This is why I'm not getting a Geforce FX. You gotta read this...

Is that really the reason or is it because you stumbled across something on the world wide web that as an Ati 9700 user you'd thought you'd have " a dig " ?

Screensavers were popular until powersave came into being a few years back which not only saves your screen but actually lowers the power consumption and saves the planet ;)

You all might want to keep a Class C fire extinguisher next to the case if you gotta run somewhere fast.

Class C Extinguishers are suitable for use on electrically energized fires. This class of fire extinguishers does not have a numerical rating. The presence of the letter “C” indicates that the extinguishing agent is non-conductive.

I wonder if UL will get involved in this anytime soon?

UL - Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.

UL Standards including Electrical and Non-Electrical Standards and Draft Standards, and UL Directories of Certified Products: Automotive Burglary Protection Mechanical Equipment Directory; Building Materials Directory; Electrical Appliance and Utilization Equipment Directory; Electrical Construction Materials Directory; etc.

You all be careful now. :(

might need a fire extinguisher because your on the first graphics card clocked over 1ghz ever. the thing could possibly melt into a glowing ball of molten lag and children should be told to never handle it while loaded.

also its coupled with the meanest GPU active cooling ever built by a gfx company and included with the card and can be known to scare away the elderly with its whine and fire off car alarms in the middle of the night while you blister away at GunMetal.

sweet.

i wish they made sex toys.

Considering your 3dmark2001 score is so bad with a 9700 I suggest you go and sort the rest of your rig out whilst DX7 games are what everyone plays.

Unless you play DX8/DX9 3dmark03 all the time of course, in whidh case you will get 4000+ and be able to proudly aclaim it in your sig ;)

No, I guess that wasn't the main reason I wasn't getting the FX, but that's a good one nonetheless. The main reason I went with ATI is because their AIW products are badass, and an AIW 9700 is superior to a GeForceFX in that it's quieter, is the best choice for home theater (which is what I'll use it for down the road), and I don't see any FX cards that have as many features as an AIW has. This was off topic, but hey, you asked.

Can't argue with that .. AIW is excellent

I sometimes wonder if the pig that is nvidia can't **** the goat that is Ati.

But nobody would want to buy a $699 piat of course.

And things would stagnate.

It’s not the size that matters... it’s how you use it...

that story doesn't tell me anything I didn't already know. but actually even though the FX runs hot the real reason they put that ridiculous fan on it was for the average consumer who has no airflow and a cable mess in their case. It wasn't necessary for people with good airflow, just some nice copper woulda been fine. The leadtek, chaintech cards are an example, though I don't think the chaintech will ever be produced only the non ultra is on their website.

or perhaps they overclocked the card from the expected 400/800 in order to compete better with the 9700pro... and in order to do so they needed to add a massive cooler to take the card up beyond spec... seeing the negative feedback with the noise a 'run on demand' feature was added to the card... and unfortunately it has a flaw..

I am pretty sure a simple driver change will probably compensate for this issue though.. it is an expensive part.. no need for it to burn on non 3d work...

you guys see this is as a bad thing...

...i see it as the wholly legitimate reason to get to return my card for an nv35 in a few months. =)

I knew there was a reason why I didn't like the "Auto" fan idea Nvidia was using in the FX Ultra. What a nightmare!

I can see it now...leave room to make a sandwich and get a soda. Come back with sandwich/soda, and sense a horrible smell, see black screen. Jaw drops open, and first words are.....WTF!!!!!!!

That's just what Nvidia needed right now I'm sure. On top of ALL the criticism for the size, heat, under-performance and volume of the FX Ultra we now find their 'workaound' for the loudness doesn't even function as advertised and could in fact destroy your card. The whole FX Ultra thing just gives me a rash in an uncomfortable place. Bring on NV35 ASAP so we can forget about this FX mess.

Update 2: NVIDIA gave us a call and they told us they were trying to recreate the problem and that they were partially "successful". Basically, they can encounter everything BUT screen corruption (artifacts and other beasts) – i.e. the fan indeed stops blah blah. They also told us that their chips are tested in an oven to make sure they work without any problems at temperatures around 100C. So, their current conclusion is that our board is a black sheep... NVIDIA couldn’t get DiveVision screensaver to work "as advertised" but OpenGL Pipes and Matrix Reloaded worked fine.

Can somebody with a 5800Ultra try this please. It would be good to see other peeps real life experiences with this 'issue', which if true is very serious.

Thanxs.

:lol2: lol, your asking people that own a £400 graphics card if they would mind trying this to make it overheat? ;) Im sure u will get loads of takers.

Its not a serious issue though really, its just a driver bug at best. There is a 'fail safe' setting if the core gets to 140*c that it throttles back but i think this needs some serious adjusting. However maybe 140*c is the limit before serious damage occurs (not just artifacts/curruption) so...

I seriously hope that the card gets nowhere near 140 degrees Celcius. Do you have any idea how hot that is? Water boils at 100 degrees C (212 degrees F). 140 degrees Celcius is 284 degrees Fahrenheit. I would think the card would meltdown well before this.

RobHague

Yes i do know how hot 140ºC is, but like i said it needs some adjusting...we think... however if they set it to 140*c i assume its for a reason and not just a mistake carried through every driver. Silicon melts at something like 1410ºC so 140ºc is well below that. ;) However im not sure how the PCB would fair lol.

They also told us that their chips are tested in an oven to make sure they work without any problems at temperatures around 100ºC

So it would seem they can take some heat. This is a good example of how well the cards seem to cope actually...

We feel its really impressive that 3dMark (or any other 3D application that you start after the screensaver does its "magic") does not crash, instead just hangs and then continues on when the cooling does its job.

When the fan kicks in, it cools down the card fast. In other words, when it works, the cooling is excellent. Too bad its so noisy (and annoying - sound is very high-pitched).

This is a simple thing to fix, all they need to do is set a fail-safe to 100ºc less and the problem is solved.
