Verizon kicks up the speed

Verizon continues to offer the fastest Internet connections to homes with its FiOS (fiber-to-the-premises services) in the U.S. This does not compete with some parts of Europe and Asia that already have 100Mbps connections. FiOS currently tops out at about 30Mpbs peak for download. Verizon is about to take the lid off of something big, which will boost speeds to 200Mbps.

The new technology is called GPON, or better known as Gigabit Passive Optical Network. This technology allows Verizon to deliver 2.4Gbps down and 1.2Gbps up. Most users will be unable to find a server that can deliver that kind of continuous performance. Most consumer equipment, e.g., switches, routers, and hard drives, will not be able to even come close to being able to keep up with a maxed connection, assuming that the user could find one.

The conversion to GPON is fairly easy because techs only have to swap out the boxes on each end of the fiber to make it happen. All new installs will feature GPON moving forward, and Verizon will upgrade existing fiber runs if it sees a demand for the service.

You know it will happen at some point.

Well too bad I live in Illinois and it's ATT territory and ATT's fiber service are a long way from happening, so all we have is Comcast :/

I can't even imagine internet that fast.

I have 3mbit\320kbit and I'm overall pretty satisfied with it.

Getting ripped off with the price though because I live in the sticks.

I believe that GPON is capable of delivering even more than 200mbits a sec.(Think around 450 IIRC) It has been in the works for a while, so not suprised that it is getting closer to deployment. Retsam would be the man to ask about this topic.

EDIT: Actually it's quite a bit more, this is from Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passive_optical_network

The ITU-T G.984 (GPON) standard represents a boost in both the total bandwidth and bandwidth efficiency through the use of larger, variable-length packets. Again, the standards permit several choices of bit rate, but the industry has converged on 2,488 gigabits per second (Gbit/s) of downstream bandwidth, and 1,244 Gbit/s of upstream bandwidth. GPON Encapsulation Method (GEM) allows very efficient packaging of user traffic, with frame segmentation to allow for higher Quality of Service (QoS) for delay-sensitive traffic such as voice and video communications.

Is it just me or FiOS sounds like fancy name for FTTH (Fiber-to-the-home)?
I bet they are throttling the connection too :P If not yet, they will very soon because such users will suck all their bandwidth :P

They advertise it here but only 5mb speeds. The cable guys offer 6mb speeds. Me I have dsl and 1.5mb speed. I don't paying the high prices they want.

QFT. I have ATT and it sucks. I wish I had comcast. I wish even more I had the verizon FIOS stuff.

This is half of the effort needed for FIOS to support additional HD channels.
(150 new HD's to be added by 2008 year end)

the other half, is that their initial FIOS build has only ONE central office from which to push the TV channels, on-demand, ...., and they are obviously bottlenecked there.

These are the main reasons that FIOS has not delivered new HD's so far.

but back on topic: where are we going in the next 2-3 years where we could use more than 10Mb in the home. There are no general use servers capable of pushing the data that fast. sometimes I get to 5Mb/s download, but thats rare.
Currently I can download 3x 50MB files concurrently in 1-2 minutes.
The 2 gig crysis demo took about 30 minutes (server load)

Personal opinions:

Had Comcast, their signals and support stinks. Old infrastructure and no investment?? Got worse after TimeWarner took it over in our region. (based on assisting family experiences) I can't even watch my brother in laws plasma. Part him and setup, mostly crap signal :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn:

Had Direct TV: Good at the time, but I got tired of having to spend $400 every 2 years to replace my equipment (AND do the work myself). I also don't want their reduced resolution HD.: (and was getting very expensive for what they offered)

FIOS: So far, so good. I have zero to complain about. It all seems to come down to the subcontractors: Those who lay the fiber lines in the neighborhood, and the installer who connects up your house. (some funny and truly sad stories out there about these)
Game ping times are amazing over my previous Comcast. I easily find many servers with sub 20ms pings. (even had 8ms once/twice):p

Right now, If I had to relocate, FIOS service would be a near requirement.
(No I don't work for FIOS)

I'm still waiting for 20/20 in socal...Right now I'm on 15/2, which is OK, but 20/20 would be sick, and I can't imaging 200/200.

By the way, currently there are 0 reports of Verizon throttleing...I can attest to it myself...Just an FYI...

**EDIT** Looks like Monday 15/15 goes live in Socal...I'll be upgrading for sure (I think it's like $15 more a month)...

I have fios 20/20 and right now I'm seeding a torrent at 2.4mb up. No throttling here (even before I got 20/20 service and was 20/5. 20/20 was basically a free upgrade).

Im pretty sure theres no throttleing. I upload a few terabytes a month. Never got a call or anything bad about it.

Talked to Verizon today, they are upping the speeds in all areas where FIOS is in place. Some areas will take longer as they test inplace hardware to ensure it can handle it. Apparently some stuff they are using is a few years old.

I talked to a tech a few days ago Florida will have 20/20 before the end of the month and it will be an extra $15 a month over the 20/5 service. He also said he heard talk about a free service upgrade for everyone shortly into next year.

lol the fastest in australia right now is 24mb adsl and that's bout it. Unless I'm missing out on something..
oh well at least when i move to japan they will have faster internet but i don't think I'll be able to afford it lol.

The problem with 200/200 and even 20/20 is that the internet is not ready. I have 15/2 now with TWC but off their network you top out about 6 - 10 MB/sec. Using newsgroups or to other TWC customers I can max my connection. So while 200/200 looks great, until other routers on the internet get upgraded you'll never see anything close!!

The other problem with FIOS is that they come in and rip out copper. So if you ever cancel you have to pay to have it all reinstalled back into your home.

Utorrent will max it out. And get VOIP if you ever cancel. Who would cancel fios anyways?

ATT might terminate your service if an ATT employee sees your post.

Best I can get here is a 8mbps pipe, and I get throttled if I run torrents for more than two hours.

I also now know they are doing deep packet injections, tested and confirmed it a month ago. :(

I would kill for FIOS, and a clean pipe.

what about if you enable packet encryption?

I moved up to 15/15 (no 20/20 in my area) and it's great. I've had Fios for 1 and 1/2 years and I couldn't be happier. If you ever want to cancel Fios, you can still keep the fiber phone, so I don't see what the big deal is about getting rid of the copper...Doesn't bother me in the least...

Always encepted, and always on Linux. I don't even have a windows client installed.

I use the ipfilter built into ktorrent. (bluetrack) and I am running a custom script that uses bluetrack block lists level 1 and 2 peerguardain for Linux.

If I am dl any "popular" ;) torrents the script will execute and iptables will be blocking as normal, but then it gets jacked somehow. I think it's related to the deep packet injection. All the log shows is ip_queue read failed.

I tested the packet spoofing using wireshark with a friend from the UK. There were to many differences in the sent/recieved packets for there not to be some sort of ip level tamperng.
