View Full Version : GeForce 8600M GT with XP and Alias/Autodesk Maya, will it work?

I'm in the market for a new laptop and I'm seeing a lot of these great systems offering the sweet GeForce 8600M GT for the GPU. However, they're all running Vista and I cannot run Vista. My computer, while playing a lot of games (mostly CS: Source and BF 2142), will be used mostly for animating using Maya 7.01 and 8.5. As an animator, i don't need a Quadro card because I don't do realtime lighting, texturing, or rendering... ever.

Has anyone gotten a GeForce 8600M GT to run well with XP Pro? How about with Maya, does anyone have any experience with this as well?

Thanks guys,

Cant see why it shouldnt.
Only real difference I noticed between the Quadros in school and the 6800GT and 7900GT ive used at home is some delay selecting a really highpoly model, prolly since it will draw wireframe on selected objects, and geforce drivers arent really focusing alot on wireframe.. since games dont use that.

Yeah, I've been running Maya for a while on my laptop and it works great! I mainly use it to transfer my files back and forth from class as a desktop isn't suited for that sorta thing. Ha Here's a m1a1 tank that I've been workin on in Maya as a side project...

Apologies....I suck at lighting/rendering in Maya. I'm mainly used to 3ds Max and have been trying to learn Maya so I at least have experience with both. :p

Yeah, I'm just worried that the 8600M GT won't work with XP because it's only offered on laptops that run Vista. I hate Vista, and since Maya isn't fully supported for Vista yet I totally hate it.

Anyone else have experience running the 8 series mobile cards and XP, it doesn't have to be Maya specific.

It works fine.

Hacked .ini files for all the latest drivers so they will install. Works great for my Dell's 8400GS.
