View Full Version : IGN's review of Crysis
What's with people saying they beat it in in 5-6 hours??
Get used to it,its common when a big title like this hits, there are always people (liars in some cases)That claim to have beat 'it' (insert popular game of the day),(regardless of platform) in 5 hours 27 seconds, while blind folded and on 'Ultra Hard Commando level'. :D
Bull****e a lot of times....

I'm with woody on this one... the ratings are all skewed high way too often, then when something like Crysis comes out it doesn't get rated much higher than lesser games like HL2.
And most review sites aren't giving the Witcher the 9's it deserves.

I wonder how many of these reviewers are lying in their reviews. I can't recall which one it is off the top of my head but one reviewer said he jumped in a jeep with a korean solider in the gunner position and then drove it into a tree to blow the jeep up and kill the korean. I guess he didn't get the memo that says you can't get in a vehicle with an enemy still in it.
BTW, I fired up the game again yesterday afternoon after I beat it and basically loaded up the game from where the demo ends and I took my time finding alternate routes to approach the objective. Spent easily over an hour at this one location. So much more satisfying IMO. I can easily see this being a very long game if done this way.

8.5 Presentation
Considering it's an EA title, it doesn't quite have the stellar presentation levels it usually produces.
8.5 Graphics
Raise this to a 10 if you've got SLI. For the rest of us, there are games out there that look better while remaining playable.
6.5 Sound
Hang on, the game has sound? At least it wasn't offensive... and a couple of the guns were kind of meaty.
8.5 Gameplay
The massive range of ways to clear any given situation help overcome the lack of narrative and pacing.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
Ten to fifteen hours of singleplayer, with a solid multiplayer offering that nobody will play due to extreme system requirements.
8.3
Impressive OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

More from that review ^^^
Closing Comments
For the 0.2% of the PC market that has an SLI system, Crysis is the shiznit. For these lucky few, mind-blowing graphics elevate what would otherwise be just another solid shooter into the realm of must-have gaming. Sadly, for those of us without golden toothbrushes, private jets and PCs from the future, it remains just a solid shooter, that isn’t in quite the same league as other recent triple A releases.

This will be one of those games we will play through with not so great settings, then pick back up a year from now when we have better hardware. Oh well, I played through Far Cry on my FX5200 at 15-20FPS and then played it again when I bought my 6800GT. ;)

Kinda like me and oblivion. I played countless hours through with my 6800GT and then my 7900GT at mostly high/medium settings and now I'm ripping through it again with all the upgraded texture packs with all graphics settings maxed out pegging the FPS counter at 60 the whole time.
Crysis... ehhh.. yeah it's a real visual treat on very high settings which is how I played through the game but I assume next year or whenever it is that they decide to release the more demanding shaders, I'll play through it with the same slack jaw and dumbfounded yet amazed look on my face.
I'm playing through the game again taking my time and approaching combat in a much more slow paced and methodical manner this time but I still find myself just as wowed with the graphics as I was the first time through. I mean, there are so many points in the game where you first lay eyes on certain special sprawling valleys or scenery that you can't help but just stare at it and even though I know what views await me and I know exactly what something is going to look like this 2nd time around, I'm still finding myself staring at it in disbelief.
It's pretty much the same way I was with oblivion. It looked great (so I thought) right out of the box but after the new textures were installed, it went from awesome to :headexplode: and I can only imagine that crysis will be the same way when they release the other shaders.

yep, i've given up on playing it right now. I've spent more time trying to get the thing running at a decent rate while still looking good than i have really playing it. Kind of ruins the enjoyment if you have to keep going in and tweaking things every 5 minutes. I'll let it sit there until a) some sort of miracle patch comes out which makes it playable or b) new hardware is released (i'm hoping this rumoured g92 gts is good).

See, I spent nearly a week straight with the demo doing that so I would be ready for the retail version. Seeing that you have the 640mb GTS, and after working with my brother's system that has the 320mb GTS, I discovered that the best playable and best looking blend for his system came from starting off with all setting on the right hand side of the advanced effects set to medium except water and then bumping shaders, texture quality and object quality to high and lastly, editing the game.cfg file to include sun rays, battle dust and parallax occlusion mapping.
I really couldn't notice any substancial visual difference between those settings and all high settings when watching the time demo and at 1280X1024 with AA off, he was benching an acceptable 25~30 fps. I'm sure you could bump up shadow quality and physics and get the same results, if not better results.
You could use Hardocp's review of the 8800GT as a reference since the GT and your GTS are so similar.

that whole review could have been summed up with: "plays same as demo, takes about 10 hours to complete, crap ending".
It didn't play the same as the demo though. The gameplay changes as soon as the aliens are introduced.

As soon as I saw 6.5 for sound, I immediately erased the review from my mind. What a load of bull****. The sound and music was supperb and added a heck of a lot to the atmosphere. Everything about that review is utter trash, especially marking down the score on the graphics just because they can't afford a PC to make it look better. The game is capable of amazing graphics. The best, and that's what it should be marked on.

yeah once you get the sniper rifle, the game's cool factor increases ten fold and adding the sniper scope to the demo doesn't count becuase the setting isn't as well setup for long range picking off fun from high up on a mountain.

Yeah, esp. the grenades. I think they have a great sound.
