as are all of our nForce products, including nForce4 SLI, which continues to set the standard for dual GPU configurations.

If you have already bought one of these products, we thank-you for your patronage and continued support of NVIDIA and our partners in the retail channel. We hope you enjoy using these products as much as we have enjoyed designing it and bringing it to market.

For those of you interested in purchasing GeForce 6100/6150-based GPU motherboard solutions today, please check out such leading e-tail sites such as www.newegg.com where there are a wide variety of products currently available, including:

BIOSTAR TForce6100 Socket 754 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

A8N32 SLI Deluxe - 10/20/05 @ 10:29 am - By: MUYA - Source: Browsing
Hot Hardware has today unleashed the first of any review of a retail nForce4 X16 chipset motherboard, the motherboard in question is an ASUS A8N32 which resembles the A8N-SLI Premium. The only difference between the two being the nForce4 X16 chipset, NVIDIA's latest premium AMD platform chipset which can provide dedicated 16 lanes of PCI Express connectivity to each card if both cards are utilized in SLI mode unlike the nForce 4 SLI, which could provide only 8 lanes to each grapihics card. In benches, the new chipset seems to provide no real benefits that is, until you start cranking the AA to insane levels like SLI AA at 16X! Take a read to find out what the extra bandwidth can do for you.

In the immortal words of someone famous (we're not sure who), "stop the press"! Those FarCry scores above are actually very impressive indeed. Doing the math quickly for you, what you're looking at is a 67% performance increase in 8X SLI-AA mode and a 58% increase in 16X SLI-AA mode.

NVIDIA COD2 Bundle - 10/18/05 @ 5:37 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
NVIDIA GeForce graphic processing units (GPUs) have been selected by Activision as the preferred platform for Call of Duty 2, the highly anticipated sequel to Call of Duty which won over 80 "Game of the Year" awards.

To enable gamers to experience Call of Duty 2 as it was truly intended, NVIDIA has reached an agreement with Activision that allows partners of NVIDIA to bundle the Call of Duty 2 game with graphics cards based on the award-winning series of GeForce GPUs.

A pre-sale program for GeForce-based graphics cards bundled with Call of Duty 2 starts immediately. US partners that will participate include:

Under the agreement, NVIDIA is granted exclusive bundling rights to Call of Duty 2, making partners of NVIDIA the only source to get Call of Duty 2 outside of a stand-alone purchase of the game in retail. NVIDIA bundles will occur simultaneously with the retail launch of Call of Duty 2. NVIDIA and Activision will also participate in joint advertising and various promotional activities through the holiday selling season to make consumers aware that NVIDIA is the preferred GPU from Call of Duty 2.

Video Quality Analysis - 10/18/05 @ 5:24 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
The FiringSquad has published an in-depth article on testing video processor quality using the HQV Benchmark DVD. They note significant errors that were made by Principled Technologies, who NVIDIA commissioned as an independent 3rd party to compare PureVideo against competing solutions from ATI, Intel and other DVD players.

In that regard, it's somewhat ironic to read through Principled Technologies' commissioned study. They've made several errors in evaluating the video playback performance of PC GPUs resulting in 10 points of artificial inflated scores for NVIDIA and an artificial 5 point penalty for the i945G.

In my testing, NVIDIA PureVideo solutions playing a DVD via a native 480p window using a 1280x1024 DVI connection resulted in only 51 out of 130 points. This is identical to the results obtained at Anandtech.com but clearly different from the 86 points that Hot Hardware gave or the 68 point that NVIDIA’s commissioned article gave.

The irony is that even though NVIDIA's scores were inflated by Principled Technologies, their "key findings" are ones I still agree with completely. Namely, that NVIDIA PureVideo is superior to ATI's Catalyst 5.8, that PureVideo is superior to basic DVD players, and that PureVideo minimizes some of the common artifacts seen with de-interlacing.

Food For Thought - 10/11/05 @ 5:06 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Last year we had fun discussing the head-to-head benchmark results of NVIDIA's GeForce 6800 Ultra vs. ATI's Radeon X800 XT and the GeForce 6800 GT vs. Radeon X800 Pro. At that time, the high-end GPUs from NVIDIA and ATI were pretty evenly matched performance-wise.

Let's fast forward some 15 months and summarize a few results of NVIDIA's GeForce 7800 GT vs. ATI's recently announced Radeon 1800 XL.

You can pick up a GeForce 7800 GT at ZipZoomfly for $329.99 while the Radeon X1800 XL will cost you around $444 at Newegg.

If you have $444 to spend, maybe you should consider the GeForce 7800 GTX.

You can pick up a GeForce 7800 GTX at ZipZoomfly for $449.

Food for thought...

ATI's Crossfire - 10/04/05 @ 3:43 pm - By: MikeC - Source:
Josh at Penstarsys has written an editorial on ATI's PR.

“ATI PR really should take a good look at how they have addressed the market, as they have successfully alienated a good portion of their fan base. These are the people who will go out and say lots of good things about ATI's products, as well as recommend these products to their friends and family. Word of mouth when it comes to technology can be more persuasive than a well written article or review."

I believe that Enemy Territory Quake Wars will be the second.

Where's Crossfire? - 10/03/05 @ 1:51 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
That is what the President and CTO of VoodooPC writes about in his latest blog entry.

“When AMD, Intel, ATi, or NVIDIA launch something big, they always try to get companies like VoodooPC to test it ahead of time, give feedback, and perhaps use it in our review systems. I’ve been pretty quiet about the ATi Crossfire launch. Even though we’re listed as a launch "partner" we still don’t know much about it other than what we read online.

I hear it’s pretty good other than the 60Hz 1600x1200 resolution limit, dual x8, the mess of dongles in the back, and the lack of availability. I emailed ATi multiple times in the last month or so, and I’ve received no official reply about when we’ll get it. I already instructed the salespeople at Voodoo to just tell customers the truth about SLI vs Crossfire, there really is no comparison when you’re comparing something that’s real vs something that’s not available.
