ForceWare 93.81 Beta - 11/28/06 @ 8:45 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Forum
NVIDIA has released ForceWare beta driver version 93.81 for Windows XP/2000 and x64 editions of Windows Server 2003/Windows XP Professional. Driver release notes have not been posted yet and the release highlights are the same as the highlights for the official 93.71 drivers. Note that these drivers do not support the GeForce 8800 Series.

With the release of the GeForce 8800 Series, NVIDIA may have been forced to abandon their GeForce/TNT2 ForceWare Unified Driver Architecture (UDA). While there are benefits to a UDA, program code generally increases in complexity, which tends to cause an increase in the number of defects. Testing a UDA is also very expensive as the 93.81 beta driver supports 137 GPUs under Windows XP.

Feedback here.

Auzentech X-Meridian 7.1 - 11/20/06 @ 10:55 pm - By: MikeC - Source:
Brian Cochran has posted a review of the Auzentech X-Meridian 7.1 sound card.

Auzentech X-Meridian 7.1 sound card. review

Here's a bit from the conclusion.

"The sound that came out of my headphones with Dolby Headphone enabled was awe inspiring. I have never heard anything like it. From ratty old mp3s to high definition audio, this card delivers amazing quality of sound. My wife even agrees. I made her listen to some mp3s normally, then with Dolby Headphone turned on. Then, I turned on the Virtual 7.1 speakers, and she became giddy...a very rare occurence. For those of us who cannot crank up the audio without disturbing our significant others, the Dolby Headphone feature is the perfect solution."

ASUS P5N32 Review - 11/19/06 @ 7:49 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Kyle Kerley has posted a review of the ASUS P5N32-SLI Premium/WiFi-AP Edition motherboard, which is based on NVIDIA's nForce 590 chipset.

ASUS P5N32-SLI Premium/WiFi-AP Edition review

The P5N32-SLI Premium supports Intel Core 2 Duo processors. Here's a bit from the conclusion.

I absolutely love this motherboard. From the packaging all the way down to the Q-Connector Kit, ASUS took the utmost care of its customers. This board is packed to the brim with features, both onboard and in the box, and all that attention really pays off. ASUS has a solid, stable, blazing-fast and feature-rich motherboard on their hands and any enthusiast should be happy to have this as the heart of their machine.

The only real negative to this board is that as it came to the game so late, it has been completely overshadowed by the new nForce 680i. The latest and greatest from NVIDIA features the C55 northbridge chip (whereas this board has the older C19) – which should allow for much more reliable and higher overclocking – along with many other features for a price not that far above the P5N32-SLI Premium/WiFi-AP. With that being the case, and this being a board with the enthusiast in mind, I simply cannot recommend people buy this board over the 680i, nor would I expect anyone looking for the latest and greatest to buy this board.

FLY with EVGA'S New NVIDIA 680i SLI Motherboard Contest

Want to Fly Like Superman?

EVGA has brought you products that make your computer fly for years, but now it's time to make their customers fly as well. EVGA has partnered with Zero G to bring our customers an amazing weightless experience.

Imagine free falling 10,000 feet, without a parachute! Zero G makes it possible by flying a plane to approximately 34,000 feet and then going into a nose dive for 10,000 feet before pulling up. This rollercoaster effect will generate 25-30 seconds of weightlessness on each drop. This is the same type of training that NASA uses for astronauts.

Three grand prize winners will be chosen and the top 100 scores will get a free copy of Dark Messiah Might and Magic!

Launch Statement - 11/08/06 @ 1:39 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
NVIDIA has asked us to post the following statement concerning today's launch of the GeForce 8800 GPUs:

Today NVIDIA announced the hard launch and immediate availability of our new flagship GeForce 8800 GPUs. Some recent reports on the web mention a BOM error (wrong resistor value) on initial GeForce 8800 GTX boards. All boards with this problem were purged from the production pipeline. Product on shelves is fully qualified and certified by NVIDIA and its board partners. We and our board partners stand behind these products and back them with our full warranty.

8800GTX Recall - 11/06/06 @ 10:30 am - By: MikeC - Source:
Bit-tech is reporting that NVIDIA has a bad batch of 8800GTX that they have recalled. The problem is minor and is not expected to delay the launch this Wednesday.

"Some GeForce 8800 GTX boards that were built through our contract manufacturer had a simple BOM error - wrong resistor value. GeForce 8800 GTS boards are not effected by this.

These GeForce 8800 GTX boards were shipped to our Add-In-Card partners.

We have been working with them to pull these back and change the resistor to the correct value.

We believe we will still be able to hit our hard launch this week (Nov 8th) with the new GeForce 8800 GTX boards.

This is a testament to our execution as well as the execution of our Add-In-Card partners.

Adam Foat, Product PR Manger, Northern Europe."

Intel's Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Reviews

X1950XTX Review - 11/01/06 @ 7:36 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
PC Perspective has posted a review of the ATI Radeaon X1950XTX. Performance is tested using Prey, Battlefield 2, Call Of Duty 2, FEAR and Half-Life 2 Lost Coast in single and CrossFire mode. There was however, a pecularity when testing Prey, which appears to have inflated the results.

"You can see in these screen shots from our run through of Prey that the X1950 XTX standard is using a lesser-quality AA even though it is set at identical 4xAA in the options.

So while these timedemo runs don't represent real game play, they are incriminating none the less. Quake 4 shows a 41% performance hit when in the "real" 4xAA mode on the CrossFire card that the standard card doesn't get hit with. In Doom 3, the same is happening at a 41% performance delta as well.

Whether or not this was an accidental bug or something else, there are probably numerous reviews online about the X1950 XTX cards that need to be re-evaluated, my own included. Any readers or reviewers that were overly impressed by the X1950 XTX's performance in OpenGL applications (possibly just limited to the Doom 3 engine) need to run these kinds of tests themselves to see if their results are tainted by this error. Hopefully ATI will address this issue quickly and in the right manor!"
