As some of you may know, I am performing a system upgrade along with a migration from Windows XP to Windows Vista.

Wow, SLI on a motherboard with a non-NVIDIA chipset. Feels kinda' weird

Single GPU ran great. Getting ready to test SLI.

Updgrade Time! - 12/21/08 @ 4:47 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Wahoo, we're taking the plunge and finally switching to Windows Vista exclusively. To celebrate the occasion, we also took the opportunity to perform a few hardware upgrades. In this upgrade we are moving our main test system from NVIDIA's nForce 680i to Intel's X58 chipset.

Please click to enlarge.

Here we have Gigabyte's GA-EX58-UD5 motherboard, an Intel i7 940 2.94GHz Quad-Core processor w/support for Hyper-Threading Technology and a Triple Channel Kit of 2GBx3 (6GB) Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600MHz SDRAM (PC3-12800).

Note that the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 has been "NVIDIA SLI-Ready certified" by NVIDIA.

Please click to enlarge.

So far the main components have been assembled and the system is setting in our testing rack. Now to add a power supply, CD, graphics card, and hard drive and we'll be ready to install the operating system. Went all out on a hard drive with a Western Digitial 300GB VelociRaptor. Christmas comes early around here!

Further progress reports will be forthcoming.

Feedback and discussion here.

XFX GeForce 260 - 12/08/08 @ 3:15 pm - By: MikeC - Source: XFX
It was back in January when Jonathan Martini reviewed his XFX GeForce 8800 GT XXX 512MB Alpha Dog Edition. Eleven months later, he's returned to put the XFX GeForce 260 on the workbench and ready to share his experiences with the upgrade.

The XFX GeForce 260 GTX is outperforming and outclassing the XFX 8800 GT 512MB XXX that a few months ago was the reigning champion of the $200-$300 price range. It'll be hard to find a card with a better value to performance ratio than the XFX GeForce 260 GTX for the holiday season.

2K/EA License PhysX - 12/08/08 @ 9:13 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
Two prominent game developers, 2K Games and Electronic Arts, have signed on to license NVIDIA's PhysX Technology.

2K Games Licenses NVIDIA PhysX Technology for Its Studios Worldwide

"We are very impressed with the quality of the PhysX engine and we licensed it so our studios can use this solution early in development," said Jacob Hawley, technology director for 2K. "Developing games with an interactive story and immersive gameplay remains our number one priority, and aligning with technology leaders like NVIDIA allows our teams to concentrate on making great games."

EA Signed on to License NVIDIA PhysX Technology

"PhysX is a great physics solution for the most popular platforms, and we're happy to make it available for EA's development teams worldwide," said Tim Wilson, Chief Technology Officer of EA's Redwood Shores Studio. "Gameplay remains our number one goal, with character, vehicle and environmental interactivity a critical part of the gameplay experience for our titles, and we look forward to partnering with NVIDIA to reach this goal."

Note: The following link features a 6MB video clip (wmv - 640x360), that shows a side-by-side comparison of gameplay without PhysX and gameplay with PhysX.

Cheap SLI Cooling - 12/07/08 @ 5:02 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
I recently switched back to SLI and although I wasn't satistisfied with the high GPU temperatures, like some of you I keep the side of my case open since I swap out graphics cards frequently.

With an SLI configuration using the GeForce GTX 280, I was able to knock of 13 °C (from 98 °C to 85 °C) in the Furmark benchmark at load using a quiet running 120mm fan! This was accomplished by affixing the 120mm fan to blow hot air away from the GPUs like so:

Please click to enlarge.

A 120mm fan is perfect for this type of application as it does a great job of pushing the heat generated from the graphics cards out of the case while running extremely quiet.

At idle, the GPU temps are running at 50 °C / 49 °C with the default GPU fan speed of 40%. At 50% fan speed, temps drop to 48 °C / 47 °C and at 60%, temps were 45 °C / 43 °C. Room temperature during testing was 70 °F / 21.1 °C.
