With the upcoming boards, the new standard is gonna be 2.0 ...

So what with the people who all bought a board with those 680i chipset, or the other with just 1.0/1.0a?

I read on the net PCI Express is not backwards compatible with 1.0/1.0a, only with 1.1...

Discuss!!!

PCI-SIG announced the availability of the PCI Express Base 2.0 specification on 15 January 2007.[2] PCIe 2.0 doubles the bus standard's bandwidth from 2.5 Gbit/s to 5 Gbit/s, meaning a x32 connector can transfer data at up to 16 GB/s in each direction. PCIe 2.0 is still compatible with PCIe 1.1, so older cards will still be able to work in machines with this new version.

Think that everybody has 2 questions:

Can i plug my PCIe 2.0 gfx card on my old PCIe 1.x mobo ?

&

Can i plug my PCIe 1.x gfx card on my new PCIe 2.0 mobo ?

We'll know soon.

Therefore, you cannot install a PCIe 2.0 gfx card on a PCIe 1.0 slot, but you can install a PCIE 2.0 gfx card on a PCIe 1.1 slot. Is this ok ?

so what type of PCI Express does 680i have?

PCI Express 1.0a I guess

Is pci express 1.0 experiencing lack of bandwith with the newer cards? Or are they just introducing the new spec to force people to do more pointless upgrades?

jakup where are you?

what does 680i have?

what does this mean?

Niet alle sloten hoeven 1.1 te zijn. Het tweede en/of derde slot kan als 1.0a geïmplementeerd zijn.

Not all the slots have to be 1.1, The second and/or third slot can be implemented as 1.0a

so maybe the middle one on 680i might be different.

yes, the second pci express 16x can be 1.0a, as the pci express 8x

Thank very much, it seemed my motherboard ASUS A8N-E bought in 2005 used PCI Express 1.0 so guess I will need to upgrade my system when Nvidia release next generation card in Q2 2007.

Where do you find out which chipsets support which pcie rev? If im gonna have to upgrade my p5b deluxe for these new cards i'll be majorly pissed, and so will everyone else.

Your motherboard use P965 chipset so your screwed, it do not supported PCI Express 1.1.

Intel chipsets G31, P31, P35, G35, Q33 and Q35 released this year only supported PCI Express 1.1. Here are only 1 Intel chipset X38 already supported new PCI Express 2.0.

What about the earliest 680i, I bought the board on release. Will the new cards work with this mobo?

Well then a big FU goes out to ati/nv if they expect me to upgrade my "dated" motherboard.

680i is a just a rebadge of 590i.

I found full listing of motherboard chipsets support at PCI-SIG, at the bottom of this link (http://www.pcisig.com/developers/compliance_program/integrators_list/pcie/):

I think I may have a problem with my Geforce 8800GTX card, accorded to the listing, G80 is PCIe 1.0a, it look like it wont work with new PCI Express 2.0 chipsets? :( That why G80 was developed and released in 2006 last year, all GPUs supported PCIe 1.1 was released this year.

G84 and G86 will work fine, both GPUs are PCIe 1.1.

No way, that cant be. G80 owners cant upgrade to a 2.0 pcie mobo? WTF...

from THE source:

Q5: Then PCIe 2.0 must be backward compatible with PCIe 1.1 and 1.0?
A5: Yes. The PCIe Base 2.0 specification supports both the 2.5GT/s and 5GT/s signaling technologies. A device designed to the PCIe Base 2.0 specification may support 2.5GT/s, 5GT/s or both. However, a device designed to operate specifically at 5GT/s must also support 2.5GT/s signaling. The PCIe Base specification covers chip-to-chip topologies on the system board. For I/O extensibility across PCIe connectors, the Card Electromechanical (CEM) and ExpressModule™ specifications will also need to be updated, but this work will not impact mechanical compatibility of the slots, cards or modules. Currently, the PCI-SIG is defining the PCIe CEM 2.0 specification which has been released to members for review at v0.5. There are currently no plans to adapt the PCIe Mini CEM specification for the faster bit rate as the market need has not yet materialized.

Hmm, so that is saying that PCIe 2.0 mobos will be able to accept any kind of PCIe hardware? Or is it saying that PCIe 2.0 hardware can be used in mobos with older versions of PCIe?

I'm still on a trusty NF4 SLI mobo (PCIe 1.0a apparently), and really don't want to give it up, but damn do I want an 8800GT. Maybe i'll have to settle for someone's GTS hand-me-down?
