Gigabyte CPU cooler - 7/31/04 @ 10:51 pm - By: MaxPower - Source: e-mail
TrustedReviews has completed their review of Gigabyte's first CPU coolor product offering. It has some nice blue lighting. Check out the full review to see how it actually performs.

Considering that this is Gigabyte’s first foray into the market these two coolers are certainly quite distinctive looking. Gigabyte offers four CPU coolers and the two we are looking at here fall into its ‘Ultra’ range. The ‘Ultra’ badge refers to the fact that they are constructed of copper, which is more effective at dissipating heat than the aluminium alternative. The downside to copper coolers is that they are heavier, but as long as your PC isn’t subject to any overt knocks it shouldn’t be an issue.

Longhorn Graphics - 7/31/04 @ 1:36 am - By: MaxPower - Source: Email
Dave Salvator, Senior Technology Analyst for Audio, 3D Graphics and Gaming at ExtremeTech has a very interesting article that covers part of the recently held Microsoft Meltdown conference.

Blythe didn't clearly define which high-definition rendering format(s) would be rolled into WGF, though it's reasonable to assume that Industrial Light & Magic's OpenEXR format will be one of them, since Nvidia is already supporting it. High dynamic range rendering only became possible with the arrival of DirectX 9, which introduced floating-point accuracy to color information in 3D graphics. Microsoft also didn't specify which normal map compression format would be implemented, though ATI's 3Dc format seems a likely candidate.

Gigabyte 6800 GT - 7/29/04 @ 9:23 am - By: MUYA - Source: 3dchipset
Legion Hardware have reviewed the Gigabyte GeForce 6800 GT. The Gigabyte also sports the no frills reference NVIDIA look as very few AIB have implemented their own HSF designs. Performance wise, Legion Hardware found this GeForce GT to be worth it's price. Looking at their benchmarks and those around the web for GeForce 6800 GTs, I tend to agree.

It would seem NVIDIA has now got back on track after their previous FX generation upset. The GeForce 6800 GT is a first class product. Not only has the frame rate performance dazzled me, but so too has the stunning visual quality and highly stable performance

GF 6800 Reviews - 7/28/04 @ 9:06 am - By: MUYA - Source: Browsing
HardOCP has a review of a BFGTech GeForce 6800U OC with Water Block. This BFG card comes with a GPU waterblock installed on it and once you get it running, the GeForce 6800 Ultra GPU is clocked to run at 470MHz by default! Thats almost the clock that people were speculating the GeForce 6800 Ultra would debut at.

PC Perspectives in the meantime have a eVGA e-GeForce 6800 GT review up too. The GeForce 6800 GT cards are proving to be a real value for money in terms of cost for performance. The GeForce 6800 GTs perform near enough to the levels of GeForce 6800 Ultras and are $100 cheaper.

Tweak Town on the other hand has a GPU Performance Comparison article which includes cards from previous generation to the new ones from both NVIDIA and ATI. This article will shed some light for those people with a NV3X or R3XX cards as to what performance boost they will expect if they purchase a card with a latest generation GPU.

AOpen 6800 Ultra - 7/27/04 @ 7:59 am - By: MUYA - Source: E-mail
Hexus has emailed us that their review of a retail AOpen Aeolus 6800 Ultra DVD256(E) is up for your reading pleasure. Rys stress tested this card on a few games and synthetic benches with antialiasing and anisotropic filtering enabled at 1600 by 1200. Even at this resolution, AOpen's Aeolus GeForce 6800 Ultra just keeps asking for more which shows how powerful the GeForce 6800 Ultra GPU really is although, the AOpen's HSF was a little too loud for Hexu's liking. Rys also managed to overclock the card to a whopping 468MHz core and 1.23 GHz (DDR) memory.

If the best of the best is what you're looking for, the Aeolus's no-nonsense approach translated into a keen price, makes the performance, features, image quality and noise seem very very attractive.

Doom 3 Ultra Quality - 7/26/04 @ 4:05 pm - By: MikeC - Source: HardOCP
id Software programmer Robert Duffy updated his .plan file with information about Doom 3's "Ultra" quality option, which is being recommended for graphics cards with 512MB of memory. He also covers the software development tools they found useful during the development of Doom 3.

In Ultra quality, we load each texture; diffuse, specular, normal map at full resolution with no compression. In a typical DOOM 3 level, this can hover around a whopping 500MB of texture data. This will run on current hardware but obviously we cannot fit 500MB of texture data onto a 256MB card and the amount of texture data referenced in a give scene per frame ( 60 times a second ) can easily be 50MB+. This can cause some choppiness as a lot of memory bandwidth is being consumed.

It does however look fantastic :-) and it is certainly playable on high end systems but due to the hitching that can occur we chose to require a 512MB Video card before setting this automatically.

High quality uses compression ( DXT1,3,5 ) for specular and diffuse and no compression for normal maps. This looks very very close to Ultra quality but the compression does cause some loss. This is the quality that for instance the PC Gamer review was played in.

Medium quality uses compression for specular, diffuse, and normal maps. This still looks really really good but compressing the normal maps can produce a few artifacts especially on hard angled or round edges. This level gets us comfortably onto 128MB video cards.

Low quality does everything medium quality does but it also downsizes textures over 512x512 and we downsize specular maps to 64x64 in this mode as well. This fits us onto a 64MB video card.

NVIDIA Press Release - 7/26/04 @ 12:25 pm - By: MaxPower - Source: Browsing
There are two new press releases today from NVIDIA. The first one below regarding Doom 3 is not really new news to most of us, but it's interesting to see it mentioned as an official press release.

NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra and GeForce 6800 GT Chips Proclaimed Best for Doom 3.

SANTA CLARA, CA—JULY 26, 2004—NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), the worldwide leader in visual processing solutions, today announced that independent third-party testing confirms that the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra and the GeForce 6800 GT graphics processing units (GPUs) deliver faster performance than comparable competitive offerings in Doom 3, regarded as one of the most highly-anticipated PC games in history.

NVIDIA Mobile GPU Selected for Innovative New Toshiba Line

SANTA CLARA, CA—JULY 26, 2004—NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), the worldwide leader in visual processing solutions, today announced that the GeForce FX Go5200 graphics processing unit (GPU) has been chosen by Toshiba for its Qosmio E15-AV101, a highly integrated mobile audio/visual (AV) personal computing device targeted at today’s modern household.

MSI GeForce Ultra - 7/26/04 @ 10:53 am - By: MaxPower - Source: Email
GamePC has up a new review of the MSI GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB card. They were able to reach a stable core clock of 460MHz and benchmarked games including: Far Cry, Halo, Unreal Tournament 2004, Battlefield Vietnam, Battlefield 1942 and Painkiller.

While we had almost lost faith in the GeForce 6800-series after such a long delay from product launch to product availability, the final product is very impressive in almost all respects. The GeForce 6800 Ultra puts nVidia absolutely neck and neck with ATI’s Radeon X800 XT product in overall performance, with a slight edge towards nVidia. The GeForce 6800 Ultra can play any modern game with smooth frame rates and great image quality. Id Software’s official recommendation for nVidia’s 6800-series technology for Doom 3 certainly gives this product line a very important edge over ATI. Credibility with Carmack.

Sparkle 6800 Ultra - 7/26/04 @ 12:51 am - By: MaxPower - Source: Accelenation
Accelenation has reviewed the Sparkle GeForce 6800 Ultra. There are some interesting details in this review such as their examination of power requirements (see quote below) and inclusion of the TV-out feature, which most reviews omit.

The following image shows the measured amperes entering each auxiliary power connection. These figures have been taken using a digital meter, which unfortunately is incapable of showing any high-frequency fluctuations. The fact that the individual 5V readings under load do not sum to the measured overall figure, is a clear indication that the 5V line in particular must undergo rapid fluctuations that are not wholly reflected by these meter readings.

Luckily, power supplies are designed to deliver momentary peeks of power and so these measurements remain a good indication of the average level of auxiliary power required. Our readings would seem to suggest that this card draws around 45 Watts of auxiliary power under a stationary Windows desktop display, rising to an average of 70 Watts under gaming. A ballpark figure for the maximum auxiliary power drain would be around 85 Watts, which is in addition to the 25 Watts that can be drawn through the AGP8X slot.

GF 6800LE Preview - 7/26/04 @ 12:40 am - By: MaxPower - Source: t-break
The GeForce 6800LE may be limited to OEM channels, but if it ever is available as a retail offering, its sub-$200 price will be very attractive to many. The folks over at t-break have a preview.

The card is identical to the standard 6800 as far as looks and size are concerned, however, its slightly under-powered. With a little help from Scott Wasson at The Tech Report, we believe that the number of pixel pipelines has been reduced from 12 to 8 although we haven’t received any info from nVidia. The core has also been dropped from 325 to 320 although memory size and speed remain identical to the 6800 - 128MB/350MHz (or 700MHz DDR). We asked for a price indication and were told that the card should be about 30% less than the standard 6800 which would put it at under US$200- a very sweet spot.

Doom 3 H/W Guide - 7/25/04 @ 1:35 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
id Software and HardOCP will be publishing more benchmark results from Doom 3 throughout the upcoming week. The results, which were accumulated based on 65 hours of testing, will be revealed in their "DOOM 3 [H]ardware Guide.

Brent (Justice) and I (Kyle Bennet) worked about 65 hours or so from Tuesday afternoon till early this morning at id putting together this data. We brought all of our own test equipment and we DID use the DOOM 3 GOLD MASTER for testing along with 61.76s and 8.05s.

GF3, TI4600, 5800, 5900, 6800, 680GT, 6800U are all coming this week. As well as 8500, 9600XT, 9800Pro, X800Pro, X800XT. There are probably a couple I missed in there as well.

With Doom 3 coming out, I suddenly have the urge to develop a tweak guide. Wow! I had a similar urge when Quake 3 came out and I eventually published Part 1 and Part 2 of "The Quake 3 Arena Tune Up Guide."

You're excited. You just bought a graphics accelerator based on NVIDIA's GeForce 256 (replace with GeForce 6800) and being in a rush to get home, you inadvertently run a few stop lights. You install it in your system, give it a little overclocking luvin', and are ready to show Quake 3 Arena (replace with Doom 3) who's in charge.

Oh, yeah. Bring it on!

Far Cry Patch Recall - 7/23/04 @ 2:04 pm - By: MaxPower - Source: ShackNews
It appears that Ubi Soft Entertainment has recalled the 1.2 patch for Far Cry.

Ubisoft let us know that the Far Cry 1.2 patch released a few days ago has been recalled. According to the publisher "Far Cry patch 1.2 has shown unexpected behaviour on specific hardware configurations. These matters are mainly due to incompatibilities with several optimisations brought lately to the code, with the intent to please a large number of users". CryTek is working on a fixed version of the update to be released "as soon as possible".

This is echoed over at 3DGamers as well.

In an unusual move, Ubi Soft Entertainment has recalled the recent version 1.2 retail patch for Far Cry, due to "unexpected behaviour on specific hardware configurations. These matters are mainly due to incompatibilities with several optimisations brought lately to the code, with the intent to please a large number of users." Consequently we have restored the version 1.1 patch.

Feel free to discuss this in our forums.

GF 6800 & 6800 GT - 7/22/04 @ 8:31 am - By: MUYA - Source: Email
Rys over at Hexus has posted his review of reference GeForce 6800 GT and GeForce samples. The GT is of course the lowered clocked version in terms of core and memory of the Ultra whereas, the Non Ultra is a 3 quad GPU with 128 MB onboard only as compared to the 256MB on GTs and Ultras. Both cards are benched on a few synthetic applications as well as retail games at resolutions including 1600 by 1200 with antialiasing and anisotrpic filtering turned on. Furthermore, the cards are put in a head to head with ATI's offering of a x800 XT PE and X800 Pro. Click on the headline to read the review.

Its performance is competitive with the Ultra for the most part, and NVIDIA may wonder in the future why they clocked it so close. I use an Athlon FX-51 for my testing and while it's not the fastest CPU on the planet these days, it's damn close. CPU limitation is still hard to overcome, so choosing the GT is wise.

The performance of the plain 6800 comes in just where it should, with around 70% of the GT's performance in most cases. If NVIDIA are able to tweak the 128MB texture/data overflow case in a few apps, the 6800 looks great for those looking to spend around £200. It's usefully faster than a 9800XT in most DX9-class titles.

Doom 3 Benchmarks! - 7/21/04 @ 7:45 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Graphics Forum
At HardOCP. An excerpt from John Carmack of id Software first:

It should be noted that all of the modern cards play the game very well, and benchmark scores should not be the be-all-end-all decision maker. Scores will probably improve somewhat with future driver releases, and other factors like dual slots or dual power connectors can weigh against some of the high end cards.

What the heck are you waiting for! Click me!

Discuss in the NVIDIA Graphics or Games forum.

Here is a piece from the conclusion.

The NVIDIA 6800GT certainly stood out among the crowd as its DOOM 3 framerates continually outpaced the Radeon X800XT-PE that currently has a list price that is $100 more than the GeForce 6800GT. NVIDIA has told us more than once that the 6800 series was "designed to play DOOM 3," and the truth of that statement is now glaringly obvious.

Don't forget about games that will be based on Doom 3's engine - Quake 4 and rumors of RTCW 2.

GF 6800 Reviews - 7/21/04 @ 10:28 am - By: MUYA - Source: Various
Tom's Hardware today takes a look at Gainward's CoolFX Ultra/2600. The graphics card powered by a GeForce 6800 Ultra GPU pre-modded GPU water block and which comes with a water cooling setup as part of the bundle. The name of the game would be to overclock the bejesus out of the Gainward 6800 Ultra.

As mentioned above, this utility overclocks the card to the 450 MHz core and 1200 MHz memory speeds guaranteed by Gainward. However, you can set even higher clock speeds manually. We found that our card had a clock speed limit of 470 MHz core and 1252 MHz of memory.

Elite Bastards meanwhile reviews a PNY GeForce 6800 GT. These GeForce 6800 GT boards are definately worth the $399 they MSRP for, as they perform to within the range of the more expensive GeForce 6800 Ultras and x800 XTs.

The price to performance ratio of the GeForce 6800GT is simply astounding, especially if you want to factor in the probability of being able to overclock to 6800 Ultra speeds.

In his article on overclocking the 2.8GHz LGA775 Pentium 4, Kyle Bennet of HardOCP encountered power related issues with the GeForce 6800 Ultra and GeForce 6800 GT on ABIT's AA8 DuraMAX motherboard. Following an investigation into this issue, Kyle found out that "under heavy stress and overclocking scenarios, the 6800s would eventually fail every single time, unless the GeForce 6800 was sufficiently powered."

However, when tested with Vantec's Stealth 520watt PSU, which is supplied with the proper 24-pin power plug that feeds the PCI-Express X16 slot, the system offered rock solid stability clocked at 255MHz FSB with a 1:1 memory bus ratio.

To put it succinctly, it looks as if the 925X enthusiast that has a GeForce 6800 series video card in mind for his system had better look to upgrading his power supply as well to one that utilizes the 24-pin power plug so the PCI-Express card will get the needed power.

6800 GT PCI Express - 7/19/04 @ 6:01 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
SimHQ takes their first look at the new generation of 3D graphics hardware with a PCI Express version of NVIDIA's GeForce 6800 GT reference board. SimHQ's Benchmark Suite is brutal and includes titles such as Lock On: Modern Air Combat, Flight Simulator 2004, IL-2: Sturmovik Forgotten Battles, Falcon 4, NASCAR Racing 2003 Season and Far Cry. The article also covers antialiasing, texture filtering, and overclocking.

The PCIe GeForce 6800 GT offers excellent performance for its price. The card burned through SimHQ’s benchmark suite setting new highs in frame rates, with no visual glitches or anomalies, and no compatibility or stability issues. The GT boards could very well become the Ti 4200s of their generation. NVIDIA has also improved the image quality that is produced by their chips, with better anti-aliasing quality at 4x samples and support now for 16x anisotropic filtering.

And the ForceWare driver panels give end users a simple yet elegant interface by which they can quickly adjust various settings and options; moreover, NVIDIA’s drivers have for months now supported individual game profiles, which enables users to easily apply different settings for each title they have installed.

PNY 6800 GT Review - 7/19/04 @ 5:48 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
Matt Burris over at 3DGPU sends word that they have reopened their web site with a brand new look and attitude. To celebrate the reopening and the new design of 3DGPU, they have posted a PNY Verto GeForce 6800GT 256MB video card review.

The review contains information on the new card using NVIDIA's latest 6800GT series chip, and includes pictures of the card, overclocking information, benchmarks in Far Cry, UT2004, and Call of Duty, plus commentary on the most important part - gaming.

The GeForce 6800GT is a down-clocked GeForce 6800 Ultra, which is the top-of-the-line of the new GeForce 6800 series. Meaning that it has the same features and specifications as the Ultra, but is slightly slower in core and memory clock speeds. However, this won’t stop most gamers from overclocking their GT to Ultra speeds (more on that later.)

NV40 Reviews - 7/19/04 @ 9:38 am - By: MUYA - Source: Various
Trusted Reviews reviews the uber expensive yet uber cool Gainward PowerPack! CoolFX Ultra/2600 TV-DVI-DVI. The Gainward model comes with a pre-modded GeForce 6800 Ultra card with a cool water block already installed on the card which covers the GPU and memory modules. Gainward also includes a water cooling kit because the PowerPack was designed with overclocking in mind and, Trusted Reviews certainly did overclock the card hard. In fact they ran the card stable upto 485 MHz core and 1400 MHz(DDR) memory. Does that wet your appetite for one of Gainwards's PowerPack! CoolFX Ultra/2600 ?

...there are standard and enhanced modes. Standard will set the card to run at 400/1100 for GPU/memory speeds, while enhanced increases this to 450/1200. We ran all the tests at enhanced mode but to see how far we could push the card we then ran them all at 485/1400MHz. This proved to be no problem for the Gainward, with the pump keeping the system cool at all times.

HardWare Avenue has a review of a reference NVIDIA GeForce 6800 up at their place. They investigate the benefits of SM 3.0 path of Far Cry over SM 2.0 in Far Cry as well as performance in other games. The GeForce 6800 should be a nice upgrade for those who do not want to spend a small fortune for a Ultra or even GT.

The 6800 series is looking to be one of Nvidia's best ever as far as value and performance goes, and the Geforce 6800 is a shining example of this - with 9800XT+ performance in most tasks it is clearly a winner, and not only is it cheaper than the 9800XT and 5950Ultra, it supports SM3.0, which could possibly become quite an advantage for Nvidia in the coming months, and also features 4 more pipelines (12 vs 8), and overclocks very nicely even with the reference cooler.

eVGA GF 6800 U - 7/18/04 @ 10:37 am - By: MUYA - Source: E-mail
I seemed to have missed this review of an eVGA e-Geforce 6800 Ultra over Neoseeker as it was posted July 9th. So head on over to read the review as Neoseeker not only compares the eVGA card to a Radeon XT PE but, also a GeForce FX 5950 Ultra card as well. Plenty of games are used at varying resolutions with different combination of antialiasing and anisotropic filtering. They found the eVGA e-GeForce 6800 Ultra a decent overclocker.

"Subsequent tweaking found a sweet spot at 465/1.22 where the eVga was happily rendering away. A 65 Mhz overclock on the core and a 122 Mhz overclock on the memory are quite good and are approaching the limits of the more exotic solutions from some other vendors. As useful as the detect optimal frequency feature is, note that it is not bulletproof but merely gives a rough guideline as to what a good starting point is for
experimentation with the clockrates. "

GeForce 6800 Review - 7/16/04 @ 10:07 am - By: MUYA - Source: Browsing
Extremetech has reviewed a reference NVIDIA GeForce 6800 card. These cards are expected to retail with a MSRP of $299 and is intended to headline NVIDIA's mainstream challenge in the market. This card is powered by a GeForce 6800 3 quad processing GPU and has 5 Vertex shading unit although Extremetech needs to modify their features table I think to reflect proper values. Mixed bag of results for the 6800 card, although it is faster than current generation cards (NVIDIA), it lags behind the new more powerful 4 quad GPUs like GeForce 6800 Ultra and x800 XTs and, higher clocked 3 quad GPU like x800 Pro but, the 6800 does have a trump card and that's its price.

At $300, the GeForce 6800 offers up good price/performance, particularly running at 1280x1024. It's a single-slot, single-Molex connector card whose lower clock rates should allow it to play nice in some small form-factor PC systems.

Far Cry 1.2 Patch - 7/15/04 @ 9:06 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Voodoo Extreme
Ubisoft's Matthieu Boulard has provided an update on the status of the upcoming version 1.2 patch for Far Cry.

Once again, we want to let you know that Far Cry patch 1.2 is close to being released. We were about to release this week as planned, when a hardware manufacturer code update forced us to modify the patch accordingly. It took a couple of days to make it work without breaking anything else. We think it is worth the extra wait, as it's all about making sure everyone enjoys the best experience possible, both in terms of gameplay and performance.

Yesterday, a new solid patch candidate left for what we hope is the last series of tests.

We are all looking forward to releasing this very ambitious Far Cry upgrade, and we know we need to give it our best to make sure we live up to your expectations.

BFG 6800 Ultra OC - 7/15/04 @ 9:29 am - By: MaxPower - Source: nV News
My review of the BFG Technologies GeForce 6800 Ultra OC is ready for you to check out. An ATI X800XT PE is used for default clock comparisons in the benchmarks. Emphasis is on Far Cry with the 1.2 patch which enables Shader Model 3.0 (SM3.0) on supporting hardware such as the NVIDIA 6800 family of cards.

nV News Review of the BFG GeForce 6800 Ultra OC

Also included is an image quality (IQ) investigation between the X800XT PE and the 6800 Ultra OC. I did not compare two different AF settings for the same card. I compared between the same (or different) AF settings of one card against the other.

Doom 3 Commentary - 7/14/04 @ 4:13 pm - By: MikeC - Source: HardOCP
CNN Money's Chris Morris has published a commentary on Doom 3. The potential impact of Doom 3 on the game industry, gameplay feedback, and who stands to profit from the sci-fi horror are some of the topics discussed.

Publisher Activision is the big winner, of course. Analysts estimate the game will add $150 million to $200 million in revenue to the company's second and third fiscal quarters. Graphics manufacturer nVidia also stands to gain, as its GeForce FX cards have been named the recommended video card for the game.

On a lesser scale, Intel and AMD could see a modest bump as "Doom 3" comes with some reasonably powerful system requirements.

Doom 3 Is Now Gold! - 7/14/04 @ 2:37 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Forums
Wow! Todd Hollenshead, who is the CEO at iD Software has announced that Doom 3 is finished and has entered manufacturing. When will you be able to pick it up?

Retailers in the States will be allowed to pick up games starting at 12:01 AM on August 3rd. The official street date is actually August 5th in the U.S.A., but some of your favorite stores will probably have it early for those of you who have to have it first. Check with your local retailer for that information.

Internationally, the game will take a few more days to make it to the store shelves. The UK will probably get it first, on or about August 6th. Everywhere else will probably be Friday, August 13th (que Twilight Zone Theme) or close to that date, with just a few exceptions (e.g. Russia and Poland). This isn't because we don't have love for you folks outside the U.S., but the localization and manufacturing process takes a bit longer outside the U.S. where we will have JVC run 24/7 to get the units built. I guess the European manufacturers prefer to give their employees nights and weekends off. Go figure!

A celebration is taking place here. Check out The Doom Guy here. Check out the press release here.

BFG GF 6800 GT OC - 7/13/04 @ 10:29 pm - By: MUYA - Source: Ghosthunter
Brent Justice reviews a BFG 6800 GT OC over at HardOCP. Overclocked out of the box, the BFG GeForce 6800 GT comes core clocked at 370 MHz. GeForce 6800 GTs look more and more appealing these days.

One of the most important aspects of the BFGTech GeForce 6800GT OC that we discovered is that there really is not a huge difference in performance between the GeForce 6800Ultra and the BFGTech GeForce 6800GT OC. We can’t say there weren’t any differences at all though, because there were, just not gigantic ones.

BFG GF 6800 GT OC - 7/13/04 @ 8:50 am - By: MUYA - Source: Browsing
While browsing for today's roundup, I came across GamePC's review of a BFG GeForce 6800 GT OC card. Most of you know that this GT is a full 16 pipeline GPU but, unlike the Ultras, the GT's core is clocked at 350 Mhz by default. But, BFG's GeForce 6800 GT OC is however clocked at 370 MHz out of the box but GamePC found out that BFG GT managed a healthy overclock to 400 MHZ core. That is the clock at which GeForce 6800 Ultra is set to run at by default! These GT cards are good value for money as they not only perform near to levels of the GeForce 6800 Ultra but also Radeon x800XT PE in some games. Once more you can overclock these GTs to Ultra levels and save yourself a bunch of money as the same time. So it's not a suprise that GamePC were mightly impressed with BFG's GeForce 6800 GT. Click on teh headline to read the review.

Basing the 6800 GT card on the same architecture as the high-end 6800 Ultra was the right thing to do in our mind, and we expect cards based on this GPU to be extremely popular due to this decision, especially if rival ATI continues to have supply issues with their X800 series. From our benchmarks, we’ve seen that the 6800 GT can easily put up numbers right on par with the Radeon X800 Pro series, and in many cases can compete directly with ATI’s top of the line X800 XT Platinum Edition cards. Not only is this impressive from a technological standpoint, but considering the 6800 GT runs for about $150 less than a Radeon X800 XT PE, we’d say the 6800 GT is a fairly good deal for a high-end card at this time (although it’s still an expensive beast).

PNY GeForce 6800 GT - 7/12/04 @ 3:56 am - By: MUYA - Source: E-mail
Gamers Depot reviews a retail PNY GeForce 6800 GT. The PNY still follows reference NVIDIA design and still has the single slot cooling design. The GT's certainly have a good price to performance ratio especially, at high resolutions with heavy antialiasing and anisotropic filtering enabled. It also seems GeForce 6800 GTs are more readily available than GeForce 6800 Ultras at this moment. Click on the headline to read the review.

BFG 6800 GT Review - 7/10/04 @ 6:27 am - By: MUYA - Source: Browsing
Neoseeker has a BFG GeForce 6800 GT OC review up. The GeForce 6800 GT has shown to be an enormous value when compared to GeForce 6800 Ultra or ATI Radeon XT PE because of its high value:performance ratio. Check the review out at Neoseeker.

The price of the BFG 6800 GT OC is agreeable also - with a MSRP of 399$, it is 100$ less than the Ultra and the X800 XT PE. The price is on part with the X800 Pro and in our benchmarking, the GT OC is right up there with the XT PE in most cases. Performance is still being eeked out by the Nvidia driver team with fairly big gains from the initial debut in April till now and more expected in the short term. In my opinion, the 6800 GT OC is the most attractive next generation card to get.

BFG 6800U OC Review - 7/06/04 @ 9:20 am - By: MUYA - Source: Browsing
HardOCP's Brent Justice has got his mits on a BFG GeForce 6800 Ultra OC for some benching goodness. It is compared against a Radeon x800 XT PE in retail games.

This particular BFG GeForce 6800 Ultra OC card comes overclocked straight out of the box, 25 MHz to be exact. However, the card is powered by NVIDIA's GeForce 6800 Ultra GPU that is matched with 256 MB GDDR memory and, the card has a lifetime warranty from BFG! Click on the headline to read the review.

What was most remarkable is how much the performance has improved with this new 61.34 driver we are testing with. Performance in FarCry is way up, and in Flight Sim 2004 the GeForce 6800Ultra is simply faster than the Radeon X800XT-PE. Things are starting to look up performance wise for the 6800Ultra if this driver version is any indication. As of writing this, we are now testing with v61.45 drivers and it looks as though there are going to be some performance advantages there as well.

Far Cry v1.2 & SM 3.0 - 7/03/04 @ 4:21 pm - By: MikeC - Source: HardOCP
Hot Hardware has posted their preview of the upcoming Shader Model 3.0 enabled patch for Far Cry. They test the performance of the version 1.2 patch, which is scheduled to be released on Monday, with a 3.2GHz Pentium 4 and a GeForce 6800 GT, GeForce 6800, and Radeon X800 Pro.

The FarCry v1.2 patch is somewhat of a milestone for NVIDIA. When DirectX 9.0c "ships", FarCry, when patched to v1.2, will be the first readily available game to take advantage of the GeForce 6 series Shader Model 3.0 capabilities. And although image quality is generally unaffected by the SM 3.0 in FarCry, the performance gains associated with using the SM 3.0 path are significant.

If the types of performance gains we've seen here today are typical, more game developers may begin to use SM 3.0 to give their projects a boost. If this happens quickly, NVIDIA's GeForce 6 series may overtake ATi's X800's in more and more games, putting NVIDIA in a much more comfortable position.

FarCry @ Anandtech - 7/02/04 @ 12:04 am - By: MaxPower - Source: AnandTech
The FarCry 1.2 will feature a new rendering path based on Shader Model 3.0 (Vertex and Pixel Shader 3.0), which is currently only supported by NVIDIA's 6800 series cards and not by ATI's X800 line of cards.

We are here today to test out the new patch on six different levels in FarCry and see if the new methods, which CryTek were able to include in their new path, offer any kind of advantage. As the game play experience is meant to be the same no matter what card we're using, we'll clear the air before we start, and say that there will be no new eye candy available through the SM3.0 path. The game should be rendered exactly the same way it was under SM2.0, and we will take a look at IQ as we go through our tests just to make sure that we keep on track. This is a very important point to take away as it means that regardless of whether you buy an ATI X800 or an NVIDIA 6800, the game will still look and play the same.
