View Full Version : GeForce FX GPU's run extremely hot!
Just read this
When you first boot up a system with the Pro/760 card, you see the GPU fan do a quick spin-up and immediately spin down. The fan sits idle and does not create a smidge of noise. Many GeForceFX 5800 cards did this as well, as GeForceFX cards have the ability to spin-up and spin-down the fan based on GPU load. The Pro/760 does things a bit differently though. Instead of spinning up the fan during 3D applications only, the Gainward cooler only spins up when the GPU temperature reaches a certain thermal level, which in this case happens to be 100 degrees Celsius.OMFG 100C thats mighty damn hot, make sure you NEVER touch the HSF for at least 10 miniutes after you power down the computer!!

mine usually sits around 50-60c... 45c with no load

Yeah same here. But then our FX's are made by nvidia themselves and they are of pretty high standard/quality. Seems to suggest that they are cutting corners on that 5200 there.
It will be good for OEM which need quiet computers but having the cards run @ 100C is insainly hot you can cook eggs on that.

Wonder what its life span will be at that constent temp though...
i wonder if it even gets to that tempature... it might only get to 100c in some very rare cases, maybe in a shuttle case, or in a case with little or no airflow... the fan is kind of a "safety backup" for people who have those situations.
Actually I think it will probably hover close to that during gaming if the fan turns off until it hits that point...it should go like this if the FX does run as hot as many people have alluded to.
you turn on the game and play for a while and the fan stays off...with the fan off the temps will probably get fairly hot.
It'll heat to 100, the fan will kick on, it'll cool below 100 it'll shut off, it'll go back over 100 and kick on....etc,etc,etc.
IMO I would leave the fan on full blast always. Increase the life of the card somewhat. The NV30 is like the first released Athlons of the video card world; certainly don't want to run it without a massive fan.
Yeah next we will need a fan speed bracket for them 1 for the CPU & 1 for the video card :D
My Gainward FX 5800 Ultra hit 75c when the fan was running, the heatsinks were probably even hotter. Got burnt pretty bad when I touched them.
However I think the quote just refers to the fact that
"if the GPU gets over 100 c the fan will kick in even in 2D mode"
not that they actually experienced it.
Sorta like the FX5800 Ultra has a similar limit at 140 c, but I've never even come close to that.
I am surprized that hardware can even withstand high temps.

Silicon melts at about 2000ºC...
Of course your house and all worldly possenssions will have melted long before that anyway. :D

I've lost everything... My house, my car, my family...
But I've still got my precious GeForce FX! Muhahahah!:firedevil:

2000ºC, hmmm does that mean i can take the fan off my Athlon to make it super quiet ;) Oh it'll be super quiet alright pop and thats about all you will hear :D

LOL
my athlon system would hover around 70-80c, it was mainly my refusal to buy 'new' heatsinks. But they were MP's and they could handle it, worked like a champ.
You say 'worked' does that mean it's dead now?
this is 5800 only right? 5600 doesn't suffer from this I hope, if the retail version of Planetside requires a DX9 card I was going to consider the 5600Ultra :(

PlanetSide really requires DX9? Wow, its been in development for so long too? Do you know when it will be out?
heres my attempt at cooling down the geforcefx ultra:

the PCB issue was a serious one. DDR2 is too unstable without some very custom, very expensive, very hard to source 12-layer PCB implimentation and for the 5800Ultra, that was do-able for the cost (in limited press) but any other DDR2 board , not manufactured by nvidia this time, should be suspect, homey.
unless im wrong about your particular board, and its not DDR2 :\

er... i think i just read that they are not on DDR2 (hence the lack of cooling)
hmm
DDR-2 gest very hot and needs at least heat sinks to help  Also

Ive seen that pritty cool, but old.
But after seeing it im allways tempted to see what would happen to my p4 if i took off my heatsink.......
