This is what happens to many of the textures in crysis that gets shaded (not having direct sunlight on it);
All settings on Veryhigh!

And there is plenty of more. It looks like they use some kind of specular lighting or lightmapping to hide lowres textures. What do you think about this?

Its a normal map.

There is a bumpy layer over the texture to make it more detailed. The bumps only show when they are lit from an angle. No light, no bumps.

If the "color" part of the texture was the same resolution as the normal map, the game would use twice as much texture memory.

Some day they'll be able to get around this, but with every object having 2 or more textures (and some being displayed as 3D surfaces with Parallax mapping), there just isn't enough memory to have them all super high res.
