Hi guys.

Advice please. I need to update my old rig, and what could i get for around 100. I can build upon. I would be using it for games. But i am realistic , hense around 100.
Ive seen deals on Eb@y iam tempted by i.e. Pentium Dual Core or Athlon X2 . I can work with, when i get more funds.
As i say i am realistic. So anything considered.

Thanks.

Edit.

What is a P D C 925 actually like? Is it really that bad? Looks good on paper though.

Go for a Core 2 Duo, or Q6600 if you are just looking to update your CPU. Then you can get a $100 socket 775 mobo... but you'll also need DDR2 RAM. It's worth it over the Athlons and P4's.

I recommend you to get 46.99 ECS G33T-M2 motherboard (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130326) and 41.46 Intel E2140 Dual Core CPU (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/127249) from Ebuyer, the motherboard got onboard Intel GMA 3100 graphics and 4 DDR2 memory slots, also it accept future 45nm Dual and Quad core CPUs. Then buy DDR2 memory for as little as 10 like 1GB ADATA DDR2 memory on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1GB-ADATA-DDR2-800-DIMM-H-PC6400-1-GB-DDR-Memory-RAM-Go_W0QQitemZ320175369074QQihZ011QQcategoryZ172QQss PageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) so you can buy 2 or 4 1GB sticks if you want.

When you save up enough more fund then you could get cheap Geforce 8800GT 512MB card insert into PCI Express x16 slot and disable onboard GMA 3100 graphics. Also you can overclock E2140 to 3GHz, it will be as fast as E6600/E6700.

Best deal for 100. :D

As Athlon said. You should be able to get 2.6ghz from the 2140 when overclocked.

Thanks for the advice.
Can it really overclock to 3ghz on air with intel HSF? And stupid question now.......Is the onboard grfx any good for the time being? And is it better than a 5900xt agp? (If i dont ask ,i wont know)

And...
I dont mean to go on but how much difference is there between a E2160 and a Pentium D 925?
Thanks again.

Pentium D sucks, you'd be better off with an Athlon

Yes the onboard graphics will be good if you play games at 1024x768 or less, it on par with Radeon 9600 Pro and slight faster than Geforce 5900XT.

I am having trouble with very slow Internet connection, cant find more information about whether it can overclock 3GHz on air with Intel heatsink fan. Will do it on Thursday once the cable modem signal problem will be fixed.

E2160 is based on Core 2 and Pentium D 925 is based on awful Pentium 4 so E2160 is faster than Pentium D 925.

The E2160 is in a different league much faster and consumes less power too (good for the environment and the power bill) and therefore runs a lot cooler.

Thankyou all for your excellent advice.
I decided to go for these :

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=600158

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=434317

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=143574

I will also be borrowing(haveing) my brothers Leadtek 6600 GT Extreme as well.

It all comes to 110.

Another question if i may?
When i buy a motherboard with on-board graphics and use it with a add on card, will the motherboard performance be affected ? ......I think what i am trying to ask is which performs better - A motherboard with on-board graphics or one without on-board graphics - Or does it not matter as no to boards are the same, and both could be equal.

LORD-eX-Bu

you can disable onboard graphics in the bios, it will have no impact in the way that the motherboard performs :)

I don't know how well that board will overclock. The 945G chipset is pretty outdated.

Let me see if there are any better boards on there for a similar price.

Also, you'll need at least DDR2-800 (PC2-6400) if you want to overclock that CPU.

I highly highly recommend spending a little more money for something that can overclock... these core 2 systems have a TON of potential, it'd be a shame to let it go to waste.

Also, why is Corsair XMS the only thing they carry there? That stuff is really expensive. :o

I found this, but its working out to be more than i can afford.

Have a look at ebuyer ,you might be able to trim your costs

Budget ram might be OK if you slap some sinks on it and point some fans at it for instance

Also ebuyer has free delivery over 50
This is the checkout for the cpu at SCAN-
Net Total 40.99

Carriage 5.99

V.A.T. 8.22

TOTAL 55.20

104.49 delivered

Not sure if you will be able to do much with 5400 ram though and that 845 (845? REALLY ? 1066 + a x16 pci-e slot?) looks to be a dog ,

Save some money up or something ,Get the G33 and some 6400/800mhz ram

Having said that you can always upgrade later.

Oh dear! I hope you can cancel the order because accorded to ASUS that the old motherboard ASUS P5LD2 SE R1.0 will not worked with E2140, E2160 and E2180. These 3 CPUs require new motherboard revision R2.01G and above only. Also the motherboard will not accept Quad core and 45nm CPUs.

Oh bugger!!
Isent there anyway i can update time motherboard with the cpu?

What i mean is ( and bear with me on this ). On my old system i had a Gigabyte KT400 VAX and when i installed a new XP-M3000+ to it, it only reconised it as a really low cpu ie.100 fsb. And that was only after some mobo ajustments.
So what i am trying to say is .... if i i put my new stuff together and i get a black screen, i could lower the fsb to its lowest, boot up and hopefully update the mobo..............Am not making any sence am i?

And according to Ausus Bios update from 0501 onwards Support Quad Core Kentsfield CPU.

No I am sorry you cant update the motherboard to the latest revision, it the hardware curcuits. I checked Gigabyte GA-7VAX motherboard CPU support, it did not supported XP-M3000+.

If the items not yet shipped, you need to cancel it now or if it shipped already then you will need to return it. I found 3 motherboards less than 50 that will work with E2140, E2160 and E2180 out of box are:

ECS G33T-M2 V1.0 46.99 (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130326)
Gigabyte GA-P31-S3L 47.94 (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132269)
MSI P31 Neo-F 45.52 (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/134615)

These 3 motherboards with G33 and P31 support quad core and future 45nm CPUs but both MSI and Gigabyte motherboards have IDE and Floppy connectors, no onboard GPU that you probably wanted one. Gigabyte motherboard have 4 DDR2 DIMMs, 3 PCI, 3 PCI-E x1 and 1 PCI-E x16 slots but MSI motherboard have 4 DDR2 DIMMs, 3 PCI, 1 PCI-E x1 and 1 PCI-E x16 slots.

I am really not sure how stable and reliable MSI capacitors now are compared worst in 6 and 7 years ago, Gigabyte have very solid capacitors as ASUS and ECS.

A ASUS P5LD2 SE R1.0 i945P Socket 775 6-channel audio ATX Motherboard, IF it comes shipped with a updated BIOS from its original release it WILL work with a E2180.

Update to the latest BIOS will not affected but board revision 1.0 will be affected. I found 1 post on ASUS forum that 1 person tested E6300 on board revision 1.0 but the CPU wont worked. E6300 as well as E2180 require board revision 2.01G or above to work.
