nTune Updated - 4/28/07 @ 8:25 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
NVIDIA has released a new version of nTune, their GPU and platform overclocking and tweaking utility. Version 5.05.38 supports Windows XP (32/64-bit) and Windows Vista (32/64-bit). This version of nTune fixes some key problems with NVIDIA ForceWare drivers Windows Vista v158.18 and Windows XP v158.19.

Windows XP

  • Fixed issue in which radio control buttons on the GPU clock control page were not working with non-English language packs installed.
  • Fixed problem with GPU overclocking while using the auto tuning feature, the service may fail to return on a restart and tuning will not complete. Note: Some GPU cards may not support auto tuning under Windows Vista until a future driver release. These cards may still be manually overclocked.
Windows Vista
  • Fixed problem when using previous versions of nTune with the latest v158.18 driver, the Graphics Control Panels settings would disappear.
  • Fixed problem with nTune not working with Windows Vista User Account Control (UAC) settings.
  • Fixed problem with GPU overclocking while using the auto tuning feature, the service may fail to return on a restart and tuning will not complete. Note: Some GPU cards may not support auto tuning under Windows Vista until a future driver release. These cards may still be manually overclocked.
  • Fixed issue in which the GPU clock reported was not correct after a resolution change.

nForce 650i Review - 4/26/07 @ 6:13 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Steve Angelly has completed his review of the EVGA nForce 650i Ultra motherboard. With a starting price point of $99, this motherboard may be the ticket for a budget-minded single GPU system with the cheaper Intel processors.

I could not resist providing some sort of cooling after taking several temperature readings of the naked SB NF-430 chip just setting uncovered on the board hot to the touch.

In my collection I found a heatsink that I acquired from somewhere unknown complete with spring-loaded push-pins of correct dimensions to line up with the pre-drilled holes in the motherboard. I dabbed a spot of AS5 to the core of the chip and set the heatsink on top and snapped the push-pins in place.

MSI P6N SLI Review - 4/23/07 @ 9:37 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Steve Angelly has completed a review of the MSI P6N SLI Platinum motherboard. Based on the NVIDIA nForce 650i chipset, the P6N SLI Platinum is an attractive alternative to motherboards based other more expensive nForce 680i chipset.

With all of that said, the P6N SLI Platinum is a gamer's delight. Exceedingly fast at default clocks and even more so overclocked and running super stable. With my concerns over the voltage reporting and approaching warm weather I will be lowering the clocks for gaming, at least until I can get a better handle on actual voltage being supplied. Of course, the 1333MHz FSB, 3.0GHz, settings that I initially found to be stable is a good cushion to fall back on.

Vista Installed! - 4/08/07 @ 10:10 pm - By: MikeC - Source:
Once I figured how to open the case, I could finally get around to checking out Microsoft's Vista operating system. Here is my story, all condensed in 5 pages...

I began working on this article when I first acquainted myself with Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system. About a month ago, I spent a weekend installing, uninstalling, and fiddling around with the 32-bit and 64-versions of Vista. Vista itself seemed pretty solid, but 3D gaming was a hit or miss adventure with NVIDIA's 100.25 beta graphics driver.

TweakGuides has completed their STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl Tweak Guide, which features descriptions, tips, tweaks and mods of the first person shooter from GSC.

However in the 5 years it's taken to bring the game to market, there still appear to be some elements of the X-Ray Engine which are yet to be fixed, and several patches will be needed to make the game relatively bug-free. At the moment there are no serious issues for most people, but of course many are simply finding it hard to run the game without general performance problems. That's where this guide comes in; it explains all the in-game settings and their actual function and impact, as well as all the advanced tweaking possible with the game engine.
