TRY TO DIG THIS - VT-Swiching

I had a lot of post with vt-swithing and x-hanging with 4349 ( i can not install older drivers because they do not work at all with my system)


Now check this out

My system now:

ABit NF7-S rev 1.2 (8RDA+ is much better guys) - Nforce2 board
Abit Siluro 8x 4200 (non-OTES)
SoundStorm deactivated ( i have one SBLive)
LAN - deactivated (i have one Intel PRO100)

It is installed as dual boot WinXP/RedHat 9
My
TV is always connected to the computer with the cable bundled with the Siluro.

On my system VT-Switching and X-logout hang when i have my tv connected to the tv-out ... Remark : The TV-Out is not set in XFree and No TwinView configured too) and doesn't matter if the tv is on or off. My computer hangs when i have the tv out cable in the TV.

Here is one bug in the nvidia's drivers.

I tried mandrake 9.1 too .. there this problem persist too.

so.... unplug the TV-Out solved the hang prob??

I already tested 2 distros (RedHat 9 and MDK 9.1) and it was the same issue.
Just unplug the tv-out and will rezolve the problem

Yes, I have the exact same experience.

For me it also works with the 4191 version of the driver with the tv-out plugged in. The VTs get messed up, but the machine keeps running.

No joke.. The support for nvidia is terrible. They have the most part of the market (the biggest) but they do not care about support .

Take care Nvidia: 3dfx did the same!!! Now they are gone!!


I think we discuss here the problems but nobody cares about them.

@CSlayeR it's true that the current drivers are a bit unstable. But i see a lot of development between the driver versions, and a lot of improvements. So I suspect that the problems we experience now, will be fixed eventually.

I totally agree that closed source drivers is a bad thing. I don't think using 3DFX as an example is very appropriate though. They actually opened up their specs, with the result that the Linux kernel and XFree86 have excellent built-in support for Voodoo cards.

An advanced distro can pretty much plug'n'play a voodoo card all the way.

I do not think there r a little bit unstable. I think the 4x.xx series of drivers are worst than the 3x.xx. And i do not know then will be a fix eventually. Here in this forum ( I apologize if i am meen ) Andy Mercham is hiried to reply to our problems with one post that i think he paste it from somewhere else:

But for your knolegde nvidia have chipsets (nforce2) and the biggest problem is to install nvidia's accelerated display drivers on one nforce2 type mainboars (I have one and i know).
3DFX opened their specs in the last part of his life, at the beggining there were like nvidia is now (closed drivers), but if you see now what's happening, NVidia have losed the crown for fastest and the greatest videocard in the last year, and i think there is something.

One question more!

When you belive nvidia will release a new driver release for linux?

We're looking into the bug. We're aware that there have been several reports, and we're trying to fix it as fast as we can. I don't have an ETA for you, unfortunately.
