Home Theater Tips - 7/31/07 @ 1:24 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
Loyd Case over at ExtremeTech has been attending THX's Level 1 and Level 2 training and tells us how he set up his home theater system. Definitely a good read for those of you considering a similar project.

Rather, this article deals more with the practicalities and specifics of setting up your home theater, using a real-world example: my home theater. Like most people, I can't afford to drop a quarter-million dollars or more for a dedicated home theater, so I'm stuck, both with the gear I can afford and an existing space.

Influential Products - 7/31/07 @ 12:27 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
Contrary to popular belief, life in the PC industry existed well before Microsoft became an entity. However, a majority of the participants in CompTIA's recent poll to name their industry's most influential products of all time may not have been around at that time. In fact, it's clear that they were not based on the top five responses.
  1. Internet Explorer
  2. Microsoft Word
  3. Windows 95
  4. iPOD
  5. Microsoft Excel
Barring the iPOD, there were a number of popular operating systems, word processing and spreadsheet programs that were on the market before MS-DOS existed. Here is one that you "old-timers" may even recognize.

Not to take credit away from Microsoft (and Internet Explorer), but many of the true pioneers in this industry existed well before Microsoft was around.

NVIDIA Closes Gap - 7/30/07 @ 2:26 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Forums
Nvidia Is Closing the Gap for the Number One Position in Graphics, AMD Loses Ground and Intel is Flat, Says Jon Peddie Research.

Overall Market Was up 3% Bucking Seasonal Trend.

TIBURON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the industry's leading research and consulting firm for graphics and multimedia, today announced estimated graphics shipments and supplier market share for the second calendar quarter of 2007. The results for the quarter results are available in the Q2 2007 edition of Jon Peddie's First Look, the firm's quarterly graphics survey. JPR's companion report, Market Watch, provides an in-depth look at the PC graphics market and includes unit shipment and segment market share data, trend analysis, shipment forecasts, and profiles of major suppliers.
Traditionally, the second quarter is slow for the computer industry. Nevertheless Q2'07 saw Nvidia make significant grains, while AMD and Intel saw more typical results for the time period. VIA saw a slight rise, SiS slipped more, and Matrox dropped too.

Total shipments for the quarter were 81.3 million units, up 3% in over last quarter. Compared to the same quarter last year shipments were up 8.2%.

On the desktop Nvidia was the clear winner, claiming 43% against Intel's 38.5%, while AMD had a modest gain to 23%

In the mobile market Intel held its dominant position and grew slightly to 51.5%, with Nvidia number two at 27% and AMD at 21%.

Mobile chips continued their growth to claim 31.2% of the market with 24.5 million units.

Visitor Statistics - 7/26/07 @ 11:10 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Log Files
Based on our web server log files, I accumulated the following statistics for the month of July. Although most visitors to nV News use a flavor of Windows for their operating system, we tend to be on the leading edge as a whopping 24.6% are using Windows Vista, which is significantly higher than the norm. The Linux, Unix, and Solaris communities are also represented as various support forums are hosted by nV News.

The browser wars continue as most visitors used various flavors of Internet Explorer, but Firefox continues to gain popularity.

Two New Products - 7/26/07 @ 9:23 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
I recently purchased a couple of new products that are worth mentioning and plan to install them this coming weekend. The first product is one of the latest Core 2 Duo processors from Intel - the E6850 model, which has two cores running at 3.0GHZ and a FSB speed of 1333MHz.

Some of NVIDIA's motherboard partners such as BFG, EVGA, and XFX have also released a P30 BIOS for the nForce 680i chipset, which features better overclocking support for the 1333 MHz processors.

The second product, which I have already installed and been testing, is the Sapphire HD 2900 XT graphics card.

I'll be putting the graphics card through our grueling game performance testbed similar to the series of games we used in our review of the XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra XXX Edition.

I am also working on a couple of new projects, one of which will enlist the services of readers like yourself. When the project is formally introduced, your assistance will end up providing valuable information that is almost always missing from graphics card reviews. Best of all, the work will be fun and those who participate will be eligible to win prizes.

Laptop Runs Crysis - 7/23/07 @ 1:52 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
Laptops outfitted with NVIDIA based GPUs provide the best in 3D graphics performance and the trend continues with the latest Toshiba Satellite notebook and the DirectX 10-capable GeForce 8700M GT.

Here's a snippet from the article:

This is what PC gaming has been waiting for. Running on a high-powered Toshiba Satellite notebook packing a brand new DirectX 10-capable nVidia GeForce 8700M GT card, it can only be said that Crysis looked no less than stunning. The top shelf graphics accelerator had no issue churning out the visuals and handling the game's physics; amazingly enough, all from a notebook. That alone makes Crysis, as well as nVidia's new cards, worthy of anticipation.

BioShock News - 7/18/07 @ 10:39 am - By: MikeC - Source: Forums
In addition to Enemy Territory Quake Wars, I am personally looking forward to the upcoming release of BioShock. In-game footage was shown by G4 as they covered E3 last week and the highly regarded CliffyB praised the title calling the games’ atmosphere second to none (see link on right side bar under Favorite Stories).

Ken Levine, who is a founding member and lead designer at Irrational Games, has gone on record by stating the BioShock will offer unprecedented interactivity.

The system specifications for BioShock were published during E3 with a recommended system consisting of a Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, and a DirectX 9.0c compliant card with 512MB RAM (GeForce 7900GT or better) or DirectX 10 compliant card (GeForce 8600 or better).

From time to time I get questions from students, or see postings on the Internet from newbie developers, demanding to know why they should write design documents. They want to dive straight in and get modeling or coding, and they see the paperwork as a waste of time. The player will never see it, so why take the trouble to write it?

MSI 8500/8600 GT - 7/12/07 @ 7:54 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Jonathan Martini checks out MSI's GeForce 8500 GT and GeForce 8600 GT OC graphics cards. The GeForce 8500 GT falls in the $75-$80 range, while the overclocked 8600 GT runs around $115.

Based on a price-performance ratio, the results show the GeForce 8600 GT OC outperforming the GeForce 8500 GT over 2x at higher resolutions like 1600x1200, shader intensive games like F.E.A.R., or with 2x and 4x antialiasing enabled.

While MSI's GeForce 8500 GT (NX8500GT-TD256E) is capable of handling the workload of the typical user and the odd game, the more powerful MSI GeForce 8600 GT OC provides twice the gaming performance in almost every gaming scenario tested. For only a twenty to forty dollar premium, anyone in the market for a low-priced mainstream video card and interested in gaming should definitely opt for the 8600 GT OC.

E3 2007 Analysis - 7/12/07 @ 7:51 am - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
Chris Kohler of Wired magazine does an analysis of E3 in his blog today.

Analysis: E3 Conferences and the Status Quo

Nothing really happened at this year's E3. Probably because, as we've been saying ad nauseum, this isn't really E3 at all. We weren't really sure what it was going to be, but as it turns out it's a bunch of "Gamer's Day" events that run for three days in a city full of hotels, all simultaneously.

Yes, there were press conferences. But when Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony all decide to only show their 2007 games (for the most part) and hold back on announcing huge news (entirely), you know something's up with the venue. At any rate, gamers hoping for some kind of shift in momentum, no matter which direction, didn't get their wish. This year's E3 is all about maintaining the status quo.

Fraps And DirectX 10 - 7/10/07 @ 7:09 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
Fraps 2.9 was released today, which adds support for Vista and DirectX 10 games.

With games starting to appear using DirectX 10 graphics we are happy to report that benchmarking, video capture, and screenshots are now all fully supported for these titles.

Vista also includes a rewritten audio subsystem. Fraps can take advantage of this and directly record a sound stream from the machine without requiring any support from the soundcard driver. This allows you to capture ingame audio even if you are using a USB headset or other audio device which does not normally support a "Stereo Mix" or "What U Hear" recording input.

Since the Vista Desktop Window Manager (DWM) runs through DirectX we have also added a new option to monitor the desktop under Vista. You can now take screenshots and record video from the desktop just like any other game or 3D application.

Dave Orton Resigns - 7/10/07 @ 8:30 am - By: MikeC - Source: Forums
AMD Announces the Resignation of Dave Orton, former CEO of ATI

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- July 10, 2007 --AMD (NYSE:AMD) announced today that Dave Orton, former president and chief executive officer of ATI Technologies, has resigned as executive vice president of AMD, effective the end of July, 2007.

"Dave's passion and relentless drive catapulted ATI into a solid leadership position in each of the company’s graphics, chipset and consumer electronics businesses," said Dirk Meyer, AMD president and chief operating officer. "More recently, Dave was one of the key drivers in the successful integration of AMD and ATI. With his integration work complete and the successful launch of key graphics and chipset products earlier this year, the time was right for Dave to take his personal and professional life in a different direction."

"It is with mixed feelings that I am leaving AMD," said Orton. "I am very optimistic about AMD’s future. I believe strongly in the strategies that brought AMD and ATI together and the talented employees of the 'new AMD' who are committed to winning in the market by delivering the best possible solutions for customers."

QuakeCon 2007 - 7/05/07 @ 2:22 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Developer Blog
Great news to hear that NVIDIA will be sponsoring QuakeCon 2007, which will feature a Championship Tournament purse of $100,000. The event will take place at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas from August 2-5 and is expected to drawn 6,000 gamers from around the world.

The first sanctioned tournament of id Software’s Enemy Territory: Quake Wars will be taking place along with the first ever "Quad Damage" tournament, which will span all four Quake games.

"For over 10 years gamers have debated who the best overall Quake player is, and this year we’re giving our competitors the chance to stake that claim in our world exclusive Quad Damage tournament," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "We’re also giving teams the chance to be crowned the first ever Enemy Territory: Quake Wars champions, and thanks to NVIDIA’s $100,000 total prize purse, the competition will be more intense than ever."

Virtual Economy - 7/05/07 @ 2:17 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
No doubt that popular on-line games like Everquest and World of Warcraft have led to a robust virtual economy that some gamers are profiting from. For example, 10,000 gold in EverQuest II can be bought for $150 dollars while raising a level one character to level 70 in World of Warcraft costs around $450.

The leading exporter of this service is China, where an estimated 500,000 to 1,000,000 people are working for "gold-farming" factories. The Chinese government is hesitant to endorse this type of service and even imposed an "indulgence prevention" program to limit those under 18 years of age to five hours of farming.

China, with its cheap labour and low operational costs, has become a hub of such gold farms that export the online credits to South Korea, the United States and other developed nations. IGE, the largest online seller of virtual goods in the United States, has set up an office in Shanghai to collect virtual currency and assets from more than 1,000 Chinese suppliers and sell them to American players at fat prices.

The Info Tech 100 - 7/05/07 @ 2:13 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
A couple of days ago BusinessWeek released their Information Technology 100 for 2007 - a performance ranking of IT companies based on factors such as growth, revenue, and profits.

Amazon.com grabbed the top spot, while lesser known organizations América Móvil, Telefonica, Hon Hai Precision and Telenor held spots 2 through 5. América Móvil is a wireless operator in Latin America owned by one of the world's richest men while Hon Hai Precision is the world's top electronics manufacturer with $40 billion in annual sales.

ASUSTeK was ranked 29th and NVIDIA 36th.

Dell, Motorola, and SAP, which is being sued by Oracle, were some of the big names that were missing.
