GameSpot Crysis Hardware Performance Guide - Must Read!

Alright, Gamespot has a good Hardware Performance Guide. The screenshots of the different options are priceless as you can gauge what to drop to medium and what kind of performance you will gain plus how it will affect the IQ.

If you haven't see this yet, it's a must read. Seems like dropping shaders to medium will kill the HDR but ~20 FPS gain. (I haven't tried it yet to see what it looks like, I'm at work but a buddy of mine did and said he gained ~19 - 25 FPS and cannot tell the difference in IQ) Now that would make things more playable to me, I've never been a big fan of HDR anyways. And if I can give up HDR to enable AA I'm all about that.


Looks like the shadows images might be messed up. I think Very High and High were swapped. Either way I had been setting shadows to Med, looks like they only got a few FPS from taking shadows from High to Med. Not really a worth gain now that I see their results.

I'm not trying to be an ass here, but I don't find that guide useful. Actually I couldn't find a single piece of useful information and the bit I found is not something that I hadn't read in either of the following two guides which I would much sooner recommend:

And btw I notice a pretty good difference between medium and high shaders. For me I get what I pay for in FPS.


Anyways I guess that GS guide can be alright if you've not played crysis yet or have absolutely no idea where you stand performancewise with some specific system specifications. Tweaguides.com also had those low, medium, high, very high comparison shots of each setting, but it's always nice to have more I guess :)

I don't see any screenshots in your listed guides?? The Gamespot guide has screenshots of all the different quality options. Maybe you missed those as thats what I found to be most valuable. Nowhere else has anyone posted IQ comparisons of each of the visual settings. I don't understand what "For me I get what I pay for in FPS" is supposed to mean ...not quite sure if you are impying that we should be happy with crappy frames and high end hardware as all the other new games that have come out run great for me.

No I meant that while the change from medium to high shaders may have a somewhat significant impact on performance, for me it has an almost as equally impact on imagequality as well so I think it's totally worth going high shaders at least. That's with my spec, I have no experience with what's worth the sacrifice on midrange cards..

I looked at the shader quality side by side on that tweakguide and to be honest that just solidified my thoughts about medium shaders. Check the pics.

As a Framerate freak I would sacrifice a touch of IQ for more frames and it seems that changing Shader Quality is going to give you the most bang for the buck imo. I'll try it tonight and see but from the screenshots on GameSpot and yours on the Tweakguide its looking like Shaders to medium would that one setting worth dropping to gain some performance for those that need a few more frames to keep Crysis playable.
