Discuss: PCI express 2.0 is not compatible with 1.0/1.0a, only 1.1

hey fellas...first of all hi... i have an asus a8n-vm mobo..(yes i kno it's pretty crappy)... an i might be gettin an 8800gt soon..... will the 8800gt work on my mobo?? i don mind if it doesn perform AS good as pcie2.0 but will it WORK?? also power supply is no constraint as i'll be upgradin that soon too...

Your motherboard use P965 chipset so your screwed, it do not supported PCI Express 1.1.

Intel chipsets G31, P31, P35, G35, Q33 and Q35 released this year only supported PCI Express 1.1. Here are only 1 Intel chipset X38 already supported new PCI Express 2.0.

If that is the case, then this whole thing is pure hogwash, I've had a 9600GT in a Dell box with an i915 and P4HT 3.0Ghz s775 based board and it worked just fine without issue. It is now in same said box, but now sits in a i945 s775 with a C2D E6600. Had to do a small bit of case moding to the mobo tray to get it in. Damn back plate riser.

PCI-E 2.0 cards work on any other slot....My 9600GT's worked on my old GA-M57SLI-S4 and it had 1.0 slots.

guys pcie 2.0 cards work with pci1 slots... i asked the asus tech support an they said that since both pcie1.0 n 2 have the same no of pins, u can use any card with any mobo.... only problem is that if use a pcie2 card with a pcie1 mobo, the card will be throttled an will not perform at it's max ability...

My concern with the compatibility would be ,Is it a full speed 16x slot? if so , all good.

Specs for that board mention "PCI-E architecture" or something like that I seem to remember, very odd.

I had no clue my old 478 asus board was a 4x slot till I read the manual.

You mean bottlenecked? Not really. It just won't have those PCI-E 2.0 features, it'll run like a regular PCI-E x16 card. Like I said before, my 9600GT's ran perfectly fine on my old GA-M57SLI-S4 motherboard.

Well, consider my old 8800GT (PCI-E 2.0) as a baseline. The fact that the PCI-E buss can't be a bottleneck because I recieved a fairly substantial speed boost when I upgrade to what is now my 9800GTX.

I bet I could even run this card in 8x with no performance drop. PCI-E has a ton of bandwith.
