mCubed Vertical Silence Passive HDD Cooler and fanAmp Fan Controller Review - Page 3 of 3
Review by Kyle Kerley -December 6, 2005
There isn't much to say about this piece of hardware. The packaging was a lame plastic bag, something similar to what a bag of $1 candy at the grocery store comes in. There were absolutely NO instructions included at all; I was relegated to scouring their poorly designed site to find yet another useless instructions card that again had German and English, each which were equally useless.

The picture above shows exactly what I got in the package, so you know as much about this product reading this as I did with it actually sitting in front of me. According to mCubed's site, the fanAmp is:
"...especially designed for 1-channel-fan systems, for semipassive cooled systems and for safety fans in passive cooled systems. The FanAmp is easy adjustable with 2 poties. FanAmp makes it also possible to convert the mainboard signals (7-12V) into a wider range from 0-12V. This features makes zero fan speed controlable with any mainboard tool. The mainboard will also be released from supplying power to the fan. The Fanamp is connected separately with the power supply and can deliver 25W permanent power."
Not exactly sure what that paragraph actually meant, I went about following the directions they supplied as best as possible...
And no amount of tinkering with the numerous unexplained dials on the fanAmp provided me with a working fan once it was connected to the fan controller. Plugging the designated 3-pin power conenctor to the PSU and the fan I wanted to be controlled to the other 3-pin connector resulted in nothing. I tried 4 fans and none worked, regardless of what the dials were set at.
I tried using the temperature sensor in between two heatsink fins...nothing. This thing would not work no matter what I did and the instructions were cryptic to say the least. Considering there were no included instructions, the instructions online were useless and product just flat out didn't work, STAY AWAY.
