IDF 2005 Memory News - 8/31/05 @ 3:30 pm - By: MaxPower - Source: Email
Last week some of the guys at Legit Reviews got to stop by the booths of the two leading North American enthusiast companies and took a look at their product lines. They were able to look at Kingston's engineering samples of DDR2 800MHz ValueRAM and take some Corsair XPERT modules out for a test drive.

On display in the Lubic Case was a pre-production sample of Kingston's HyperX DDR2 1000MHz memory. This memory is so new that it isn't yet on the Kingston site and this is the first time we have seen Kingston using it. The memory was clocked at 1GHz with 5-5-5 timings while the test systems Intel 840 processor was overclocked to ~4GHz with the aid of water cooling.

Chicago (IL) - A cross-licensing agreement with Nvidia is beginning to kick in for Intel. The company plans to introduce a new high-end version of the 955X chipset which will enable users to run two Nvidia or ATI graphics cards in tandem.

Razer Copperhead - 8/31/05 @ 1:29 pm - By: MaxPower - Source: Gamespot Hardware
Gamespot has a review of the soon-to-be-released Razer Copperhead. I absolutely love my Razer Diamondback and wouldn't trade it for anything...except for this.

The Copperhead doesn't come cheaply, but it's the first mouse that features 2,000dpi support, a 1,000Hz USB poll rate, and built-in memory for the best gaming performance around.

As an aside, Microsoft looks to be jumping into the gaming mouse pool now.

Dual BIOS 6600GT - 8/31/05 @ 9:26 am - By: MaxPower - Source: Email
Guru3D takes a look at an interesting new set of features from Galaxy, which involve a series of products with a switchable BIOS and a buzzer alarm.

So specifically on this Galaxy model I can say, the Zalman copper cooler looks and works fantastic, its noise level is low in IDLE though the temperature already is 45 Degrees C. At high-performance the card remains under 60 Degrees C, which is good. The card although based on reference design has it's own touch and feel. The blue PCB, the copper cooling, something I applaud very much. The new Dual BIOS functionality. In retrospect I must say I really do like the idea of the Dual BIOS functionality of this graphics card.

Nanotech and Glass - 8/30/05 @ 2:55 pm - By: MaxPower - Source: browsing
This story was mentioned in our forums earlier but I thought it was worthy of a front page news post. It's promising to see how nanotech is apparently being applied rather quickly in a variety of areas.

I put a Konfabulator widget together last night that will pull down the 10 most recent posts on the forums here. It auto-refreshes every 60 seconds. This is based on the Digg Digger and PHP Freaks widgets.

I'd like to add some preferences to this that will allow you to adjust the auto-refresh duration, maybe pick certain forums to watch instead of just top 10 overall, change color scheme, etc.

For now though, this is just pulling in the top 10 just as if you'd clicked on the "New Posts" link.

Let me know what you think. If you don't know where to start then head here first: http://www.konfabulator.com

EVGA Mainboard - 8/23/05 @ 8:48 am - By: MaxPower - Source: nV News
Steve Angelly has finished his review of an EVGA nForce4 SLI motherboard.
EVGA 133-K8-NF41-AX MOTHERBOARD
The motherboard looks to be in the basic configuration and closely follows reference design except for one rather unique feature that I have seen only offered by one other board. This board has an extra PCI-Express (E) full-length slot making a total of 3 available. The two yellow full-length slots are x8 PCI-E for installing cards and activating SLI. The blue full-length slot is x16 PCI-E for use with a single PCI-E card. This method of enabling SLI is unlike most other SLI-capable boards which use jumpers or switching cards.

GF 7800 GTX & GT - 8/23/05 @ 8:02 am - By: MUYA - Source: Various
Bradon from FiringSquad takes a look at the EVGA e-GeForce 7800 GTX KO ACS'. One of the first cards to offer a different HS/F from NVIDIA's reference model. It's a tad different, but incorporates a copper HS/F instead of the aluminum HS/F used in other graphics cards. This helps EVGA clock their e-GeForce 7800 GTX card at 490MHz core and 1.3GHz memory. That's an additional 12% in fill-rate and extra 3 GB/sec in memory bandwidth that can be put to good use.

Continuing with the EVGA theme, Techage reviews a EVGA e_GeForce 7800 GT. They manage 12 pages of benchmarks and a decent overclock and conclude that they do indeed do love their new toy.

GT Reviews - 8/22/05 @ 8:25 am - By: MUYA - Source: Various
Beyond3D gets the ball rolling today with a BFG Tech GeForce 7800 GT OC Review, powered by a GeForce 7800 GT GPU, this 5 quad block GPU with 7 vertex shaders which continues to show it's muscles against its bigger brother the GeForce 7800 GTX.

GamePC also checks out retail cards of the GeForce 7800 GT from ASUS and eVGA both in SLI modes too. The important numbers seem to indicate that even at high resolution and with high degree of AA and AF enabled, the GT SLI can certainly keep up with the GTX SLI setup.

512MB FX 4500 - 8/21/05 @ 2:39 am - By: MUYA - Source:
The mad professor at 3dprofessor has gotten hold of a spankingly powerful 512MB QUADRO FX 4500, a GL version of 7800 GTX GPU. The HSF is beefy, quad heat piped and dual slotted and probably needed for the extra heat the extra 256MB memory modules generate. Brian puts the new Quadro on an AMD and Intel dual core system and compiles results with a few industry standard benchmarks. Check it out by clicking the headline.

Intel Chipset Shortage - 8/20/05 @ 10:31 am - By: HalcYoN - Source: Email

The rising demand is expected to contribute an additional one million graphics card shipments to the industry every month in the second half of this year, Sun said.

More G70 Shimmering - 8/20/05 @ 10:12 am - By: HalcYoN - Source: Email
3DCenter has posted an English version of their article concerning texture shimmering on the G70, a problem first noted at nV News in this post by Clay.  3DCenter has harsh criticism of both NVIDIA and ATI for AF optimizations made over the last two generations, though even more scathing words are directed at NVIDIA for the amount of shimmering found in certain situations with the 7800GTX due to the driver bug.

MikeC: NVIDIA is currently working on two issues that affect image quality. One is with the application profile system. The driver image setting, which controls the level of texture filtering optimizations, is not functioning properly as the global image setting is overriding the application profile image setting. When working correctly, the application profile should ALWAYS override the global setting.

For example, if the image setting in your Half-Life 2 profile was set to high quality and the global image setting was set to quality, then Half-Life 2 would be running with a quality image setting.

The application profile problem is mentioned in the 77.77 Driver Release Notes along with a workaround.

Note: Anisotropic optimizations are not implemented for OpenGL applications in the current Release 75 driver.

The texture shimmering problem is a separate issue, which we have been investigating and previously reported to NVIDIA. It is possible that the application profile bug could also have an effect on the texture shimmering problem.

As far was we know, NVIDIA still maintains that the high quality image setting contains no texture filtering optimizations. However, with the previously mentioned problems, it would not be prudent to conduct any type of verification at this time.

Moderated discussion here.

7800 Series News - 8/20/05 @ 9:57 am - By: HalcYoN - Source: Browsing
The Squab checks out the MSI NC7800GTX. . They check out two, in fact.

To help separate their NX7800GTX from other cards, MSI also bundles a copy of their Dynamic Overclocking Technology Express, also known as D.O.T. Express. As its name implies, D.O.T. can be used to dynamically overclock your NX7800GTX graphics card to one of six predetermined settings depending on temperature. The slowest setting, Private, overclocks your card 2%. The five other settings are Sergeant (4%), Captain (6%), Colonel (8%) General (9%) and Commander (10%).

Next up, Overclockers New Zealand started a 7800GTX round-up using G70 based cards from Leadtek, Gigabyte and Galaxy.  More cards will be added but here is an interesting snip from the first round.

Currently, there are two revisions of 7800GTX on the market, Rev W and Rev U. You can find the revision number on the sticker on the upper left hand side. We found that in general, Rev W boards have better chances of getting a higher overclocking.

Finally, GamePC compares two of the more popular 7800GT offerings from Asus and EVGA.  Each card has strengths and weaknesses, but one thing is for sure; GamePC likes the 7800GT.

With the release of the GeForce 7800 GT, one shouldn’t even consider a GeForce 6800 GT or Ultra card, as the 7800 GT is so close in terms of price, but performs far better and is much better in the heat / power / noise department as well. Frankly, we would prefer a 7800 GT card compared to anything which ATI has on the market we well - there's just no reason to buy a high-end Radeon card for gaming at this point, considering the 7800 GT has better single card performance and has the ability to run in SLI mode.

Abit SLI Reviews - 8/20/05 @ 9:43 am - By: HalcYoN - Source: Browsing
PC Stats reviews the AN8-SLI nForce4-SLI motherboard.  The motherboard sports a heatpipe chipset cooler and AC97 I/O sound card, the A8N-SLI is a solid all-around bundle.

PC Perspective checks out the gamer-oriented version, Abit Fatal1ty AN8-SLI.  Noise levels are sacrificed for ultimate performance as the nForce4 chipset is actively cooled with a Vantec-style chipset cooler.  The chipset isn't the only component benefiting from active cooling as Abit adds small fans to draw airflow across the motherboard's power management hoping to increase overclocking capabilities.

Asus PEG Link Mode - 8/18/05 @ 1:57 pm - By: HalcYoN - Source: Email
ARP has posted the ASUS PEG Link Mode Guide.  In it, they test each of the available modes on a 6800 Ultra and ATI X300.

Judging by the scores of the X300, the budget level cards such as the GeForce 6200 will benefit from the performance oriented settings far more than cards with larger amounts of on-card memory.

Video Card Reviews - 8/18/05 @ 1:46 pm - By: HalcYoN - Source: Email
Harwdare Zone revewis the ASUS Extreme N7800 GTX TOP, which features HSF unit by Artic Cooling .

As the latest in ASUS' line of factory overclocked performance edition (hence the TOP name, which means Top Overclocking Performance), the ASUS Extreme N7800 GTX TOP has quite a task to match the standards set by the previous TOP cards. ASUS claims to select only the best performing graphics processing unit (GPUs) capable of handling the stresses of overclocking for these cards. Together with the fastest memory chips and a customized cooling solution, the TOP edition is the fastest graphics card produced by ASUS for any particular GPU. Add that to the solid reputation ASUS has built up over the years with both enthusiasts and mainstream consumers alike and that says a lot of the TOP series. So does the ASUS Extreme N7800 GTX TOP truly lives up to its status? Read on as we reveal to you if this card is as good as its specifications suggest.

CoolTechZone checks out the AOpen 6600GT.

We’ve already introduced the 6600GT previously, so for now, we’ll skip the introduction and get straight to the actual product. Although it’s a minor thing in the grand scheme of features, the black PCB color and orange copper actually make this card attractive than standard versions we see from manufacturers these days. The heatsink and fan combination are a needed accessory to dissipate heat off of the modern GPUs. Not too impressively, the combo isn’t the quietest in the market. Even though we have seen slightly better cards noise wise, the difference between the loudest fans and the quietest ones isn’t all that much unless you are comparing a passively cooled heatsink to a bold design such as the ones from HIS. With that said, AOpen does offer something special that other companies tend to ignore on midrange adapters: RAMsinks. Throughout our testing, we’ve found the RAMsinks to be of little help in the overclocking department, but if the company can implement them without adding onto the cost, there’s nothing to complain about. The RAMsinks as well as the heatsink and fan combo performed rather well, as you’ll later find out in the evaluation.

GTX and GT Reviews - 8/17/05 @ 11:28 am - By: MUYA - Source: Various
A whole gaggle of GeForce 7800 GTX/GT reviews for you folks out on the market to buy a new graphics card for you today. Anandtech starts with a XFX GeForce 7800 GTX Overclocked investigation. Considering the reference based HSF, Anandtech did manage to get their XFX 7800 GTX to 500 MHZ core and 1.3 Ghz memory

GDHardware then takes two MSI GeForce 7800 GTX cards for an SLI adventure. 7800 GTX SLI is presently the bee knees in terms of high end gaming perhaps limited by CPU but, if you have the money for it, take the plunge and you won't (like me) regret it.

PC perspective has an exclusive of sorts Asus N7800 GTX TOP review. The fist GeForce 7800 GTX based card with a different HSF. The HSF is actually an Artic Cooling NV5 type and because of this, the card comes clocked at 486MHz core and 1.35GHz memory. The only downside is that the cooling solution does take up 2 slots.

Digit-life does some GTX to GT invetigation with a Leadtek 7800 GTX for those that are interested to see the difference.

Last but not least, Extrememtech reviews a XFX GeForce 7800 GT card. A retail card based on a recently released 7800 GT GPU which certainly looks value for money in terms of cost per performance ratio. The GT keeps up with the GTX which has beefier HSF and 1 extra quad block and 1 vertex shading unit.

BFG 7800 GTX OC - 8/15/05 @ 6:07 pm - By: MaxPower - Source: nV News
My review of the BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OC card is ready to roll. I really try to bring something unique to all of my reviews and this one is no different. I wrote a tool that you can use to compare various IQ screenshots via just your web browser. Many of you know how to do this with any number of graphics editing apps but there are many people that do not. So, I hope this is of some benefit to some of you.

I concentrated on the F.E.A.R. demo as it is a very stressful game for even the hefty 7800 GTX. I also give my impressions of the Dungeon Siege II demo.

7800GT Reviews - 8/14/05 @ 10:41 am - By: HalcYoN - Source: Browsing
The Adrenaline Vault takes a look at the XFX 7800GT.

The XFX 7800 GT is a strong performer in all tests and I would be proud to have one in my gaming rig. Looking at the results XFX has made a really good card and it was a wise decision to clock their card to 450/1.05. That factory overclock is going to make even the biggest enthusiast ponder which card to get for his box.

GamerGod.com reviews the eVGA 7800GT.

7800GTX works on 24 Pixel Pipeline and 8 Vertex Shader units while the 7800GT works on 20 Pixel Pipeline and 7 Vertex Shader Units. Obviously the card is inferior to 7800GTX but the price difference is worth considering. The 7800GTX currently costs around $542.00 and the 7800GT around $449.99, $100 difference between their prices. The 7800GTX is truly a beast but 7800GT provides great performance/price ratio to those who are neck to neck with their budget.

Digit Life checks out the Palit GeForce 7800 GT 256MB.

Palit GeForce 7800 GT 256MB is a very interesting product. The card demonstrated excellent performance results, having outscored even the more expensive RADEON X850 XT PE, to say nothing of the GeForce 6800 Ultra and X850 XT. I guess there is no need in extra dithyrambs, our readers have seen that this card is well worth its price anyway; besides, the price drop is over the horizon.

Forum Update - 8/13/05 @ 9:51 am - By: HalcYoN - Source: You
I have been away from the news desk for a little over a week because my wife broke her ankle and shattered the bone at the top of her foot.  Good times.  I have been able to spare a little time to troll the forums, so I thought I would go ahead and bring you a Forum Update.

The What song are you listening to? thread continues to be updated.  We are up to 104 pages, thanks in some part to superkyle's never-ending NiN playlist.  Other songs recently posted have been by artists ranging from Aretha Franklin to Pantera.

OWA posted some Shuttle Launch Pics.  See if you can help to identify the photographer as one shot in particular makes a fantastic desktop wallpaper.

Obviously, MikeC's NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT quick look has been a popular thread for Q&A on the latest GPU from NVIDIA.  Given a little over a day to preview the card, the forum post is the prelude to a full review Mike is working up as soon as he finishes the current project involving a pair of very fast video cards.

As soon as the 7800GTX was announced and, subsequently was available for purchase, the quest for even higher overclocking results began.  ozziegn asks of 7800GTX owners, Have you replaced your stock cooler yet?  The thread includes pics of the 7800GTX with a Zalman ZF-700Cu installed.

macatak started the Win32-Forceware 77.77 (WHQL) support thread.  Some users are still experiencing Gamma and Overlay issues.  Others are still waiting for the fabled Release 80 Forcewares.

One of my favorite forums to click through is the Hardware Rumor Mill.  Could NVIDIA be introducing a Physics Graphics Card with the next generation GPU?  Certainly a possibility.  Are the R520, R520 GL, RV515 XT and RV530 XT ready for production?

There are a few QuakeCon 05 related threads running in the Gaming Central Forum.  DMA started a general catch-all thread here that includes links to event pics, screenshots and movies.  There is also Teh Carmack Speaks!!, a thread related to comments from an AMDZone interview where Carmack makes some pretty interesting comments regarding Physics processors.

The reference card arrived on Tuesday.

GF 7800 GT Debuts - 8/11/05 @ 7:33 am - By: MUYA - Source: Various
With Leadtek and Elsa jumping the gun with introductions of their cards based on the not so secret GeForce 7800 GT based GPU, we will start linking all GeForce 7800 GT GPU based card reviews from around the web.

A bit about the new card as the GeForce 7800 GT is a 5 quad GPU with 7 vertex shading units clocked at 400MHz and paired with 256MB of memory running at 1GHz. It seems with current CPU limitations the GT is every bit as good as the GTX! There is more good news as the GeForce 7800 GT is available as of launch!

Debuts and SLI - 8/09/05 @ 7:00 am - By: MUYA - Source: Various
Hot on the announcement by NVIDIA of new AMD and Intel platform chipsets, the nForce4 SLI X16, the newest chipset from NVIDIA to incorporate dual 16X PCIe graphics ports, Anandtech has an exclusive information on the new nForce4 X16 chipset

Suprising with the release of NVIDIA's new nForce4 SLI X16 chipset, comes a review from Extremetech of a Dell XPS 600 which incorporates nForce4 Intel SLI X16 chipset and 2 GeForce 7800 GTX cards with dual slot cooling solutions.

Anandtech then reviews a eVGA GeForce 7800GTX with eVGA's new AC3 cooling system which they promise will help deliver a better overclocking experience. Anandtech got their card to run at 500 MHz core and 1.35 Ghz!

A Gainward Ultra/3500PCX Golden Sample card falls onto the grubby mitts of the guys over at bit-tech. This card comes factory overclocked at 470MHz for the core and the memory is clocked at 1.3 GHz matching eVGA's GTX KO specs! They employ the newly released single player demo of F.E.A.R along with a host of other games to gauge the performance of this card which, doesn't disappoint.

PC Impact from France on the other has a Gigabyte 3D1 - 68GT dual GeForce 6800 GT GPU card to play around with. The Core and memory clocks are also set a little higher than reference 6800 GT clocks at 370 MHz and 1.1 GHz. Cost aside, this card does manager to give a 7800 GTX a run for its money on most games not suprisingly since, theoretically, the 3D1-68GT has 32 fragment pipelines, and 12 vertex shading units between the pair of the GPUs and this card is probably for collectors as it costs a cool €700!

MSI 7800 SLI Review - 8/07/05 @ 10:00 am - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
HardOCP's Brent Justice published an SLI review of the MSI NX7800 GTX a couple of days ago. "Playable" gameplay performance results are compared to the GeForce 6800 Ultra SLI and Radeon X850XT-PE in a number of popular games including Doom 3, Half-Life 2, Battlefield 2 and World of Warcraft.

The MSI NX7800 GTX video card is a very strong performer in games. We just can’t get over the level of game play the new GeForce 7800 GTX allows. This is how gaming should be. In DOOM 3, even with just a single MSI NX7800 GTX, we were playing smoothly at 1600x1200 with 4X Transparency Multisample Anti-Aliasing. It seems one card does the job just fine, but if you put two cards in for SLI, you’ll get a large performance boost allowing Transparency Supersampling and incredibly high frame rates.

MikeC: I've spent the past few weeks evaluating MSI's NX7800 GTX running in an SLI configuration. Image quality and performance are incredible. A top-of-the-line processor is essential in order to maximize the performance of the GeForce 7800 GTX. I would also recommend a 21-inch or higher monitor since many games are playable at resolutions of 1920x1440 and 2048x1536.

For example, a run through of the canal level in Half-Life 2 with an Athlon 64 4000+ yielded 57.3 fps at a resolution of 2048x1536 with 4X AA, 8X AF, Gamma Correct AA and Supersampling Transparency AA under a High Quality image setting! Wow!

F.E.A.R Tweak Guide - 8/07/05 @ 9:19 am - By: MikeC - Source: F.E.A.R Feedback Thread
Koroush Ghazi of TweakGuides.com has put together a brief tweak guide for the F.E.A.R demo. The guide covers configuration files along with in-game sound and graphics options including a glitch with enabling antialiasing.

Importantly, there appears to be a bug with FSAA in the FEAR Demo. Firstly, you should make sure that you set the FSAA level in the in-game options, and set Antialiasing in your graphics card's control panel to 'Application Preference'. Secondly, your FSAA setting may not 'stick' after you adjust it and quit - you may need to go back into your options and cycle through the FSAA level (i.e. set it Off then back to your desired level) for it to be actually implemented each time you play.

If you see visible jaggedness on your screen AA is not being implemented - go back into your settings and reset it to your desired level, then go back into the game and it should be implemented. The difference is noticeable (as is the slowdown).

GTX Reviews - 8/03/05 @ 9:57 am - By: MUYA - Source: Browsing
Hexus starts todays roundup of GeForce 7800 GTX GOU based cards with a shootout of 7800 GTX based cards from, BFG Tech, Leadtek and XFX. All are reference based in designed except with respect to the clocks they are shipped at with XFX versions being clocked at 490MHZ core, BFG's at 470MHz and Leadteks at 430MHz. As expected they perform very well indeed in Hexus bench suite with 4XAA and 16XAF applied with the XFX coming out on top dues to its fairly hefty default overclock.

Trusted Reviews plays with a pair of Aeolus GeForce 7800 GTX cards for some sweet SLI action! And sweet it is as their benches proved even at resolutions of 1600 by 1200..and even at 2048 by 1536.

GF 7800 GTX & SLI - 8/01/05 @ 7:59 am - By: MUYA - Source: Browsing
VR-Zone investigates SLI on a pair Leadtek PX7800 GTX cards. *Same cards as mine!* They show some benches with SLI AA, the newly launched AA modes as well as the old AA modes in comparision to 6800 Ultra SLI setup. The bundle with these Leadtek PX7800 GTX is also great with Splinter Cell - Chaos Theory and Prince of Persia - Warrior Within. Just check out their overclocking results out!

No doubt, Leadtek Winfast PX7800 is one of the fastest graphics card in the market with its higher core and memory clocks. We have managed to overclock the card to 500MHz core and 1440Mhz memory and with a FX-57 running at 2.97GHz, we got a score of 13899!

Tweaktown on the other hand reviews a BFG Tech GeForce 7800 GTX OC. This card also comes pre-overclocked and life time waranty!

The BFG Tech is an absolute weapon of a graphics card. It does what everyone wants; it makes the fastest available graphics card even faster.
