View Full Version : AV software, small footprint, on-demand needed only
Anyone know of an anti virus package thats good for just doing on-demand scans? These days its hard to find one that isnt full of 8 million features I dont need or want like mail scanning, web scanning, I dont even need real time scanning. Just want something to scan executables from questionable sources.

Virus scanners are worthless. Find a better method for security.
(Hint: switch to a more secure OS, or just develop a strong common sense and you will go a long ways towards being safe)

Thank you for absolutely nothing... the virus scanner wasn't the only thing that was worthless. ^^

What are you rambling about? If you think virus scanner will protect you, I have a .scr file just for you.. amazingly, it will not be picked up by a virus scanner. Virus scanners just give a false sense of security.

I use Kaspersky, in the past I used Nod32, the two better alternatives IMHO... just deactivate the functions you don't want to use :D

You're thread crapping. If you want to debate the issue of AV software, make another post and argue your point. This guy had a very legitimate question. Stop being an ass.
I used kaspersky, I liked it, its just a little more resource intensive then I wanted. avia (or what ever its called) and nod32 crash in vista for me. :/
Bugme, I highly doubt it. But I'm not expecting to catch the latest and the greatest, but rather the kiddies who try to slip old configurable backdoor viruses into a program and pass it off as the original.

If that is the case, consider using MD5 or some other hashing algorithm to check if a file has been modified. It is not very difficult to bypass AV, even using old trojans/viruses - they can be hex edited / binded / scrambled so much that it could slip past.
Again, I am not just being difficult for the sake of being difficult, just my personal thoughts on the matter. :)

Anyone here try Bitdefender? That's one piece of software I actually felt good about purchasing. Small footprint, very nice features + support, and awesome scans.

I'm a cheap skate and I just use Avast!. Was using AVG until I went 64 and at the time AVG Free didn't support 64. I like Avast!. For a free product it's pretty good and seems to scan everything coming in off the net. Be it P2P, Messenger, Email and general traffic.
Also the One Care Free online Safety scanner seems pretty good at finding things, but not so good at actually removing them.
