View Full Version : Upcoming Intel CPU: Nehalem (The final end of AMD?)
More gossip about the late 2008 debut of Intel Nehalem CPU:
Well, no fun here - he didn't want to comment on the CPU core-specific performance expectations beyond the well known integrated memory controllers and interconnects. But he did say that the CPU core performance jump from the same process Core 2 (Penryn) to Nehalem would be higher than the jump for Netburst to Core 2 itself.

If half of that is true, I'll upgrade next year again :)

QX9650 launches on November, and the rest of quads in January.
If Nehalem launches on April-May, well ... i dunno what do to.

I think Nehalem will launch in Q3 or Q4 08, not in the first half of the year.
Still, such an early release would be awesome!

Ugh, don't tell me I'm going to end up buying a Q6600, a Q9450, and then a nehalem when it comes out.
I don't live far from Nehalem.

I like the song by Everclear, too.

Heh, I've never even heard this song by them. It's okay I guess, but it's quite a bit different than the songs I know them by.
Isn't Nehalem going to include 8 core as well, or is that another arcitechure?
Nehalem is not going to launch till second half of 2008. And yes, it can have up to 8+ cores with on-die memory controller, and possible on chip but not on-die GPU.

The cores will support hyper-threading as well, IIRC.

That's what I'm looking forward to along with everyone else around here.

Jesus...I am really tired seeing new hardware around the corner every time
You just buy a Q6600 and in few months it will be OLD

Everclear is from Portland, so yep it's the same Nehalem.

Well, i've been thinking about next upgrade. It's always a mess.
I think that i'll go x38/penryn/ddr2 in January.
If there's a 75% faster "single" gfx card than the 8800GTX, then i'll buy it, and a 1920x1200 screen too.
And i'll swap to the 8 cores version of Nehalem + DDR3 at the end of 2008 or later.

Any thoughts on his second part of the question? I don't think AMD will end just that abruptly, althought AthlonXP1800 may have a different reply. :p

I'm in no rush for the first time I'm not really staying on the bleeding edge,I just switched to Intel 4 months ago but for the future this looks like the way to go. I'm really happy that the video card cycle slowed down a bit but the cpu cycle is amazing.

Q3-Q4 2008, not April/May, remember there is a die-shrink in there for the Yorkfields/Wolfdales.
Nehalem will be a new socket, so look forward to at least a mobo upgrade. I'll be going DDR3 then since price should be lower and hopefully high-speed 4GB kits will be cheaper. Not to mention better latencies. ;)
Nehalem will have 2 threads per core so if you go Octa core you get 16 threads. I guess Crysis will run pretty good on that setup :D

Some thing like that, but not exactly.
