eVGA e-GeForce2 MX Review - Overclocking & Conclusion

Skip To:

Overclocking

Thanks to the CoolBits registry file, any average Joe can try his luck at overclocking when using the Detonator drivers. While overclocking results can vary from card to card, I didn't overclock the core processor speed as we already know the GeForce2 MX is memory bandwidth limited. However, I was able to run the memory at 190MHz as compared to the stock 166MHz. Here's the performance increase when running the CPU at 720MHz:

Quake 3 - Normal Quality - Demo001

Overclocking - Percent Increase In FPS

Overclocking the memory on GeForce2 based graphics cards normally provides an increase in performance from 5-15% in Quake 3. While overclocking the e-GeForce2 MX won't allow you to move up to the next highest resolution, the extra frames per second could come in handy during your Quake 3 matches.

Conclusion

I've had the eVGA e-GeForce2 MX in my system for a month and highly recommend it for the gamer on a budget. It's based on NVIDIA's reference design and the 6ns rated memory will help you reach higher memory speeds should you try your hand at overclocking. For TNT/TNT2 owners looking for a boost in 3D gaming performance, or you're building a budget system from scratch, a GeForce2 MX, such as eVGA's e-GeForce2 MX, should be considered.

And best of all, the low price makes for a refreshing change. Click here to check out Price Watch.
