| I've been measuring the effectiveness of the MSI NX8800GT's fan in cooling the GPU and memory under a load bearing scenario. By default, the fan speed is set to operate at 29%, which is approximately 1,600RPM. With the graphics card installed in a closed case, the temperature of the GPU at idle was 56C. With the Real-Time High Dynamic Range Image Based Lighting (rthdribl) demo running in an 800x600 window, the GPU reached a peak temperature of 95C with the room temperature at 22.7C / 73F. As a side note, I also conducted the same series of tests with the room temperature at 78F where the GPU temperature topped out at 100C. Using NVIDIA's nTune, I started to increase the fan speed in increments of 10% and recorded the GPU, memory, and ambient temperatures as reported by Everest Ultimate Edition. The results are shown in the following graph. Increasing the fan speed from 29% to 40% provided a noticeable decrease in temperature, which was also the case when the fan speed increased from 40% to 50%. At 50%, the fan is operating at 2,600RPM. At 99%, or 4,300RPM, the fan was unbearably loud.A second test was then conducted to determine the point at which I could begin to hear the fan with all the case fans powered down and with all the case fans running at 75%. The results of this test are shown by the shaded area in the graph, which is labeled as the "Optimal Fan Noise to Cooling Zone." At 45%, the fan noise is hardly noticeable and only begins to become noticeable at 50%. Although this information was collected using my PC, the results would indicate that with a properly ventilated case, an aftermarket cooler is not a requirement in order to adequately cool the GeForce 8800 GT. NVIDIA's engineers devised a cooling solution whereby all of the boards components are behind a metal faceplate.

| Crysis Demo News - 10/26/07 @ 10:55 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email |
| NVIDIA sends word that they will be hosting the highly anticipated Crysis demo tomorrow at nZone. Note that the exact time is still being determined. The demo will contain the complete first level of the game, which represents approximately 45 minutes of gameplay. Crysis was developed using NVIDIA's GeForce 8 Series graphics processors. NVIDIA programmers spent more than 5,000 engineering hours helping Crytek add the latest graphics technology to the game. The final version of the game is scheduled for release in North America and Europe on November 16th, 2007. NVIDIA and Electronic Arts will be hosting a huge LAN party featuring Crysis and The Orange Box from November 16th – 18th in the San Francisco Bay Area. Additional details will be coming soon. Be sure to grab the latest ForceWare beta drivers if you plan on playing the demo and check out our feedback thread for comments from those who pre-ordered the game and have been given early access to the demo. Check out Crytek's Cevat Yerli on the technology behind Crysis over at Shacknews. Crysis Demo now available at NZone. |
| Windows Activation - 10/25/07 @ 6:21 am - By: MikeC - Source: The Inquirer |
| After having installed Windows Vista Ultimate back in April, I've had to phone Microsoft three different times in order to activate the operating system. In addition to swapping out a graphics card, I also updated graphics drivers and applied system updates on two occasions. In each case I received a message, following a subsequent re-boot, that the operating system could not be activated on-line and that I would need to perform a manual activation in order to receive full functionality. I understand that this can also occur with Windows XP, although I have yet to receive such a message after 15 months of swapping out numerous graphics cards and installing numerous drivers. The folks at APC Magazine experienced a similar issue with Windows Vista and confirmed that swapping video cards or updating a device driver can trigger a total Vista deactivation. You can read that article here. I became curious as to how the transition to Windows Vista was faring among the visitors to nV News. Using information from the server log files, I put together the following graph, which shows the percentage of page hits by month for those visitors using Windows XP vs. Windows Vista.

| A Note to AMD/ATI - 10/05/07 @ 3:59 am - By: MikeC - Source: Forum |
| Ever since we participated in the Mutli-GPU World Tour 2006, I have been bothered by statements regarding CrossFire that continue to be published at AMD/ATI's web site. Based on this "deceptive" wording, potential consumers may be under the impression that CrossFire will always provide an increase in 3D application performance. As a former consumer of CrossFire products, I recommend that a footnote be added to those and similar statements that goes something like this: Blame PC Perspective for jogging my memory ![]() |
