PhysX Beta Driver - 6/26/08 @ 6:31 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
NVIDIA has released a public beta driver supporting GeForce PhysX. The 177.39 driver with PhysX support is now available at NVIDIA.com. Note that GPU PhysX hardware acceleration is currently available for the GeForce 9800 GTX, GeForce GTX 280, and GeForce GTX 260 GPUs.

There might be a 177.41 WHQL driver posted today. However, this driver was actually built before 177.39 and does not support PhysX. 177.39 is NVIDIA's most up to date driver.

How can I try out PhysX today?

  • 3DMark Vantage supports PhysX. This driver package will move the CPU Test 2 Physics workload to the GPU.

  • Download the Unreal Tournament 3 PhysX Mod Pack at nZone and instantly get access to three new levels that have a ton of cool PhysX features, all accelerated by the GPU.
Note: NVIDIA PhysX System Software v8.06.12 can also be downloaded separately here.

It's A Party! - 6/25/08 @ 6:33 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Today was a great day for PC gamers as AMD unleashed their 4850 and 4870 Graphics Processing Units, both of which offer excellent performance for the price. The launch was strikingly similar to NVIDIA's launch of the GeForce 9600 GT back in February, which brought high-end game performance to the masses. Overnight, the GeForce 9600 GT became an outstanding value when gaming at the resolution of 1680x1050. What AMD did today with their 4850 and 4870 was raise the bar to the resolution of 1920x1200 and higher. It will be interesting to see how NVIDIA responds as price cuts across the board are certainly a possibility.

I finally got serious about using Windows Vista 64-bit over the weekend and have enjoyed using it thus far. The new hardware I treated myself to was an incentive to upgrade :) The upgrade wasn't exactly earth shattering as I moved from an Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 to a Core 2 Duo E8500, a BFG nForce 680i SLI motherboard to an EVGA nForce 790i SLI Ultra and 4GB of Corsair DDR2 800MHz memory to 4GB of DDR3 1333MHz. I plan to re-run all of the benchmarks and more from our GeForce GTX 280 review on the upgraded system and report back.

Another project that I'm looking forward to is assembling a system with AMD's Phenom 9850 Quad Core processor. Asus kindly provided their M3N78 Pro motherboard, which features NVIDIA's Hybrid SLI and GeForce 8300 motherboard GPU. I also picked up Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect, while Tom Clancy's Rainbox Six Vegas 2 was bundled with the processor. Game on!

Review Updated - 6/18/08 @ 4:49 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
I've updated our review of the EVGA GeForce GTX 280 FTW Edition to include benchmark results showing the minimum frame rate. Although I collected this data during testing, there was not enough time to include the results before the review went live. Here is a synopsis of the results at the resolution of 2560x1600 with 4x antialiasing applied.

Average frame rate results at the resolution of 2560x1600 with 4x AA reveal the GeForce GTX 280 outperforming the GeForce 8800 GTX by an overall average of 99%. The GeForce GTX 280 clearly favors games based on Unreal Engine 3 as the minimum frame rate in our BioShock benchmark was a whopping 208% higher than the GeForce 8800 GTX! A video of the benchmark, which is based on actual gameplay, can be viewed here.

GeForce GTX 280! - 6/16/08 @ 8:04 am - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Today NVIDIA is introducing two new Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) based on their GeForce GTX 200 Series - the long-awaited GeForce GTX 280 and GeForce GTX 260. Both GPUs are high-end products targeted at gaming enthusiasts and will be featured on graphics cards retailing for $649 and $399 respectively.

The GeForce GTX 280 is NVIDIA's most complex and powerful GPU to date and contains over 1.4 billion transistors. Based on a second generation unified architecture, the GeForce GTX 280 functions as a multi-purpose processor capable of accelerating real-time 3D graphics as well as computationally intensive parallel-computing applications. With a total of 240 shader processors, 80 texture processors, and 1GB of frame buffer memory, the GeForce GTX 280 will provide unprecedented levels of 3D graphics performance.

Although we only had a few days to skim the surface of the GeForce GTX 280's capabilities, the EVGA FTW model performed flawlessly during our 3D testing under Windows XP. This model is moderately overclocked from the reference model and in a closed case, reached a peak temperature of 79° C. Fan noise is noticeable under load, but not overbearing.

The GeForce GTX 280 outperformed the GeForce 8800 GTX at the resolution of 1920x1200, but delivered the best bang for the buck at 2560x1600 and with high quality (16xQ) antialiasing at 1680x1050. Overall increases in the average frame rate at these settings ranged from 57% to 92%.

Apple's OpenCL - 6/12/08 @ 12:13 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Yahoo News
The role of the graphics processing unit (GPU) is gaining momentum in the PC market as Apple is proposing a new processing standard called OpenCL, or Open Computing Language. Apple's CEO Steve Jobs made the following comments in regards to NVIDIA, which is exposing GPUs to parallel processing applications via their CUDA Technology.

"Basically it lets you use graphics processors to do computation," he said. "It's way beyond what Nvidia or anyone else has, and it's really simple."

The article goes on to say that OpenCL could end up being a major breakthrough in providing multi-core programming tools and raises the possibility that future Macs could be built on these technologies in lieu of Intel processors.

Time To Upgrade! - 6/09/08 @ 6:30 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
While kids dig Toys "R" Us, adults are quite fond of Newegg. It's been a while since I upgraded, but I bit the bullet and will be upgrading my test system shortly. A new power supply is also on the way.

NVIDIA vs. Intel - 6/06/08 @ 6:48 am - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
As NVIDIA and Intel continue their fued on the importance of the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) in personal computers, Wall Street is of the opinion that NVIDIA will remain dominant in the discrete graphics market.

Nvidia is a dominant player in the market of graphics microprocessors where it had competed with ATI Technologies, which was acquired by Advanced Micro Devices Inc. about two years ago. Meanwhile, Intel, the world's No. 1 maker of computer semiconductors, is planning to join the fray, which some analysts have said could spell trouble for Nvidia.

Last week, Krishna Shankar of JMP Securities upgraded Nvidia to market outperform, saying "worries over competition from Intel in discrete PC graphics and high-end computing are greatly exaggerated."

Analyst Blake Fischer of Stifel, Nicolaus & Company, who upgraded Nvidia to buy on May 9 following the latest earnings report, echoed this view, saying, "The competitive threat posed by Intel and its potential entry into the GPU market is misunderstood and in our opinion somewhat overestimated."
