View Full Version : Most overrated game ever?

I'm sick and tired of reading reviews of games that score high because they were hyped and the public bought into it. What do you think the most overrated games out there are? I know of a few, but some people will probably disagree.

Deus Ex--I still have yet to see what's fun about this game. Yes, I see the appeal, and I can understand why some people like it, but it's so enigmatic and dull to me. Based on all the positive opinions of this, I've tried to like it; I've installed it at least 3 different times, trying to get into it, but never have.

System Shock 2--I have to give this game credit for the atmosphere and for the rather slick interface. I'm playing through it right now, but I'm having trouble staying interested in it.

Black and White--This game was awful. Hype, hype, hype, I bought into it... and what a letdown. There was nothing to do in this game that couldn't be done in any other strategy game... except throw dirt and people around with your animal, which was about as interested as Postal 2.

Warcraft 3--90 unit cap. Cheating AI.

Unreal Tournament---At the time I bought this, I was playing Counter-strike and TFC, two games that were free. I tried to mix in UT with playing the other two, but I became bored with it quickly. Sadly, low-grav instagib was the only game mode that could keep me entertained.

Master of Orion 3 - despite what all the previews and beta testers said, it sucked.

New World Order - ditto.

Tribes 2, Halo - both are good games, but don't deserve the hype generated by early "rigged" screenshots with poly counts 10 times higher than those in the final game.

Dagoth Moor Zoological Gardens - it was never a game to begin with :)

Black & White and Creature Isle: Sure, the eye-candy was nice, but the fun stopped there. Ick. Worst money I ever spent (almost full price, alas). And then there's the hours of my life that I'll never get back (yes, I felt obligated to play it for a while).

Ground Control: Yes, I can hear the cries of, "Are you MAD?" but I really just couldn't get into it. Homeworld and Cataclysm rank in my best ever games, but GC just didn't do it. I'm glad I only payed something like $8 for it at Circuit City! I might pull it out again just to see, but I've got a bit of a gaming backlog at the moment.

And then there are the underrated games that I thoroughly enjoyed...

Throne of Darkness: Sure, there were some interface issues. But it was samurai vs. zombies, man! How cool is that? And for $7 at Target, it paid for itself many times over!

Requiem: Avenging Angel: A reasonable engine (for the time) and some fairly interesting gameplay and effects (pillar of salt and blood boil in particular). Still some suckage with the interface, though. But fun enough, especially for $3.

Cheers,
JND

Black and White. Yeah.

Tribes 2... well, it wouldn't have been if they had waited about 9 months to release it.

Argh. That game kicked ass (TANKS, BABY, TANKS!).

Black and White was cool for about 3 hours and then I got bored with it.

Tribes 2, need I say more?

Any my own most overrated game of all time - Red Faction. I saw the tech demos of the game engine and the screenshots sure looked nice. But the graphics sucked. The gameplay sucked. And the AI was among the worst I've ever experienced. I sure am glad I didn't waste my own money on that garbage.

Warcraft 3 is possible the most overrated game ever, it was terrible. I could never get into it as it was so boring, it lacked all the fun that Warcraft 2 had, and the simplicity too.

Unreal tournament 2003(ooooh!):D

I just can't get into this game, Unreal tournament I enjoyed slightly online. Its just like unreal tournament just with a couple of weapon changes and different maps. The speed of the game is just not fun. Then again I prefer more down to earth shooters:cool:

ut2k3 and unreal II

both of them look quite nice... but my goodness... do they ever stink up the big one in terms of playability :(

as far as deus ex is concerned :)

that game has given me countless hours of pleasure...

Super Mario 64. It was good but not nearly as amazing as so many people insisted when it came out.

Shortass.

I'm suprised at the amount of WC3 haters. Sure, it's not as simple as 2 and it has a low limit, but think about it. In WC2, every unit was identical to that of the other race (next to the casters). There was so little strategy other than mass the best unit or fully upgrade them, it got boring fast. This is more like Starcraft, where each race as obvious advantages/disadvantages and has many more hours of b.net playability. It is a LOT harder, i'll give it that, but it makes it more interesting.

As for the most overrated game, I think games like UT and Doom are terrible, though the graphics are quite the opposite. (too fast paced, no real strategy or skill, just jump and shoot)

doom overated??? doom was a benchmark for nearly all games to come.

imo the most ooverhyped game ever was trespasser... my god. an fps set on one of the jurassic park islands??!! how could they go wrong?? but... wrong they went.:( i cant believe i spend $50 on that game to try to stack boxes all day to jump on. most frustrating game ever.

I'd have to say WC3, Tribes 2 and UT2k3. I got about 1 hour of fun out of each of these.

Trespasser wasn't really overrated. I don't think it got any positive reviews. It sure was overhyped though.

It puzzels me why Unreal had a moving, animated sky, while Unreal 2 does not. Seems like a step down huh?

I like it too...."love" is just too strong a word for games these days...
I keep wishing I had more. Of something or other. But I end up playing them anyway.

Zelda64

I played Mario64 all the way through and beat it, but I got bored of Zelda64 once I hit the Water Templer. it didn't help that i'd already seen most the of later dungeons the the last boss beforehand either.

Black and White: entertaining at first but lose interest quickly.
WC3: Characters are too hard and the upkeep sucks, person with the highest level Characters wins.
Tribes 2: got bored with that quickly and was slow pased compaired to other FPS.

My vote for Black and White. Aquanox is another game that comes to mind. DX8.1 only...who cares?? The game plain sucks. I love Tribes 2. Can't get enough of that game. :D SHAZBOT! hehe

I thought that originally the first three times I started playing it. I stuck it out, though, and it gets better. Once I hit level 7 or so it got fun. Now that I'm at 41 and about 2/3 of the way through the main quest... :)

Welcome, BTW!

Cheers,
JND

I think Unreal 2 isn't as bad as some say. It's not as awesome as the first one was (and some hate that one as well) but it isn't a horrible game by any stretch IMHO... I finished it and I still pop back into it and play against some of the bosses like the spider and the drak boss/robot.

Forgot about that one. Definitely overrated. As is Neverwinter Nights.
