View Full Version : need portable browser
I just became aware that they are monitoring web traffic at work.
I have setup an SSH tunnel between my work and home PC and can use a SOCKS5 proxy to fool them. I want to make this all portable though, so if a coworker clicks on Firefox or if my server isn't up then there wont be errors. Small footprint and self contained is the key for me here.

No problem, you little meat monster.
By the way, I found those by using GOOOOOOOGLE. "portable firefox" "portable opera".
;)
Actually, I'd known about both for quite some time. Portable Apps is a good site for that stuff. I used to run both Thunderbird and Firefox from the stick and it was damn sweet. I even used the Online Bookmarks Manager from Firefox to sync bookmarks. I wonder if the Google bookmark plugin will work now with Portable Firefox...

try this...
http://www.download.com/Torpark/3000-2356_4-10586816.html
this can be run from a USB key, and it's completely anonymous as well.

+1 for Firefox-PE, used it before, works very well. Instead of using SOCKS you may want to try using SQUID.
Also, on your ssh tunnel, consider running it on an alternate port instead of TCP 22 since it'll show up on the radar pretty quickly. You may have better luck with stunnel instead of SSH due to the SSH banner.
I'm running it on 443. That should make it detect as HTTPS right?

Well, it depends. If they take it at face value that TCP 443 is SSL it may work. The issue with OpenSSH is the server banner, which is easily discoverable.
For example, my openssh running on an alternative port:
luser@ids-m8cj4:~$ telnet mydomain 57601
Trying mydomain...
Connected to mydomain.
Escape character is '^]'.
SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_4.2p1 Debian-7ubuntu3.1
quit
Protocol mismatch.
Connection closed by foreign host.
luser@ids-m8cj4:~$
On a side note, I love getting my IDS alerts just for playing with something as simple as this:
OSSEC HIDS Notification.
2007 Oct 09 15:11:04
Received From: localhost->/var/log/auth.log
Rule: 5701 fired (level 12) -> "Possible attack on the ssh server (or version gathering)."
Portion of the log(s):
Oct 9 15:11:04 localhost sshd[11870]: Bad protocol version identification 'quit' from aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd
--END OF NOTIFICATION

Moral of the story: DON'T SURF PORN AT WORK.
LOL no porn surfing, but I guess they see me on NVN half the day.
Would it be more secure (although a lot slower) to just surf through RDP on my home machine?

No, it may use more bandwidth and it's just as detectable. You're best bet would be stunnel on 443 TCP with SQUID and authentication enabled.
stunnel, check
port 443, check
SQUID, :wtf:
authentication of what kind?

one handed typing, have infant in arms.
auth should be what your os supports, in linux i use pam.
squid is a caching proxy server see http://www.squid-cache.org they have w32 builds.

Thanks, I'll def look into SQUID.

thx holler if i can help
Opera pissed me off.
I have never tried it before now, but decided to give it a go since a few people tout it's greatness. What a pile of **** in comparison to FF. It seems like the only customization you have is the interface and limited at that. Pages loaded slower and incorrectly sometimes. Ctrl-click is my preferred tab opener, but not changeable within Opera. No Ad-Block Plus. No NoScript. I could nit-pick it to death. There is simply no replacement for FF in my opinion.
FF for life!

I liked Opera. Though there were more and more pages that refused to work with it so I'm back at FF now. Also ditched Outlook and Office for Thunderbird and OpenOffice. :D
