Core 2 Successor - 3/29/07 @ 11:38 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
Ars Technica has published a brief write-up on the successor to the Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Codenamed Penryn, the new processor will be manufactured using Intel's new high-k dielectric 45nm process.

Penryn will feature higher clock speeds, frontside bus speeds up to 1600MHz, contain more L2 cache (6MB for dual core and 12MB for quad-core processors) and support SSE4 extensions.

Intel claims that SSE4, in combination with other new features that I'll describe shortly, will offer Penryn a performance improvement of as much as 40 percent over Core 2 Duo on some software like video codecs, and as much as 20 percent on games.

Quadro FX4600 - 3/21/07 @ 6:31 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
3D Professor checks out NVIDIA's Quadro FX4600, which brings a unified architecture to their professional workstation level GPUs. Additional features include GPU Computing Technology for visualization with NVIDIA CUDA and Shader Model 4.0 graphics. Performance is measured on AMD and Intel-based systems.

On this note we were not to be disappointed, the results across the board proved to be extremely good in almost all areas which are remarkable for a pre release driver. The driver is immature and needless to say the wizards of the NVIDIA workstation driver team are ferreting away to improve on these couple of shortfalls.

Motherboard GPUs - 3/14/07 @ 5:48 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
NVIDIA has announced a new class of motherboard GPUs at CeBIT, which will be based on GeForce 7-class graphics processors.

GeForce 7050 motherboard GPUs for AMD platforms will be available next month while products supporting the Intel Core2 and Quad Core platforms will be available this summer.

NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) defines new class of GPUs called Motherboard GPUs (mGPUs).

  • In 2006, NVIDIA became the only independent supplier of GPUs. With the launch of this new category, mGPUs, NVIDIA is transforming mainstream PC graphics performance. Requirements for the mGPU include:

    • DX9.0 (ShaderModel 2.0) and above API support
    • At least one digital connector (DVI/HDMI 1.2) with HDCP
    • Multi-display support
    • Dedicated video processing engine, (minimum HQV score of 80)
    • Windows Experience Index 3.0 and above

  • At CeBIT, NVIDIA is demoing new GeForce 7050 Motherboard GPUs for AMD platforms. Available next month, the new GeForce 7050 mGPU offers:

    • Award-winning NVIDIA GeForce 7-class graphics
    • On-board HDMI interface for simplified digital connection
    • NVIDIA PureVideo engine, delivering stellar visual quality and performance for high definition and standard definition content.
    • NVIDIA nForce 630a core logic subsystem delivering uncompromised features and performance

  • NVIDIA will also showcase the world’s first mGPU for Intel platforms. Available this summer, the GeForce 7050/nForce 630i solution will deliver:

    • Rich graphics and leading performance for Intel Core2 and Quad Core platforms
    • World’s first integrated HDMI support enables playback of protected digital content from the PC direct to high definition televisions
    • NVIDIA nForce core-logic provides advanced storage and networking features for today’s connected digital lifestyles

In the last two years the use of 3D applications such as Microsoft Vista, Adobe, iTunes and Internet applications such as Google Maps and Second Life, have become prevalent among enterprise and consumer PCs.

Today, mainstream PCs require quality graphics that provide performance and stability that has never been seen. The impact of 3D applications on the market is pushing the GPU to the forefront of both consumer and enterprise purchasing decisions.

As the only independent GPU provider in the world, NVIDIA is well positioned to capitalize on this emerging trend and provide top-to-bottom product solutions for every market and price point.

NVIDIA is the second largest core-logic supplier in the world. It is the largest supplier overall of core-logic solutions for AMD desktop, notebook, workstation, and server platforms. 8 out of 10 PCs sold at retail ship with NVIDIA nForce technology inside.

nHancer 2.2 Released - 3/12/07 @ 8:43 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
Martin Korndörfer sends word that nHancer version 2.2 has been released. nHancer is an advanced control panel and profile editor for NVIDIA based graphics cards.

As a result of Windows Vista User Access Control feature (UAC), nHancer is now using a Windows service to make all changes which require administrator privileges. The nHancer UI itself runs completely in a restricted user context.

The service itself runs with administrator privileges and does not add any security leak to systems by making sure that its functions are extremely limited and tailored to the needs of nHancer. The service is also completely passive, so even though it's running, it doesn't do anything as long as the nHancer UI isn't used.

Besides this major change the new version contains a couple of bugfixes and some small improvements.

  • Compatibility with Forceware 100+ for XP added
  • Reintroduced the Supersampling modes (8xS, 16xS, 2x2 etc.) for 8x00 cards
  • Added all new Anti-Aliasing modes for 8x00 cards (32xS, SLI 64xS)
  • Small bugfixes and improvements
Feedback here.

  • ShaderPerf 2: detailed shader performance information with support for new drivers
  • FX Composer 2: a world-class development environment for cross-platform shader authoring; DirectX and OpenGL support with HLSL, Cg, and COLLADA FX
  • Shader Library: the world's largest collection of GPU shaders featuring more than 100 different shader effects and support for external submissions
Screenshots of upcoming DirectX 10 titles can be viewed in this forum thread.

Cevat Yerli, president of Crytek, said, "We use the NVIDIA developer tools frequently for performance analysis, optimization, shaders, and testing. The NVIDIA developer tools have saved us a significant amount of time and money in the course of our work on Crysis. The exceptional debugging, visualization and profiling capabilities in these tools make them a 'must' for any development group. It actually amazes me that NVIDIA provides them for free."
