Optimizing 3D Apps - 6/29/07 @ 12:38 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
The NVIDIA Developer blog has an interesting post on some of the things that go on while optimizing a 3D game or application. FPS Creator X10, which will allow users to create their own First Person Shooter games, was the subject of this exercize.

The focus this month has been on the speed of the engine, and the fluid performance of the games created. We performed extensive tests on all aspects of the engine, under as many conditions as the level editor would allow. We identified some key areas where speed could be increased, and bottlenecks widened. Read on...

Roy Taylor Interview - 6/27/07 @ 8:13 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
Bit-Tech has published an interview with NVIDIA's Roy Taylor. An intersting read and a variety of topics were discussed including The Way It's Meant To Be Played program, developer relations, Windows Vista, and DirectX 10.

Last week, we had the chance to talk with Roy Taylor about how Nvidia works with developers under its The Way It’s Meant To Be Played developer relations programme. In addition, we talked about some of the games that are coming out in the near future and also touched on where PC gaming is heading in the future.

Roy was previously Vice President of worldwide GPU sales at Nvidia and in September 2006 he moved to become Vice President of Content Relations. He is now responsible for the development and support of third-party PC games along with Nvidia developer tools and publications.

He spends most of his day liaising with developers, talking about next-generation PC games and, of course, playing them too. If there’s anyone that knows about what games are worth playing later this year, Roy’s our man.

Not happy with the 3D performance of your high-end PC? Need a graphics card capable of driving your new 30-inch LCD, which boasts a native resolution of 2560x1600? Then look no further than the GeForce 8800 Ultra XXX Edition from XFX.

XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra XXX Edition

It's been over a month since NVIDIA announced the GeForce 8800 Ultra and prices have dropped. Does this change things? You bet - especially when you can get a $50 rebate until June 30:

Based on the (benchmark) results, the XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra XXX Edition would offer similar value as a stock GeForce 8800 GTX at a price of $671.65 (0.95 per frame x 707 frames) or an overclocked GeForce 8800 GTX at a price of $699.93 (0.99 per frame x 707 frames).

NVIDIA Tesla GPU Computing Processor Ushers in the Era of Personal Supercomputing.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 20 High-performance computing in fields like the geosciences, molecular biology, and medical diagnostics enable discoveries that transform billions of lives every day. Universities, research institutions, and companies in these and other fields face a daunting challenge: as their simulation models become exponentially complex, so does their need for vast computational resources.

NVIDIA took a giant step in meeting this challenge with today's announcement of a new class of processors based on a revolutionary new graphics processing unit (GPU). Under the NVIDIA Tesla brand, NVIDIA will offer a family of GPU computing products that will place the power previously available only from supercomputers in the hands of every scientist and engineer. Today's workstations will be transformed into "personal supercomputers."

DX10 Report Card - 6/18/07 @ 3:09 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
ExtremeTech has posted a couple of articles on DirectX 10, which is Microsoft's game development Applications Programming Interface (API) exclusive to Windows Vista.

The first article is a brief report card by Loyd Case, who gives "DirectX 10 in combination with the new generation of DirectX 10 hardware a C-. The job gets done, but it's not pretty, elegant, nor particularly inspiring."

The article also features comments from NVIDIA's Nick Stam (Technical Marketing) concerning the new Call of Juarez benchmark.

The second article covers the DirectX 10 features in Call of Juarez and measures performance on various NVIDIA and ATI-based graphics cards.

XFX GeForce 8500 GT - 6/17/07 @ 8:14 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
For the casual gamer, the XFX GeForce 8500 GT may fit the bill with its sub-$100 price tag. Although today is Father's Day, Jonathan Martini recently picked out the card for his mother's system, which is powered by a 3.6GHz Pentium 4 "Prescott" CPU. Based on the benchmark results, game performance appears to be optimal at a resolution of 1024x768 with the possibility of applying 2x antialiasing depending on the title.

The XFX GeForce 8500 GT is DirectX 10 ready and fully capable of powering Vista's new graphical features. PureVideo2 support adds full decode capabilities for HD content and the card features HDCP capabilities, Dual-Link DVI support for resolutions up to 2560x1600 and an awesome double lifetime warranty.

Quake Wars News - 6/17/07 @ 7:36 am - By: MikeC - Source: Forums
With the public beta of Enemy Territory Quake Wars due out this week, the folks over at fpsadmin have posted the readme and game guide for the online strategic shooter.

The game will run on Windows XP and Windows Vista and requires a 128MB GeForce 6600GT or Radeon X800 or higher graphics card. A 256MB GeForce 6800 GT or Radeon X850 are recommeded.

Believe it or not, but you can pick up a GeForce 6600 GT at Tiger Direct for only $29.97 (with a $40 mail in rebate until 6/30). This would be an ideal time to add that second GeForce 6600 GT to form an SLI configuration or even upgrade to a GPU that supports a 256-mit memory bus such as the GeForce 7900 GS (~$150).

Don't forget that you can still play the original version of Enemy Territory for free!

Inno3D iChill 8600GTS XStriker3 - 6/05/07 @ 10:13 pm - By: MikeC - Source:
Steve Angelly takes a look at Inno3d's iChill 8600GTS XStriker.

I am impressed with the capabilities of Inno3D's iChill cooling application on the 8600GTS XStriker3. I purposely overclocked the GPU another 9% (761MHz) above the factory setting of 705MHz to generate more heat stress. This tactic did not seem to faze the iChill cooling solution at all.

SPECViewperf 10 - 6/05/07 @ 3:11 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
The Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) has released SPECViewperf 10. SPECViewperf is an OpenGL benchmark that is suited to measure the performance of professional workstations.

SPECViewperf 10 is designed to be a predictor of application performance for applications such as CATIA, 3ds max, Maya, and SolidWorks. The benchmark (600MB) is available to download for Windows XP and Windows Vista.

The SPECopcSM project group's SPECviewperf 10 is totally new performance evaluation software. In addition to features found in previous versions, it now provides the ability to compare performance of systems running in higher-quality graphics modes that use full-scene anti-aliasing, and measures how effectively graphics subsystems scale when running multithreaded graphics content.
