MSI NX7950GX2 - 8/31/06 @ 9:03 am - By: MUYA - Source: N/A
Steve Angelly has completed his review of the MSI NX7950GX2 graphics card. Based on NVIDIA's GeForce 7950 GX2 GPU, Steve pairs the NX7950GX2 with his mid-range system and checks out performance in Far Cry, Doom 3, F.E.A.R. and Oblivion.

Here's a bit from the 3DMark05 results, which pretty much sums up the type of performance that the NX7950GX2 can offer.

You begin to appreciate the sheer power of the NX7950GX2 as doubling the resolution from 1024x768 to 2048x1536, with 4X antialiasing, only resulted in a 34.5% decrease in the overall 3DMark05 score.

Core 2 Extreme X6800 - 8/29/06 @ 10:51 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
GamePC posts a review of Intel's Core 2 Extreme X6800. While admitting it is the fastest processor, they didn't seem to think the retail price was justified.

For the dramatic price premium which Intel is charging for these models, we would have really liked to see a larger performance gap over the Core 2 Duo processor lineup, or a “unique” technology to help justify the cost. As of now, the Core 2 Extreme X6800 is 10% higher clocked and performs roughly 10% better compared to the E6700, but costs nearly 100% more. No matter how great the performance for the X6800 is, it’s hard to justify that kind of dramatic price increase for such a small boost in clock speed. Nevertheless, if you want the best performance on the market, this is the product you’ll want to buy.

Super Talent DDR2 - 8/16/06 @ 8:17 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Kyle Kerley has an updated rig that features 2GB of Super Talent's 800MHz DDR2 memory. This is the same memory that powered the high-end NVIDIA system in our GPU World Tour article.

This review covers Super Talent's 1GBx2 dual channel 800MHz DDR2 memory kit, part number T800UX2GC4, which was used in building an Athlon 64 4600+ AM2 system. Featuring super-low latencies of CL 4-4-3-8 (CAS, tRCD, tRP, tRAS respectively), this "over-clocked memory for gaming enthusiasts" has some of the tightest DDR2 timings in the market.

OpenGL on Vista - 8/11/06 @ 9:05 am - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
A little over a year ago, a plea was posted at OpenGL.org to ensure that OpenGL remains a first class API under Microsoft's upcoming Windows Vista operating system.

Microsoft is improving the user experience in Windows Vista with their Aero technology. With a DirectX 9 compliant graphics card, users will be able to turn on Aero Glass, which makes use of the hardware-accelerated features of the graphics card to produce special 3D effects on the desktop.

At that time, Microsoft had planned on using its Direct3D API to drive OpenGL when Aero Glass was being used. Unfortunately, this solution would have crippled the performance of OpenGL applications...

This is indeed good news as gamers will be able to enjoy the new features of Aero Glass and continue to enjoy playing the great 3D games that are developed using OpenGL!

Core 2 Duo E6600 - 8/11/06 @ 7:04 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
GamePC takes a look at Intel's Core 2 Duo E6600 processor. The E6600 is the most eagerly anticipated Core 2 model to date and boasts excellent stock performance, low power consumption, and high overclockability. Performance is compared to AMD’s best dual-core Socket-AM2 processors.

Of the five Core 2 models that were announced by Intel last month, without a doubt it has been the Core 2 Duo E6600 model which has garnered the most attention from the enthusiast community. While it may seem strange that the mid-range model is the most sought-after of this new processor lineup, when you look at the chip's feature set and pricing, it's really quite obvious that the Core 2 Duo E6600 simply gives the best bang for the buck on the market today.

AMD Drops ATI Brand - 8/07/06 @ 6:53 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Forums
Ben Hardwidge from PCPro reports that AMD is to drop the ATI brand.

"Chip guru AMD has announced that it's going to drop the ATi brand name following its takeover of the Canadian graphics underdog. Gareth Cater from AMD told Custom PC that 'the new company will be called AMD,' meaning that we could shortly be seeing AMD-branded Radeon graphics chips.

We asked Richard Baker from AMD if this meant that the memorable Radeon name would also be biting the dust, but he replied that 'we haven't made any final decisions yet, but I'd personally be very surprised if we dropped any of those product names. The ATi company name is definitely going, though.'

Baker stressed that, contrary to what's been reported in the press elsewhere, the acquisition will be a takeover rather than a merger, which means that AMD is going to be wearing the trousers in its relationship. Baker said that 'the company is being bought, so it's fairly standard that the name should go, as it's becoming a part of AMD.'

Chris Hook from ATi shrugged off the move, saying that 'I don't have a personal emotional attachment to it [the brand], one way or another. I think the important thing is that we're going to make good products. ATi may be gone, but certainly lots of discussion is going to come over the next few days about the rest of our brands and their strengths.' Could the next Radeon chip be AMD branded?"

Discussion here.
