Go get it . . .
www.ubuntu.com
I'm downloading the 64-bit client to see how that performs on my laptop and on the Quad machine. Hopefully the driver support is a whole lot better this time around . . . Here's for hoping! :D

Well either my ISO is bad or the Ubuntu servers are trashed. When I get to 82% on installation, it says "Configuring Apt . . . Scanning Mirrors" and it just stops. It isn't frozen because I can still play around in the OS. What gives?
I just tried a download from a mirror that gave me really good download speeds before. Tonight, I got about 67 megs after about 30 mins. to an hour of downloading, and the download crapped out on me.
The servers are just being hammered I believe.

I finally got Ubuntu 7.10 64-bit installed last night. Apparently the servers are getting hammered and are somewhat now functional. My main rig makes Ubuntu fly! Now time to get everything going . . .
No more Ubuntu for me man, I gave it one last shot and not a week after I posted it seemed they fixed quite a few bugs, updates killed it.
Debian 4=Linux_bliss for me.

Haha. The only thing I don't like Debian for is that Compiz Fusion doesn't work on it. There are no working packages for Debian period when it comes to CF. Gotta have CF man! :P
I'm debating whether or not I wanna install this on the laptop or not. I'm afraid the driver support won't be all that great yet.

I'll let you know how it goes after I install it on my new (to me) rig. nf4 + 7900GTX.

Let me know if you get CF to work on Debian (I'm guessing that's what you're talking about).
I just installed Ubuntu 7.10 x64 on my laptop, took only 20 minutes and it runs pretty good. I don't have wireless drivers installed yet because I don't have a place to plug it into the network here at school. I'll do it once I get to my fiancee's place this afternoon.
Can anybody comment on Ubuntu + laptop battery life?

Thanks for the links. Ubuntu sure does consume some power (7.10 consumes the most when compared to other Ubuntu releases plus Windows XP and Vista) but only about 2-4 watts more. So not bad! I took a look at 7.10's power options and there aren't a ton there . . . Vista on the other hand has some nice options though.
I guess when I get my wireless card to work in Ubuntu, I can see how long the battery last. I'll keep you guys updated.

Broadcom WiFi?
Yeah. I'm just waiting for my fiancee to get home so I can hook the Ethernet up to the lappy physically. That way I can d/l the driver. :D

I love debian's approach to ndiswrapper using module assistant.
sudo apt-get install module-assistant
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i ndiswrapper
module assistant is fantastic. If I have time tonight I'll be trying it on my recently acquired 7900GTX. Fast and simple.

I love being able to apply kernel updates and not have to deal with a recompile on the nvidia drivers and/or ndiswrapper; Ubuntu did this to me every kernel update.

This is exactly why I'm done with it. Most of the fixes weren't difficult, and the OS is beautiful when everything works as advertised. I just want to spend the majority of my time USING, not FIXING the OS.
Debian 4.0 lets me do that. :) In all fairness, I'm going to try CF when I get the chance, I have no idea if that'll break x on me again, but that's a CF, not a Debian deal.

Let me know if you get CF to work on Debian. I haven't had much luck with Ubuntu 7.10 but hey, the Intel X3100 graphics accelerator isn't officially supported, aka no real drivers. GLXGears and all 3d screensavers work though. Somebody over at UbuntuForums.org got CF to work but it doesn't work for me. Guess I just gotta wait for a response.
CF's release notes say it's still pretty buggy with Etch..I'm going to pass on it.

Ahh. I tried to get it to work when I had Debian installed on a junk PC but it never would budge. Oh well. I'm liking 7.10 on my laptop, it's very fast. I just wish my X3100 would work with CF. Guess I just gotta wait a little bit for support . . .

I guess it can be made to work pretty well if you're running Sid, I may "Upgrade" later to it. I just know the end result...with me at the controls, of trying to work with a buggy compiz build. The gurus may not break a sweat, I would. :p
Glad that's working as you like on you laptop, and good luck with the gfx. Support may not be far off.

I finally got CF to work on my laptop. Turns out I didn't have xserver-xorg installed and it did the trick. CF works GREAT on my Intel X3100! Just for anybody with the same gfx card, DON'T enable reflection because X will freeze guaranteed. Once I disabled it, everything is peachy. Off to test some stability . . .
Now if I can only get it to sleep when the lid closes . . . :D

Six_storm, if you're going to obfuscate who you're talking to, you may want to take the time to obfuscate the window title too. I'm sure B3l0v3dAng3l122O would agree.
Come on, evil. You know you're bloodangel!!!!
