High-Def Camcorder - 8/30/08 @ 8:34 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
As summer comes to a close, here's a nifty product that you may want to think about putting on the Christmas wish list - a high-definition camcorder...

Prices of high-definition camcorders have steadily been dropping as a result of competition and maturing of the technology. The competition is fierce as major electronic manufacturers such as Canon, Hitachi, JVC, Panasonic, Samsung, Sanyo and Sony are offering a variety of affordable high-definition camcorders.

Check the review out here, which was pretty much written by a newbie!

NVISION 08 Coverage - 8/25/08 @ 3:41 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email/Browsing
A number of web sites are beginning to provide reports out of NVISION 08. We will keep this post updated with links to their articles:

Pegasus Uses GPU - 8/25/08 @ 2:43 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
NVIDIA has showcased technology to optimize video processing with the massively parallel architecture of the GPU at NVISION 08. Using CUDA technology, a C-language programming environment for the GPU, Pegasys is taking advantage of the parallel processing capabilities of the GeForce GPU to create a GPU-enabled beta version of TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress software.

The software is used to dramatically increase video decode and processing speed by as much as 446% on a GeForce GPU.

nV News is pleased that Pegasys is embracing the capabilities of the GPU as we have used TMPGEnc in the past to encode uncompressed gameplay video clips generated via Fraps.

This news is especially exciting as we recently invested in a Panasonic high-definition camcorder capable of recording video at the resolution of 1920x1080. Video processing at high-definition resolutions requires some hefty processing horesepower.

3D Stereo Demos - 8/25/08 @ 2:13 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
NVISION 08 is underway as NVIDIA has announced a demonstration of their GeForce Stereoscopic 3D technology. Several different games will be shown in 3D including Spore, Call of Duty 5, Race Driver Grid, Devil May Cry 4 and Unreal Tournament 3.

NVIDIA GeForce Stereoscopic 3D technology is compatible with more than 350 existing games with no need for special game patches. GeForce Stereoscopic 3D is part of the Force Within, along with NVIDIA SLI technology, PhysX, and CUDA. These key technologies are only available on NVIDIA GeForce GPUs.

The games will be displayed on Mitsubishi's 73-inch 3D Ready 1080p DLP and never-before seen 3D Ready 120Hz LCD displays from Viewsonic.

The sleek ViewSonic 3D Ready 120Hz LCD displays at NVISION feature rich, colorful, blur-free video thanks to their lightning-fast 3ms response times and 120Hz refresh rate. This makes it an ideal display for extreme gaming, entertainment, computer animation, and everyday computing applications.

NVIDIA Financials - 8/12/08 @ 6:37 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
NVIDIA reported a 5% decrease in revenue for the second quarter of fiscal 2009 to $892.7 million compared to $935.3 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2008.

NVIDIA took a $196 million charge against the cost of revenue to cover anticipated customer warranty stemming from a weak die/packaging material set in certain versions of our previous generation MCP and GPU products used in notebook systems.

Shares of NVIDIA stock only dropped 1.4% as investors were warned of lower than expected revenue by the company back in July and today's announcement of a $1 billion boost to its stock buyback program.

"Our Q2 financial performance was disappointing. The desktop PC market around the world weakened during the quarter. And our miscalculation of competitive price position further pressured our desktop GPU business. We have a great product line-up and, having taken the necessary pricing actions, we are strongly positioned again. Our focus now is to drive cost improvements and to further enhance our competitiveness through the many exciting initiatives we have planned for the rest of the year," said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA.

"In contrast, the rest of our businesses did not exhibit the same dynamics as our desktop business. The notebook GPU, MCP, and Professional Solutions groups grew a combined 27 percent year-over year."

Mr. Huang added, "Though we approach the near term with caution, we remain very optimistic about the expanding universe of visual computing and the exciting growth opportunities made possible by CUDA, our general purpose parallel computing architecture."

Badaboom Trial - 8/12/08 @ 2:04 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email
Just received word that today only, you can grab a trial version of Elemental Technologies’ Badaboom video transcoder at no-cost at www.nvidia.com/theforcewithin and try it out.

Badaboom is a video transcoding program that converts video files into other formats. For example, the program can convert an MPEG file to play on an iPod or other portable device. Video transcoding can be one of the most time-consuming tasks in home computing. Converting a two-hour movie, for instance, can take six or more hours when using the computer’s CPU. However, with Badaboom on the GPU, the conversion process can be up to 18 times faster than traditional methods, getting the job done in a few minutes and, in the meantime, also freeing the CPU to handle other tasks like email and Web browsing.

Badaboom is part of part of a growing number of applications that use the power of NVIDIA GeForce graphics processing units (GPU) and NVIDIA CUDA C-programming technology to significantly improve the performance of non-graphics applications by transferring the workload from the CPU to the more efficient GPU.
