Awesome Pictures - 9/21/08 @ 9:49 am - By: MikeC - Source: Gaming Central
I was browsing the game forum this morning and came across a couple of threads that feature some incredible looking pictures. The first series of pictures, which were posted by forum member Soetdjuret, are screenshots from Crysis.

The second set features a photograph of the Hong Kong city skyline at night.

Note that the photograph in that post is a whooping 8MB in size and has a resolution of 4670x2000!

Heck Of A Deal - 9/20/08 @ 3:18 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Browsing
We've been watching the price of PNY's GeForce GTX 260 graphics card during the past week and noticed that it has continued to drop.

With a mail-in rebate this high-end graphics card can be picked up at Newegg for only $209.99.

I4U News published a brief review back in July and gave it a 9 out of 10 rating.

Update: Click on the Dell link in our PriceGrabber feed and you'll find that it's even cheaper at $199.99!

Update: The product is no longer listed at the link that was originally provided. Dell would like you to accept their apologies.

GeForce 260 GTX 216 - 9/17/08 @ 11:18 pm - By: MikeC - Source: Forum
NVIDIA quietly released an update to their popular GeForce GTX 260 graphics processing unit (GPU) yesterday. The GPU features 216 shader processing units compared to the 192 units found on the original model. Core, shader, and memory clock speeds are left to the disgression of NVIDIA's add-in partners, but expect them to exceed that of their original GeForce GTX 260 models.

STALKER Benchmark - 9/17/08 @ 5:14 am - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Should you want to test the performance of your system in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, be sure to check out our latest benchmarking article, which contains instructions along with a custom demo courtesy of X-bit labs.

Here's a snippet from gameplay performance with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 280 graphics processing unit.

A single GeForce GTX 280 is capable of delivering excellent performance up to the resolution of 1920x1200 in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. At the resolution of 2560x1600, gameplay performance in the introductory level became sluggish as the frame rate generally ranged around 40-45 frames per second. Under this scenario, a multi-GPU solution would be highly recommended.

Parallel Processing - 9/16/08 @ 8:03 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
David Kanter at Real World Technologies has published an article that covers CUDA, NVIDIA's parallel programming model, and the GT200 graphics processing unit (GPU). David has been studying this field for several months and compares architectures to other parallel processors, such as Sun's Niagara, and other GPUs. Here's a snippet:

Ironically, of the two GPU vendors NVIDIA turned out to have the most comprehensive and consistent approach to general purpose computation – despite the fact that (or perhaps because) ATI was purchased by a CPU company. This article focuses exclusively on the computational aspects of NVIDIA’s GPUs, specifically CUDA and the recently released GT200 GPU which is used across the GeForce, Tesla and Quadro product lines.

We will not delve into the intricacies of the modern 3D pipeline as represented by DX10 and OpenGL 2.1, except to note that these are alternative programming models that can be mapped to CUDA.

Check it out here.

Fraps 2.9.5 Released - 9/11/08 @ 6:52 am - By: MikeC - Source: Email
Version 2.9.5 of Fraps has been released. Fraps is a handy Windows utility that reports on performance and captures screenshots and audio/video during 3D gameplay. The updated version contains a new DirectDraw (DDRAW) video capture engine for early DirectX games and supports early windowed titles, with most DDRAW games now recorded at full speed.

Vista sound recording has been updated with the option to capture in either Stereo or Multichannel modes. Not all video editors can support multichannel audio so you can now force Fraps to record in Stereo even if you have a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setup. Other updates include:

  • Added Stereo & Multichannel recording options for Direct Stream audio in Vista
  • Added support for many DDRAW games running in windowed mode
  • Added support for games that use multiple swapchains in D3D9
  • Added large size icon for Vista
  • Fixed slow video capture speeds recording many older DDRAW games
  • Fixed capture crash for DDRAW games in XP SP3
  • Fixed misaligned audio with Vista Direct Stream when sound was silent
  • Fixed 64-bit OpenGL apps not being detected
  • Fixed long delay starting video capture on some Vista configurations
  • Fixed crash in Fraps if video capture key pressed quickly in succession
  • Fixed Fraps exit dialog appearing at random intervals
  • Fixed "This program might not have installed correctly" error in Vista
  • Fixed corrupted volume slider in Vista when Fraps loaded
  • Fixed scrambled colors when recording in 8-bit and 16-bit from some older games
  • Fixed crash loading levels in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

NVISION 08 Blog - 9/09/08 @ 6:31 am - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
SteveC has posted a summary of the day 2 events that were recently held at NVIDIA's first ever Visual Computing Conference NVISION 08. Day 2 coverage includes keynotes from NASA Astronaut and Commander Eileen Collins, Bernard Charles, CEO of Dassault Systems, Lorne Lanning, Film Director and Founder of Oddworld and NASCAR driver sensation Kyle Busch.

The final speaker of the Day 2 keynote was NASCAR driver sensation Kyle Busch. Just to get the opportunity to meet him made the trip to NVISION 08 a worthwhile event. It was interesting to see that most of the crowd was international and who are we kidding as NASCAR for the most part is a popular American sport. This is not to say that Kyle didn't receive a large ovation, but when autograph signing came around, DaveC and myself got to the San Jose Convention Center right around the time the session started and were first in line!

NVISION 08 Blog - 9/04/08 @ 4:20 am - By: MikeC - Source: N/A
Although NVISION 08 has concluded, we have posted a blog from a number of events that took place during day 1. We posted close to a hundred photographs in the forums, but the blog puts words behind many of them.

An opening keynote by NVIDIA Co-Founder, President, and CEO Jen-Hsun Huang followed directly after being welcomed to the Bay Area. Jen-Hsun highlighted several visual computing techniques that are being used today and what enthusiast should expect in the near future.

The visual ecosystem is a term used he used describe a common ground in which programmers, developers, and enthusiasts focus on creating a core technology. With the visual ecosystem, the audience is reminded of how much the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) effects everyday life.
