View Full Version : GeForce 8800 GT is not G92 ... it's G96
http://www.nordichardware.com/news,6950.html
We've been wanting to say this for some time. A while back we posted news about the next high-end GPU being capable of 3 TFLOPS, G92, and it's still stands, although "GPU" probably referred to a dual-GPU setup. We've been waiting for confirmation on whether the 8800 GT actually is G92 and unfortunately it took longer than expected, but here goes. From what we've been told, GeForce 8800 GT is based on the G96 core and not G92. G92 is not slated for launch in many months and it will be a true high-end GPU, when it finally arrives.

With the release of the GeForce 8800 GT less than two weeks away Foxconn has let the new card slip onto its website, complete with specs and board images. Foxconn's card used Nvidia's standard design and it features a 600 MHz core clock and 512MB of GDDR3 at 1800 MHz. As already rumored, the card will be PCI-Express 2.0 compliant and will feature full HDCP support. Foxconn's site has the chip of the 8800 GT as being G96 but as other images leaked earlier confirm the card will be powered by one G92 GPU. And now we wait.

This situation is very confusing. But the bottom line is no highend card this year :(

That's no problem, gives me more time to save money for a new card. :p

This has to be a first.
Other than the "Ultra" (which was practically nothing), Nvidia will not release a new high end part in 2007.
Have nvidia or ati ever skipped a year like this before?
I don't see this as a good thing.
The faster cards are put out, the more competition there is and the more prices drop and the faster technology advances (lower prices = more users = better looking games).
If ATI has been so far out of the market that nvidia just hasn't bothered putting out anything new, we have to pray for something kick ass from ATI.
This could get bad...
EDIT: An interesting timeline, though its a little outdated:

The last time anything like this happened was with the 6800 (around 1 year between 6800 and 7800). It dominated the whole market pretty easily. I think the 8800 has definitely done the same, but I stick by it that ATI better have something amazing to get themselves back in the game or we're going to be seeing longer and longer spans between nvidia's releases and very few price drops along the way.

Have nvidia or ati ever skipped a year like this before?Radeon 9800xt and Geforce FX 5950 were no more 'new' products than the 8800 Ultra. Both featured minuscule clock increases, and a gargantuan price hike. The Radeon 9800xt featured a street price that was roughly double that of the 128mb 9800 pro, and the Geforce 5950 looked no better.
Before that, there was the Geforce 4800 which was nothing more than a geforce 4600 with agp 8x support. As you've already pointed out, the Geforce 6800 also went a year without an upgrade, so it looks like this isn't the first time we've seen a year without something significantly 'new'.

Yep with no competetion around from ATi (or any other GPU vendors) dont expect any new technology or high-end part this year.
thats the disadvatange when there is no competetion :thumbdwn:

I think that it's too early to tell how NVIDIA will respond to ATI's situation at the high-end. The GeForce 8 Series continues to be exceptionally strong at the high-end with the 8800, but the mid-range 8600 was disappointing. The 8600 was a step forward in that it was a DirectX 10 capable GPU, but it was also a step backward from the previous generation when it was outfitted with a bandwidth limiting 128-bit memory bus.
Depending on the amount of memory (256MB vs. 512MB), an 8800 GT could be positioned to compete with the 8600 GTS and 320MB 8800 GTS. I'll post an updated chart this evening, but the 8600 GTS has continued to drop in price.
With the 8800 GT in production, NVIDIA can maximize the benefits that a die-shrink to 65nm will bring to their next generation high-end GPU. It also gives TSMC and UMC an opportunity to achieve economies of scale in manufacturing them, which could result in lower priced graphics cards.

And the 8800GT 512MB is already in some stores, not long until we see a review :)
If nVidia were to release the new high-end card any time soon, ATI would really be up poo creak without a paddle. The delay gives ATI a few extra months to play catch-up, which needs to happen. At the moment there is no competition. For the long term benefit of all, this delay is a good thing.

Isn't Nvidia releasing another product actually in November? The 8800GT on Oct 29, then ATI and the RVwhatever, then Nvidia againlike November 29th or something?

In the past, u could easily upgrade ur boards (GPU), but now with the revisions of PCI Express ....
When the new 2.0 boards arrive, mine is already too old to even support a new GPU, so limited again....
I really hope my mainboard still supports 2.0 in some way or another
Somebody reliable info about this?

The 6800 Ultra had a good run, from April 2004 to June 2005. Not quite the same, but still pretty long.

could we get a bios update to 2.0 from ther current 1.0a PCIe?
thx

Yes, like SATA II drives work on SATA with the lower interface speed, so will PCI-E 2.0 boards run on PCI-E 1.1 motherboards, it will get less bandwidth but PCI-E 1.1 is pretty fast as it is so it will prolly not be very noticable.

Added NVIDIA G92 graphics processors family support. Now RivaTuner's driver-level tuning and low-level features including overclocking, monitoring, diagnostics and fan control are available on NVIDIA 8800GT and other upcoming G92 based NVIDIA products.

I believe the rumors were a new version of an 8800GTS with 128 shaders and a low price point like $250.
