WD MyBook Review - 12/21/07 @ 11:55 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
I picked up an external hard drive a couple of weeks ago while I was at Costco. Here is a review of Western Digital's My Book 500GB External HDD.

As the amount of data residing on our home network continues to increase, I began to take a serious look at our backup strategy. Although our network consists of four Windows-based personal computers, regular backups are only taken of my PC, which doubles as the primary test system during graphics card reviews.

NVIDIA Named Best - 12/21/07 @ 11:11 am - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
Congratulations to NVIDIA and their employees for having been named the Company of The Year for 2007 by Forbes Magazine. NVIDIA was selected among a list of 400 of the best companies in the United States.

This is our 10th year of selecting the 400 Best Big Companies in America. Our methodology for choosing the winners is so stringent that 165 companies from last year's 400 did not make the cut for 2008. Not only must companies pass our benchmarks for financial growth rates and returns, they must also meet our approval for their corporate governance, accounting standards and background checks.

It Depends... - 12/16/07 @ 4:02 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
I've updated our price list chart of graphics cards that are powered by NVIDIA's G80 GPU. Amazingly, graphics cards based on the high-powered GeForce 8800 Ultra have increased in value, while all others have been on the decline.

Since the launch of the G92 last month, prices of the GeForce 8800 GTX (red) and 320MB GeForce 8800 GTS (blue) have dropped a bit.

After work Friday I popped in a GeForce 8800 Ultra from XFX to determine if it was worthy of the extra cost over the GeForce 8800 GTX.

The Witcher Demo - 12/14/07 @ 1:04 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
A playable demo of the role-playing game The Witcher has been released. Developed by CD Projekt, The Witcher has been receiving positive feedback from many of our forum members and will likely be a candidate for game of the year. Click the story headline for download links.

Giving players a tantalizing taste of the world of The Witcher, the demo begins with the first part of the prologue in which the seeds of the story are sown and the white haired witcher Geralt learns the rudiments of combat. The prologue is followed by the entirety of Act 1, during which Geralt of Rivia will see the first threads of the story weave their web around him and be called upon to slay man and beast to stay alive and earn his keep.

More Woes For AMD - 12/12/07 @ 1:48 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
Following an annual strategic planning review, AMD has filed an impairment charge with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) resulting from their $5.6 billion acquisition of ATI back in 2006. An impairment charge is an accounting practice used to write-off worthless goodwill.

AMD has also been under pressure following a disclosure that a bug in its new quad-core CPU has delayed the availability of the Barcelona chip. AMD's management is scheduled to meet with Wall Street analysts in New York tomorrow to present its annual financial strategy and goals.

A related article concerning the perils that AMD faces can be read at this link.

Overclocking Results - 12/11/07 @ 7:57 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Preliminary overclocking results for the XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB review sample are turning out to be pretty impressive. Results from Doom 3 at 2560x1600 w/no AA:

Default Core: 678MHz / Mem: 986MHz - 123fps

Overclocked: 800MHz / Mem: 1125MHz - 140fps

Note that Hardware Canucks reviewed the same model from XFX and was able to reach a core of 820MHz and memory of 1117MHz.

XFX 8800 GTS 512MB - 12/11/07 @ 3:52 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
We have published our review of the XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB Alpha Dog Edition graphics card. The GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB is NVIDIA's follow-up to the hugely popular GeForce 8800 GT.

The XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB is a solid implementation of NVIDIA's reference design and competes with the much higher priced GeForce 8800 GTX. However, the GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB faces stiff competition from the GeForce 8800 GT, which can pose a difficult decision in choosing one model over the other.

Happy G92 Monday! - 12/10/07 @ 2:50 am - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Mid-range gamers' can rejoice today as 256MB graphics cards using NVIDIA's GeForce 8800 GT GPU have started to appear on our GeForce 8800 GT PriceGrabber feed.

The following products from XFX are currently listed as being in-stock.

Before sending along XFX's 256MB Alpha Dog Edition for Brian Cochran to review, I gave it a workout this past weekend.

XFX GeForce 8800 GT 256MB

Amazing performance for the price at the resolution of 1680x1050 (with a capable processor).

Some results can be compared to the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB model and the GeForce 8800 GTX here.

EVGA 8800 GT KO - 12/07/07 @ 5:28 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Brian Cochran has completed a review of EVGA's GeForce 8800 GT KO 512MB. Brian checks out the performance of the 65nm fabricated GPU under Windows XP and at the resolution of 1680x1050.

EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GT KO

How does it stack up? Well, I put it through a series of benchmark and in-game tests under Windows XP to determine how well it performs. To utilize the generous amount of memory, results for 4x and 8x antialiasing were also provided.

Check it out here.

Next up for Brian is the cheaper and equally effective 256MB model.

I took the 256MB model for a spin yesterday and will have performance results against the GeForce 7900 GS, which debuted in September, 2006 at a price point of $199 to $249.

Those of you that have a mid-range or high-end GeForce 7 Series GPU and skipped the upgrade to the GeForce 8600 GTS will be interested in the results, which will be made as news posts over the busy weekend.

Stay tuned!
