| Motherboard GPUs - 9/27/07 @ 10:11 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email |
| Wow, talk about memories, but the last time we checked out the 3D performance of integrated graphics, which NVIDIA refers to as motherboard GPUs, was back in 2004 with Soltek's Qbic EQ3702M mini-barebones system. The system was based on an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ and NVIDIA's GeForce4 MX. In that article, we checked out performance in Call of Duty, Dungeon Siege, Halo: Combat Evolved, Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, Max Payne, and Wolfenstein Enemy Territory. Fast forward three years and we find NVIDIA back in the motherboard GPU market as Inno3D and XFX both announced motherboards with integrated GeForce 7150 GPUs (DirectX 9/Shader Model 3.0) for Intel-based PCs. The motherboards support a full range of processors from the Core 2 Quad to Celeron and utilize DDR2-800 memory. For storage, the nForce630i models have a single IDE connector for two PATA devices and four SATA 3Gb/s connectors. Other features include (1) 16x PCI-E, (1) 1x PCI-E and (2) PCI expansion slots, High Definition Audio, Gigabit Ethernet, NVIDIA RAID, (1) HDMI and (1) DVI port. On board HDMI and DVI with HDCP is designed to meet the output protection management and security specifications of the Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD formats, allowing the playback of encrypted movie content on PCs when connected to HDCP-capable displays.NVIDIA motherboard GPUs for AMD platforms are also available. |

| Fraps 2.9.2 Released - 9/12/07 @ 6:19 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Email |
A new version of Fraps was released today, which features a number of bug fixes.
For example, the benchmark results (avg/min/max frame rate, fps per second), screenshots (BMP, PNG and TGA format supported), and uncompressed video clips (w/sound) in our BioShock Gameplay Performance article were generated with Fraps. Note that the video clips were compressed in MPEG-1 format to conserve on bandwidth. The full size videos (in AVI format) were captured in real-time at half the 2560x1600 game resolution - or 1280x800. A great tool for high-performance PCs. | Multi-Core Gaming - 9/06/07 @ 5:20 pm - By: MikeC - Source: N/A |
| Two new games based on Unreal Engine 3 are making simultaneous use of multiple processors. For example, the following core usage graph was generated after having played a few minutes of BioShock and then atl-tabbing back to the Windows desktop.
The second game is Medal of Honor: Airborne, which made its debut yesterday. Forum member [EOCF] Tim has a quad core processor and commented that all of them were being utilized while playing MoH. With more UE3-based titles on the way, it looks like multi-core processors will be paying dividends for those gamers who invested in them. |
