I'm about to upgrade a system for a colleague, who wants it for graphics work and gaming, with a view to running Doom3 when it finally arrives. He'd like to have a go at overclocking too, here's my spec:

Motherboard: Abit NF7-S V2.0
CPU: Athlon XP2800 Barton OEM
Memory: 1Gb Corsair XMS 3500 (2 x 512Mb)
HSF: Thermalright SLK900 with 80mm Thermaltake Smart Fan II

He's already got a GF4 Ti, but will be wanting an NV35 when the price is reasonable. Would this system be able to do an NV35 justice? (assuming it's as good as R350).

Could this be improved? I wondered about the Barton 2500? Will this OC as high as the 2800?

The Barton 2500 should'nt have no problem overclocking to a 2800,it really luck of the draw how far it will overclock, some do great and other's not so great.

If your going the barton route, I'd suggest going all out on the mobo and getting an Asus deluxe with that 2500+. You don't want to skimp on the mainboard.

skimp on an nf7s 2.0?
you're kidding me right?

although i did not own a 2.0, i had a 1.2 for a brief period and hit 240fsb sync with 2.0-2-2-5 timings, if the asus can do better then get it

Doesnt the nf7s only suport up to 333 fsb? That's why I thought it might be better to go with the Asus board for the 400 support. I'll check up on it.

If he's doing gfx editing, and gonna be running DoomIII, he'd be better off getting a P4, as most gfx editing software uses SSE2 as will DoomIII.

But a 2500+ would be good as well if you want to go the Athlon route.

All nForce2 boards should have the ability to handle the upcoming 400 fsb processors. I didn't know that Abit was releasing a 2.0 version of the NF7-S. Had I known I would have waited. Not that I'm complaining about my v 1.2 board. ;)

Yes Abit has release rev 2.0 of their NF7-S board and the bios does support 400mhs fsb cpu's and you can pick one up from New Egg (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=nf7%2Ds) for $125. Although they don't guarantee you'll get a 2.0, if you check the feedback, everyone who has ordered this month has gotten one, so the odds are good.
