View Full Version : Do you think AMD is done...

After Intel's release of new series of dual and quad proc?
They're running out of cash, that is for sure.
Not to mention when they, in the words of Peter Lynch, "diworsified" by buying ATI, which isn't competing too well with Nvidia right now.

AMD may be done in the North American market, but far from it in the rest of the world.

They aren't even done in the N.A. market.
Heck, stepping out of the enthusiast bubble we all live in, AMD offers the best performance per-dollar right now. In my store, it is nearly an even split- half the laptops feature and AMD-proc, half are Core2s. And customers tend to opt for the AMD-based laptops cause they cost less.
AMD is just going to lay-low for awhile I bet. Last I checked, they've already managed to start reducing their debt... little bit by little bit... ;)

Well, this is a telling story...
I agree with you on that point though. I see low-end AMD offerings aplenty on all notebook and desktop options in the big box chains (Staples, Best Buy, Dell, etc).

And that is exactly how AMD will stay afloat. They'll carry the low end, and then the mainstream, then back to the high end. Just like before. ;)

personally, they scre*ed me by changing the socket right after I purchased my home-built 'upgradeable' system. They have a lot to do to regain my good will.
Intel is kicking their butts right now on CPU's and NV is kicking it on GPU's.
The Intel Q1 processors look amazing (I may have to get one).
Then in 2008-Q4 a new Intel CPU release with the on CPU memory controller. (the last AMD advantage will be gone, and a similar performance upgrade. The problem is I'm reading that it will need a socket change and a new controller (X48?)
What are we hearing from AMD over the next year? almost nothing. Quad core. so what? (and 2 more planned socket changes ??)
I really fear AMD failing, as without any competition Intel will fall back into stagnation and fixed prices again. (and NV as well??)
AMD: Please give us a reason not to use Intel.

Um, the initial Phenoms will fit right into current AM2 mobos. The next generation chips from AMD will need a new socket: AM3.
AMD will be the low-end and possibly mainstream champ from a price/performance (not targeting enthusiast) for a while. They wont regain the high-end anytime soon. But, they sure as heck wont be going under either. None of what we're seeing here is new. It's happened before. Maybe not to the same scale, but AMD has been through many similar situations. They'll pull through. ;)
The 939 socket was about the best platform they had as of late, and ditched it way too early.

They ditched 754 too early, they ditched 939 considerably early.

Agreed 100% on all points. I'm sure s754 could have handled some low-end dual-core Semprons. And I'm sure s939 can run any current sAM2 CPU as well. Currently, absolutely no need for AM2. AMD would have been better off releasing AM2 with the Phenom series. Atleast then they'd have better reasoning. Even then, I'm betting they could get by with s939 if they wanted to- though I feel that would be a bit extreme. Phenom would be the perfect time to introduce AM2. But, instead it would really be AM2+, but they'd call it AM2 instead... if you get what I mean. :wtf:

Yeah they are. I was reading a book the other day and it said AMD was done. Sorry I had to tell you.

Still losing hundreds of millions every quarter. Unable to match the competition in graphics or CPUs. Risk of buyout high as they become more and more marginalized.

Latest effort again falls short.

AMD will do fine with lower-end CPUs and midrange GPUs.
they've got GPUs in two successful consoles: Xbox 360, Wii, and probably with next-gen console GPU contracts to be inked within the next year or so.

AMD doesn't make/own/get paid for anything in the 360. Microsoft bought a design and rolled with it on their own.

I agree about them giving up on the socket 754 and 939 socket boards too soon. In fact I still have one brand new board of each sitting in my closet collecting dust. I've always been a fan of the k6-2's and slot A's over the overpriced Intel solution's. My advice to ATI would be to aim for that type of market. Which would mean to also stop trying to get people to upgrade by changing platforms every year.
I still think that a cpu integrated memory controller was a mistake.

i would still buy AMD CPUs if they would continue with 939 socket. my main PC would be intel for sure. But i still have 3 other PCs in the house with 939.

Not for long. Intel now phase out single core Celerons by end of 2007 and from Jan 2008 Intel will launch dual core Celerons based on E2140, E2160 and E2180 but with only 512K L2 cache for under $50 range.
I think that will cannibalise AMD lower end CPUs because dual core Celerons likely have same amazing overclock potential as E2140 did.

AMD's new Phenome FX processors had pretty interesting results over at TomsHardware. Its the cheapest quad core processor you can get in the market right now (sub 300 dollars) which is pretty darn impressive!

They're a joke too. The heat they give off is awful and they are power hogs too. Intel has AMD's tail whipped so hard that they won't be able to sit comfortably for years.

Q6600's / Xeon 3220's are sub-300 dollars and whip the snot out of them.
