View Full Version : Some Peace Activists Won't Pay Taxes

Ellie Teplin, center, carries a large mock tax check in protest of the war in Iraq as she joins about 60 people marching in Burlington, Vt., Tuesday, April 15, 2003.
MONTPELIER, Vt. - Thousands of Americans chose not to pay their federal income tax this year as a political statement, many because they don't want their money supporting the U.S. military.
It's a form of civil disobedience some peace activists say is especially important this filing season because of the war in Iraq. But the tax man doesn't care what their reasons are.
The Internal Revenue Service doesn't treat political protesters differently from Americans who fail to file their tax returns due to neglect or greed. It says not paying can result in long-term financial consequences, including a damaged credit history.
"People need to be aware if you don't file your tax return or pay your taxes on time, you could face penalties or interest, and if you continue to ignore it, the penalties and interest could increase," said IRS spokeswoman Peggy Riley.
The National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee estimates as many as 8,000 Americans each year avoid paying some or all of their federal income tax liability because of their political beliefs. An estimated 132 million returns are expected to be filed this year.

Don't want to pay your taxes? Leave the country. My tax dollars aren't going to pay for your freeloading ass to travel on the interstates, on local roads repaired with federal dollars, in public schools that recieve federal monies or grants, et. al.
You can't play if you don't wanna pay.
Ya, I saw this a couple of days ago. These are the same people who want to raise taxes for big government programs.
Got a real thinker here. :p

Nope! Just buy them a one way ticket with a revoked citizen/passport status to some country in the middle east or France. They would be more conformable there protesting against America all damn day of their life.

It's an interesting concept, not very realistic but interesting none the less.
Figure all the things taxes go towards ordinarily that most would object to on various moral grounds, and eventually no one would pay taxes for anything.
So although, I approve of the idea, it's not going to go anywhere. Well it may land them in jail for a bit, tax evasion being what it may...

I wonder if they would bitch if the goverment got rid of there social security. Fools.

Well, they can move somewhere else and pay tax there (or protection money). Either ways, it's still tax.

actually i dont approve that idea. its not like taxes arent only spent on military issues (well too much still) but taxes (i think pointed out above) also pay for social security for instance.

you make me sick. If you don't pay taxes when you should be, you don't deserve to live in this great country, or any other country for that matter if you refuse to fulfill your obligations.

uh, read the post more carefully, I did not limit it to just america bud;)
These types expect to get off not paying their dues by making up a half-assed excuse and then they expect the rest of us to pay for their free-loading asses.
All of us get so much, heck, it is our duty and obligation to make sure we compensate our institutions in order to make sure they at least stay in working order and can better serve us, and our children for the future.
Anyone who is selfish enough to refuse to fulfill their obligation doesn't deserve to get the same services the rest of us who do pay our dues get.

is it really a political protest? or is the real reason behind not paying taxes that they just want some excuse not to pay taxes :p
I say let them have their tax evasion, but take away from them everything that taxes pay for. we'll see how long they last.

-First off, I didn't elect this government. The interstates, and local roads for that matter are a detriment to society, and nature. I'd be as happy without them. The purpose of public schools is to conform people into thinking like you. 99% of the time I spent in public school was not learning. For many people it's torment. So, If I don't want to pay taxes, you can take your beloved government and go somewhere else with it! ;)

I guess I need to clairify, I approve of the idea in the sense that it's a non-violent protest, The overall point I was trying to make was that I thought it was a dumb idea overall. You need to cool it with the knee-jerk reactions.

I say let 'em not pay and have the government ruin their credit. Then we'll see who laughs when these people want to buy a new house, car, etc.

Don't mind bu, he's a talker..too bad that's all he is.
Ya I am all for lower taxes and a smaller government but not paying taxes for what ever reason even when the rate is too high is just plain wrong. I pay way to much but I do pay it. It is our duty to pay taxes but we can change the tax laws legally through legislation.
:ignored:
ASCI Blue is in the middle. :p
I may not be happy @ my tax dollars being used for the war... but to not pay taxes @ all is an offence... and the dodgers should be prosecuted to the maximum extent of the law...
break the law and you suffer...
I hope they all get audited :)

*checks my pm tracking* oh goody he didnt read the first one! (03-17-2003)
ASCI Blue if you bothered to read the pm that had the title "warning" you would have put two and two together and guessed that your posting is drawing attention to yourself in a bad way from the mods. I suggest you read the message that was sent to you, have a good hard think about your future at this site. Hope you make the right choice.
And this is what happens when you do not bother reading a warning pm from the mods, it goes public:cool:

Too bad I can't protest the Anti-War movement by taking their tax-return checks and donating it to a "Support our troops" campaign!!! :D
