Havok Comments - 5/29/06 @ 5:32 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Havok
We received an email from David O'Meara, CEO of Havok. Dave offers the following perspective in response to an E3 2006 interview with Epic's Tim Sweeney and the subject of physics.

I read your interview with Tim and felt I would like to add my input. I have tried to keep to the point an offer my perspective. As I said Havok is cross platform and develops for all viable game platforms. Our ethos therefore is to be platform agnostic which means we do not see Aegia as an enemy in anyway. Should they prove to be viable I would look at supporting that platform also.

His response follows:

We could not agree more with Tim Sweeney’s general view and vision on physics trends in the PC game industry, per his article (interview) on nVnews.

In particular, Tim seems to share our view that the most credible role for add-on hardware in PC games is to delivery astounding special effects (aka “physics effects”). To this end, both the PPU and GPU promise to massively accelerate the computation of physically-based effects.

Havok is a cross platform provider developing for all consoles and the PC. We develop for all viable platforms. Havok believes that with regard to hardware enhanced physics the GPU is the most powerful, and cost effective technology available for accelerating physics – enabling simulations of 10’s of thousands of objects at top game speeds.

In our newest product, Havok FX, we’ve demonstrated that currently available GPU’s, priced at under $200 retail today, can accelerate physical phenomenon in very compelling ways (outperforming what has been shown to date from the PPU).

For consumers looking to spend additional $’s to accelerate physics in their games, why not spend money to purchase a new GPU for graphics, and relegate last year’s model to doing the physics via Havok FX?

This seems to us a far more meaningful investment on the part of game developers as well, since they do not face the “chicken and egg” challenge of waiting for an installed base of PPU-enabled PC’s. Today, the installed base of Havok FX compatible Shader Model 3 GPU’s in PC’s easily exceeds 50M units.

Overall, we are very confident that the trajectory for GPU technology will place the GPU above all other entrants in the hardware accelerated physics space – especially when considering the software, support, and retail momentum that GPU manufacturers bring to the table.

Check out the interview here.

HDD Comparison - 5/27/06 @ 3:21 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
A few days ago I mentioned that Newegg was selling the 300GB Seagate Barracuda hard drive for only $99. Since then, the price has dropped to $94.99 and includes free shipping. I am procuring components for a new system and placed an order for one on Tuesday. The drive arrived yesterday.

I tested the drive by installing it in my Athlon 64 X2 4800+ system, which has an Asus A8N-SLI Premium (nForce4) motherboard.

The following table is a comparison of the Seagate 300GB against two of the existing hard drives - a 74GB Western Digital Raptor and 80GB Western Digital Caviar.

Not bad for $99.

FireGL vs. Quadro - 5/26/06 @ 4:19 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
X-bit labs takes a look at professional graphics solutions from ATI and NVIDIA. The FireGL (ATI) and Quadro (NVIDIA) brands are designed for optimal performance in 3D modeling and CAD applications.

First of all it is a huge price difference that catches your eye: the professional solutions are a few times more expensive than the gaming cards. The price is justified by all other differences: the professional cards are targeted primarily at OpenGL applications for 3D modeling and CAD tasks for specialists. So, the special OpenGL driver specifically optimized for the corresponding software applications makes a significant part of the package.

NF4 SLI Intel M/B - 5/26/06 @ 8:36 am - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Tiger Direct is selling Abit's NI8 nForce4 SLI Intel Edition motherboard for only $69.99, which is a savings of $80. The NI8 supports socket 775 based Pentium 4 processors and the low price makes it an attractive choice to get involved with SLI on the Intel platform.

The passive (fanless) cooling used to cool the nForce4 chipset is a bonus.

Here's an example of the performance that is achievable when two of the most powerful graphics card are combined to form an SLI configuration.

MSI NX7600GT Review - 5/25/06 @ 6:42 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Brian Cochran has completed a review of MSI's NX7600GT graphics card. Based on the NVIDIA's GeForce 7600 GT GPU, the NX7600GT offers mid-range performance and is the only 7600 GT on the market to feature Video In/Video Out (VIVO) support.

Having an Xbox360 in my living room, my old Xbox was sitting around collecting dust. I decided to use it to test out the VIVO support. I installed the WDM Capture Drivers from the Driver CD. After Windows XP recognized the device, I went searching for a free TV Tuner software product. I found VirtualDub on SourceForge first, so I gave it a try.

After plugging in the Xbox to the VIVO adapter for the NX7600GT, and minor configuration on VirtualDub, I fired up the Xbox. Then I was playing Xbox right there on my PC monitor, with sound coming through my Logitech THX 5300's. Very, very cool.

On Freezing Issues - 5/25/06 @ 1:04 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
NVIDIA wanted to pass along the following information in regards to "random freezing" issues on overclocked versions of the GeForce 7900 GTX:

In working with our board partners, we discovered the cause of the random slowdown and temporary lockup problems experienced by various users of certain over-clocked 7900 GTX graphics boards.

Essentially, it was a case where the core and/or memory clocks were driven a bit too high above NVIDIA specifications, and the over-clocking margins weren't available on those specific boards.

Users who experience problems should contact the graphics card vendor to fix the problem.

We have learned from our board partners that the situation should now be under control.

Also, in regards to 7900 GTX "Corruption upon exiting a 3D app (3DMark06)":

This is a new issue that has just been reported, and our software team is looking at this.

GeForce 7900 Review - 5/18/06 @ 10:45 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
I've completed a review of the EVGA and XFX GeForce 7900 GTX graphics cards. These are the standard, non-overclocked models, which I've been using since March.

Benchmark results from two different systems are provided - one system uses the older, but hotter-than-magma running Pentium 4 Prescott, while our newest system (read upgrade review) is powered by an Athlon 64 X2 4800+. Motherboard clearance between the graphics cards and its affect on GPU temperatures is examined as well as room temperature in general.

With the ForceWare drivers featuring mixed vendor support, both graphics cards were combined in an SLI configuration, which worked flawlessly. Quality vs. high quality, transparency antialiasing, and Oblivion image quality comparison applets are also provided (note the comparison links labeled underneath certain screenshots).

And to top things off, I even became a member of the highly touted nV News Widescreen LCD Club...

Color on the 2405FPW is rich and vibrant, although I give a slight edge in this category to the Sony E540 CRT, which uses a Trinitron tube. However, the E540 weighs in at 67 pounds and is 19 inches deep. The physical characteristics of the 2405FPW are impressive as the unit weighs in at 17 pounds and is 9 inches deep. The edge of the screen on the 2405FPW is perfectly aligned with the monitor frame unlike the CRT, which requires manual adjustments to achieve a picture that is almost never square.

The height of the 2405FPS can be lowered or raised using the adjustable stand and a pivoting mechanism allows the monitor to be tilted as well as rotated 90° (portrait mode). The 2405FPW features 4 USB 2.0 ports and the following video connections: 15-pin D-sub (VGA), DVI-D, S-video, composite video and component video.

7900 GT and SLI - 5/16/06 @ 9:26 am - By: MUYA - Source: Browsing
X-bit labs reviews a EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GT CO SuperClocked review, EVGA's pre-factory overclocked GeForce 7900 GT card. This card is clocked at 550MHz core and 1.58 GHz memory quite a bit faster than 450 core and 1.32 GHz memory as reccomended by NVIDIA. GeForce 7900 GTs seem to be very overclockable and hence this pre-factory overclock but, be aware since this card is pre-factory overclocked, it doesn't have much headroom in terms of further overclocking. EVGA guarantees that this card will work as spec'ed with a warranty. EVGA is abit skimpy on the bundle but, the performance of this card probably makes up for it.

The performance of the EVGA solution is much higher than that of a reference GeForce 7900 GT and in some cases it is even as fast as a more expensive GeForce 7900 GTX, which definitely makes e-GeForce 7900 GT CO SuperClocked a very attractive purchase.

PC Stats on the other hand, reviews Gigabyte's GA-8N-SLI Quad Royal Motherboard. This Intel nForce4 motherboard is interesting that it offers four x16 PCI express ports through a combination of nVidia nForce4 SLI C19 Intel Edition chipset (as the northbridge chipset) and the nForce4 SLI CK804 chipset (as southbridge chipset). What this means is you have potential to run two cards in SLI at full x16 lanes and that's what PC Stats did, tests two GeForce 7800 GTX cards on this motherboard. Theoretically you can also run four cards in quad SLI on this system. Be aware though, this motherboard is also on the pricey side.

LegitReviews have an article on the recently announced NVIDIA Enhanced Performance Profiles (EPP) for DDR2 memory. This technology aims to help not only the casual user but also the enthusiatic overclocker. This is possible by using unused portions of the SPD EEPROM to house other information not defined by JEDEC SPD definition.

Here we see just why NVIDIA wanted to impliment EPP on their chipsets. They wanted to deliver a new level of memory performance and reduce the number of compatibility issues that many of us encounter on enthusiast motherboards. NVIDIA was also very open in letting us know that they are easily getting DDR2 memory frequencies over 1.2GHz on their reference platforms! NVIDIA firmly believes that by placing EPP settings in the SPD that they will enhance the overclocking experience for all users and give the memory experts the information of unparalled control of memory timings.

NVIDIA Unveils a New Open Standard Memory Specification Designed to Provide Higher Levels of System Performance

Launch Partner Corsair Will Be the First to Bring Products With New Enhanced Performance Profiles (EPP) to Market

SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), the worldwide leader in programmable graphics processor technologies, today announced the results of a collaborative memory development effort called Enhanced Performance Profiles, or EPP, which allows consumers to easily expose new, advanced performance memory settings built into high performance memory DIMMs for even higher levels of overall PC system performance. In addition, NVIDIA also announced today that Corsair Memory, the worldwide leader in design and manufacture of high performance memory, is the first memory vendor to announce support for the new EPP specification, and is expected to have new EPP-based memory DIMMs available in the channel later this month.

"Enhanced Performance Profiles are a significant change in the way overclocking and performance hardware compatibility is defined and sold. The industry now has a new standard on how a performance memory SPD should be written and communicated with the motherboard BIOS," said John Beekley, VP of Applications Engineering at Corsair Memory. "Our expectation is that EPP will be adopted by major motherboard companies, core-logic manufacturers, and other memory companies."

512MB GF 7900GT's - 5/13/06 @ 5:30 am - By: MikeC - Source: gsanford
Received word in regards to the availability of the GeForce 7900 GT, in a 512MB configuration, in Australia and the UK (not sure about the US). There are currently three models on the market:

- Gainward BLISS Geforce 7900 GT 512MB "Goes Like Hell"
- XpertVision 7900 GT Sonic
- Sparkle Calibre P790

Gainward BLISS Geforce 7900 GT 512MB Goes Like Hell

The Gainward and XpertVision cards are identical, except for PCB color and labelling, as both companies are subsiduaries of Palit. The GPU on the model from Sparkle is 50MHz less (500MHz vs. 550MHz) than the cards from Gainward and XpertVision.

I believe they offer exceptional value for the money and should be aggresively pushed at those considering an ATI X1800 XT because of its 512MB of memory.

Jacob's E3 Report - 5/11/06 @ 5:12 am - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Jacob's has put together a report about his first day at E3. Nrdstrm, who is accompanying Jacob, is doing the camera work. Unfortunately, their tripod broke, but they were able to purchase a new one and will be uploading their video clips soon.

The guys took some sweet pics and share their thoughts on Crysis BF2142, and Flatout 2. At NVIDIA's booth they checked out Enemy Territory Quake Wars and found this quad SLI rig powering Flight Simulator X.

They located Intel and dug up some information on their upcoming Conroe processor and also visited ATI's booth. They conclude the report with a teaser pic.

Earnings Conference - 5/10/06 @ 2:03 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Yahoo Finance
NVIDIA will be holding their quarterly earnings conference call tomorrow. The event begins with opening statements from Michael Hara – Vice President, Investor Relations and Communications. Chief Financial Officer Marvin D. Burkett will follow with a report on NVIDIA's financial status and outlook. The second part of the conference call will feature a financial analyst Q&A session with Jen-Hsun Huang – Co-Founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of NVIDIA.

I normally listen in on this event and find the Q&A session interesting. You can pick up tidbits on future products and where the company is heading. In fact it can be quite entertaining since Jen-Hsun is technical by nature and won't hold back if he gets into a technical argument with a financial analyst

Those of you who bought into NVIDIA a few years back and managed to sit on the investment must be feeling pretty good by now.

You really like those black triangles, huh? Three 2 for 1 stock splits!

Look for more record-breaking numbers tomorrow.

EVGA Signature Series - 5/04/06 @ 10:46 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Graphics Card Forum
EVGA is releasing a Signature Series edition of their e-GeForce 7900 GT, which approaches the clock speed of the more powerful GeForce 7900 GTX. The standard GeForce 7900 GT debuted two months ago with a core speed of 450MHz and memory speed of 1320MHz.

Increasing economies of scale in the production process combined with a custom cooling solution has allowed the core clock of the e-GeForce 7900 GT to reach at a whopping 600MHz. The core clock of the GeForce 7900 GTX is 650MHz. The memory operates at 1600MHz, which matches the GeForce 7900 GTX.

Although the GeForce 7900 GTX and GeForce 7900 GT are essentially the same GPUs, the GT model is usually equipped with 256MB of graphics memory, while the GTX contains 512MB.

The Signature Series edition of the e-GeForce 7900 GT is equipped with 256MB of graphics memory and is being introduced at a MSRP of $399.99.

Graphics News - 5/03/06 @ 7:26 am - By: MUYA - Source: Various
Tom's Hardware has their preview of GeForce 7900 GX2 Quad Sli up for mass consumption. Performance is examined at low and high resolutions and with the issues reported, they seemed to be very chuffed about it. They also report that Quad SLI will not be available to DIY'ers and you will have to order a Quad SLI from system integrators such as Falcon Northwest, iBuyPower, CyberPowerPC, Dell, Alienware, and Widow.

Tech Report on the other hand has a review of a new player on the multi-GPU rendering block, mainly S3 and their Multichrome technology. They preview S3's Multichrome with a pair of S3 Chrome S27's. Each Chrome S27 GPU has 8 pixel pipelines and 4 Vertex shading units and is DX 9.0 compatible with SM 2.0 capabilities.

Right now S3 and Chrome S27 Multichrome can implement AFR although SFR is in works apparently. Even multicore CPU optmization through a checkbox is supported. Compared to other dual GPU technologies, and S3's entry into this field, Tech Report didn't have too much of a problem getting S3's Multichrome to work on games and applications they were testing.

What is more is S3's implementation will work in any chipset and it is not exclusive. S3 maybe an alternative and viable setup if your budget is limited and you want a multi GPU setup.
