| Phenom vs Core 2 - 7/24/08 @ 9:25 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A |
| I'm currently wrapping up a review of the Asus M3N78 Pro motherboard, which supports AMD processors and is based on NVIDIA's GeForce 8300 chipset. An impressive motherboard for the price, but I was startled at how under-powered the Phenom processor is in its ability to keep NVIDIA's flagship GeForce GTX 280 GPU occupied in a leading-edge title like Crysis.
I wanted to share this information with our readers since I don't recall seeing any GeForce GTX 280 reviews using a Phenom processor. However, I was able to verify my results based on a Phenom review at bit-tech.net, which made use of a GeForce 8800 Ultra. To add insult to injury, the Core 2 Duo E8500 ($190) is actually cheaper than the Phenom 9850 X4 ($205) at Newegg. |
| Question & Answer - 7/23/08 @ 10:38 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A |
| Question: What product is almost dropping faster in price than a share of NVIDIA common stock? Answer: A graphics card based on their flagship GeForce GTX 280 GPU, which debuted on June 16th with a MSRP of $649. This morning SteveC located a deal at Buy.com, which is selling the PNY GeForce GTX 280 for $389 after a $30 rebate (expires on July 24th). That turns out to be a drop of 40%. On June 16th, a share of NVIDIA stock was selling for $21.02. Today, a share is going for $11.72, which is a 44% decrease. If AMD's stock drops to $0 per share, maybe we'll start seeing free graphics cards from them Note: You must click on the Buy.com link on the PriceGrabber feed page in order to view the actual price. |

| The Party Is Over - 7/07/08 @ 6:52 am - By: MikeC - Source: N/A |
| A couple of weeks ago I made a news post entitled "It's A Party" as I was looking forward to upgrading my PC. Two weeks later, the party is over (for now) as the assembled system was not suitable for use due to instability, crashes, and lockups. Unfortunately, this exercise resulted in many hours of lost productivity, but that's the way it goes sometimes with a failed upgrade. Although the nForce 790i/DDR3 platform turned out to be quite a performer at lower resolutions, I've returned to using an nForce 680i/DDR2 based system. I was able to run a few Crysis benchmarks, which demonstrates the additional performance the nForce 790i/DDR3 platform is capable of delivering at lower resolutions. The following results are from a Core 2 Duo E8500 and GeForce GTX 280 under Windows XP with Service Pack 3. Crysis was run at high settings with high quality 8x anisotropic filtering and no antialiasing. The resolution tested, along with the average and minimum frame rates from the 790i/DDR3 vs. the 680i/DDR2, are provided. 1280x800 - 70,32 vs. 63,27 |
