XtremeGamer not that great. Go for at least the XtremeMusic. Now discontinued, so you'll have to dig around some FS threads at [H] or Anand.

Funny, I was just talking about sound cards yesterday.

I would not go with a Creative card with Vista. Driver issues all over the place.

Go with an Auzentech Xplosion or Prelude. Or go with the HT Omega Striker/Claro.

My understanding is the current Extreme music isn't a true X-fi.

You need Xtreme gamer if you want a true x-fi. Could be wrong but you might want to research.

(I have the stripped down card in my other box)

The XtremeMusic (discontinued) was always a "real X-Fi"

The OLD XtremeGamer wasnt a "real X-Fi"

The NEW XtremeGamer is a "real X-Fi" but with non gold connectors so prone to corrosion AVOiD!!

The XtremeAudio was never a "real X-Fi"

Any card with an X-fi chip and GOLD connectors is good

Probably not. Creative owns the retail chains, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the best product.

If you can wait a day or two for them to ship, Auzentech and HT-Omega are much better cards. If you're looking for high fidelity audio, I would go with either the Prelude or the Claro as their SNR is a bit better than the Xplosion/Striker.

I would have recommended an Auzen card, but he said gaming only, so it's best to stick with Creative.

Unless, of course, you go with the $200+ Prelude.

I like my xtremegamer x-fi in vista so far.. not sure about the corrosion thing but my turtle beach didn't have gold connectors, still works like a charm.

I think the question you need to ask is what is plugged into the sound card? Are you using a 2.1, 5.1, or 7.1 sound system? What good is a high end sound card going to do if you only have two speakers, and a small sub woofer?

I see this all the time you might be better off buying speakers, and a better sub woofer, also are you going to use your card for encoding, if so then a pure gaming card might not be what you want.

Yeah, I just have 2.1 speakers, so I don't need anything special, all I do is game (lee63)

Do you use headphones at all? If so, you might seriously want to think about a true X-Fi card..... amazing headphone 3d sound :)

Great sound card.... :) Looks like they have changed the names of their card packages a bit, but that looks to be the same package I got a year ago. (lee63)

You do know the Prelude uses Creative drivers right? Also my X-Fi has worked flawlessly under Vista 64 apart from the drivers that were posted then pulled a few days later. :o

I really really wish Creative would stop re-releasing the same soundcards under so many different names. It becomes very confusing for people looking to buy. It's even worse when some X-FIs are just repackaged Audigy 2. :(

Yeah, I know. But they haven't had nearly as many problems working in Vista as Creative's line has. I've personally witnessed several of the X-Fi line that either wouldn't work at all in Vista 32 or wouldn't bring up the audio control panel--even after installing the hacked driver that they released on their website.

 That's right.. don't bother offering any proof contrary to my claim; just holler BS.

I build systems for a living, so I'm not just talking out of my ass here. I have seen several instances where Creative cards did not work properly in Vista. Hell, Creative had to release a driver that they actually charged people for on their website just to get the audio panel on many of their X-Fi line to work on Vista 32-bit. They just did that about 2 months ago. People got pissed off for being charged for a driver for a card they already owned, and then had some hack into the site and steal the driver.

It's been a mess.

I honestly haven't heard of any problems with Vista drivers for the X-Fi. I haven't had any myself. Especially now that the control panel can be downloaded for free.

My brother has an Ausentech Xplosion and it took them nearly 6 months after he bought Vista to get a single working driver for it. He couldn't even use his card in Vista and had to dual boot and use XP until they finally released it in May or June. He still has problems some times too.

My X-Fi on the other hand, has had no major issues from the beginning.

A few control panel quirks here and there, but they have been ironed out for 6 months or more.

Not to mention the OpenAL and EAX support...

If you have an analog sound system and you play games, X-Fi is the best choice. If you have digital though, you'll need something from Auzentech to get surround sound.
