7800 GTX 512MB - 2/25/06 @ 6:43 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
I received the following email from EastLuna.com in regards to the availability of BFG's GeForce 7800 GTX OC 512MB graphics card. The GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB certainly turned out to be an elusive product. Although it provided top-notch performance at a sometimes ridiculously high price, some enthusiasts were left frustrated due to the lack of availability.

You requested a Stock Availability Notification at our web site on Saturday, December 31st concerning the BFG Technologies GeForce 7800 GTX OC 512MB GDDR3 PCIe Graphics Card and we just wanted to notify you that this product has unfortunately been retired, and is no longer available for sale.

We just wanted to let you know so you wouldn't be left in the dark about this change. Usually when a product is retired, that particular item has either been discontinued by the manufacturer, met our one year product shelf-life time limit, or we could no longer find a source for the product.

D. Kirk Honored - 2/24/06 @ 4:40 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
Congratulations to NVIDIA's Chief Scientist David Kirk who was elected to the National Academy Of Engineering for his role in bringing high-performance graphics to personal computers.

NVIDIA's Chief Scientist - David B. Kirk

Since 1997, Dr. Kirk is responsible for defining the vision for the Company's next generation hardware architecture, including the market-leading NVIDIA GeForce family of graphics processing units (GPUs) for desktop PCs and leading game consoles such as the highly anticipated Playstation3, as well as the GoForce handheld GPU for cell phones and other handheld devices. These technologies include hardware texture mapping, programmable shading, data parallel processing, and more.

Dr. Kirk is also credited with the observation that data parallel GPU performance accelerates faster than scalar CPU performance, exceeding Moore's Law.

Dr. Kirk is the inventor of 50 patents, patent applications and articles relating to graphics design and has published more than 50 articles on graphics technology. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the California Institute of Technology. In 2002, Dr. Kirk received the SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award.

Acquisition Article - 2/17/06 @ 7:37 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
In a follow-up story concerning NVIDIA's acquisition plans, which were discussed at yesterdays earnings conference call, Alan Dang of the FiringSquad speculates on the company NVIDIA may be targeting. The story examines NVIDIA's strengths and weaknesses along with three potential areas for growth.

The ideal company for NVIDIA to acquire isn’t a company that will add new products or services or "fill in the gaps" of the existing line-up. Instead, the ideal target for NVIDIA would be a company that augments something that NVIDIA is already actively involved with, but is an area of increasing growth requiring additional resources.

FutureMark Interview - 2/13/06 @ 3:42 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
PC INpact has posted an interview with FutureMark's Tero Sarkkinen and Nicklas Renqvist. Areas of discussion include vendor relationships, technology, dual-core processors, future plans, and of course 3DMark06.

PCi : Why and which features in particular on this new version you think make the product a must in today's available benchmarking tools ?

TS : Without a doubt it is the HDR and the threaded CPU tests. HDR enables effects in real-time 3D graphics that were impossible before it and the difference is mind blowing. We have posted comparison screenshots of 3DMark05 vs 3DMark06 and the difference is just like night and day!

As the leading provider of workstation graphics and AMD processor-based core-logic technology, NVIDIA solutions were the choice when Fujitsu Siemens Computers engineered this powerful 64-bit AMD Opteron workstation platform.

"The Fujitsu Siemens Computers Celsius v830 workstation has been designed to deliver the very best performance for the workstation industry's most demanding applications," said Andreas Thimmel, Vice President Business Clients, Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "As NVIDIA is a leading provider of HyperTransport-based chipsets for the server and workstation market they understand our need for reliability, stability, and service/support, and provide products that fit those needs perfectly."

NVIDIA GOFORCE 5500 BRINGS THE WORLD OF DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT TO MOBILE PHONES

NVIDIA GoForce 5500 Delivers High-Quality TV, Video, Audio, and 3D Gaming to Mobile Phones

3GSM 2006—BARCELONA, SPAIN—FEBRUARY 13, 2006— NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), the worldwide leader in programmable graphics processor technologies, today unveiled the NVIDIA GoForce 5500 handheld graphics processing unit (GPU)—the industry’s first handheld GPU to enable true, fluid digital TV, high-fidelity surround sound, rapid multi-shot photography, and console-class 3D graphics. For many years, these capabilities have been the domain of function-specific devices such as the home entertainment system, the digital still camera, or the Sony Playstation. Today, this new GPU brings all these features, and more, to the mobile phone.

"High-quality multimedia services are a key revenue growth driver for the world’s carriers and content providers and we believe we’ll see significant uptake of these services in 2006,” said Mario Morales, semiconductor analyst for IDC. “Companies like NVIDIA, whose products deliver compelling and tangible improvements to the overall end user experience of these new services, are well placed to take advantage of this surge in demand."

"The introduction of the NVIDIA GoForce 5500 handheld GPU marks the beginning of a new era for 3G mobile phones,” said Michael Rayfield, general manager of the handheld GPU group at NVIDIA. “The NVIDIA GoForce 5500 GPU delivers high-quality video playback and capture, high-resolution camera support, and stunning 3D graphics—all at impressive performance levels that we believe consumers are going to demand in the next generation of mobile devices."

Phones based on the NVIDIA GoForce 5500 handheld GPU are expected to be available from key handset manufacturers before the 2006 holiday season.
