I purchased a evga geforce 8800 gts 320 meg card yesterday and I pretty much took all day to get it set up the way i wanted it in linux and windows XP.....I purchased a 500 watt power supply antec with 36amp with 3 12+volt.
also.. but....

I used 3dmark06 to run a test and my old crappy card ati1650 was getting 2104 and with my new 8800gts im getting 7984.

thats great.....

but i noticed that 3dmark06 had incorrect clock speeds listed.
I downloaded nvidias tool and it shows my core clock speed 576 and bus speed 792

Well on the evga site and all the listings online it claims it should be
# Core Clock: 576MHz
# Shader Clock: 1350MHz
# Memory Clock: 1700MHz

I used nvidias over clock tool and the slider only lets me move it to 1100 for the memory clock.

What is going wrong here?

should i take the card back ? is it defective? or is there something IM not doing or what.... the specs of my computer are.....

AMD 64 Athlon X2 +3800 Dual Core processor
2 gigs of ram which should be 667DDR2 but for some reason is only going at 333.

so what is the deal with the frequency's?

also should I have just bought a cheaper video card maby a geforce 9600 GT because it seems like it has about the same clock and core thats showing up on my programs in linux and windows when its probed?

792x2=?

what he said you times it by 2.

Well if my "overclock" tool from invidia lets me slide the bar over to 1100......is that in reality making it 2200?

And if there program is probing whats going on.....why would it want you to multiply the bus speed by 2 and not the core speed?

or would you multiply the core speed by 2 also?

I dont know , this seems confusing to me.

Sience I have a mid-grade processor should I buy a 9600 gts and get around the same framerates? or would that be a bad move.

Ohh.......So actually on the graphics card.... and my regular system ram...it will always show 1/2 the speed because its that speed but doubled....

Thanks guys.....I was really feeling that I was being taken for a ride with this card....

So I think im gonna keep it....I love the speed Im getting, I just really couldn't figure out what the #s actually meant.

About the linux part......I really love it and 1/2 the reason I bought this card was to get compiz and beryl running......

but now that I know this cards a keeper Ill try to figure out whats the best AMD chip for my motherboard cuz I need to get a better one.

ohh lol.....I meant 8600 GTS.....

I just switched from being a ATI fan to hating them......Linux dont like ati much....and I went from a 9600 ati card to a x1650 ati and now I finally got a card thats worth bragging about i guess.....

But I just wonder if i shoulda bought the Nvidia 8800 GT 512 card from bestbuy... it was 60.00 bux cheaper but I think ill just stick with what I have because I doubt there would be much difference.

MSI K9AGM

Its not that great of a board but I originally bought it because I liked ATI at the time and it was a good fit for what I was doing....

Now if i had done any sort of research I woulda got a board that would of been more ample to fit this monster in.....

I just hope getting a AMD +5000 processor and 2 more gigs of ram will keep me happy for a long time..... Im not gonna be using vista ever.....and I alreday have a ton of games so I dont really plan on buying any new ones that would be vista only.

Why in the world did you buy that card instead of a 8800GT?

Well I didnt do my homework.....but im taking this one back and getting the 8800 GT its on its way....

But right now Im getting for 3dmark06

8499 3dMark
3860 sm2
3922 hdr
1982 cpu score

this is my score after turning on dual channel for ram and upgrading my cpu today
to amd X2 64 5000+

but ill repost my new 3dmark after the new board comes in but im getting killer frame rates right now as it is.....but for 40 bux less and 120 megs more and faster frequency i had to swap it out.
