View Full Version : No AGP with nvidia driver??? (4349)
Ok, I managed to make the new driver work on SuSE 8.1, but only by setting
Option "NvAgp" "0"
So that, AFAIK, I'm not using AGP capabilities. I think that just sucks. How comes I have an AGP card, AGP 4x support on the chipset and now nvidia or SuSE won't let me use it?
The MB is a GA-7DXE with AMD 761+686B AGPset chipset
Card: GeForce2 MX/MX 400 64MB AGP
Processor: Athlon XP 1800+
RAM: 256 MB DDR
Any help will be very much appreciated.

Your hostbridge is supported by both AGPGART and NVAGP, and i've not seen other reports of problems. Are you overclocking your card or cpu at all?

I am using RedHat 9. I have a GA_7VGXP with a TI4800 SE. ;)
The motherboard says it supports AGP 8x and I suspect this is causing the problem I see.
When switching from the 'nv' driver to the 'nvidia' driver, the screen locks up and strange characters are shown in different colours on the screen. If I press something like Ctrl+Alt+Del I can hear the disk doing something, but do not see anything on the screen. Ctrl+Alt+F2/3/4/etc do not switch to text mode.
If I change the XF86Config file with "NvAgp" "0" it works fine. The same for "NvAgp" "2" (agpgart), but for some reason "NvAgp" "1" (nvagp) fails.
I have attached the XFree86 log which fails (this was created using "startx -- -logverbose 5")

Hmm, ok - i'll look into it. If AGPGART works for you, then i'd use it for now.

Actually... is AGP even enabled when you're using AGPGART?

My XFree86 log only has these 'AGP' excerpts:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "NvAGP" "2"
(**) NVIDIA(0): Use of AGPGART requested
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Failed to verify AGP usage

I had a similarly vague problem. It turned out that I did not have memory type range register support (MTRR) compiled inot the kernel. Once I added this, it worked fine.
This was with nvAGP 1, however. (I have an nForce board, which is not currently supported by AGPGART.)

No. Not at all. When x starts trying to use AGP, the log contains:
(II) NVIDIA(0): AGP 4X successfully initialized
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1152x864"
and nothing more after that, and there's when the screen goes black or, if I init in "safe mode" a lot of ASCII characters in green an white show up. Currently I'm using no AGP as i said.

when using nvidia without AGP. Do i have to get out of X to test it?
Thanks for your answer.
If I use NVAGP it does attempt to use AGP 8x, I thought this was the problem, it being new and all, but if others have had this problem with AGP 4x, perhaps it isnt that at all...
My XFree86 log shows the following just before it crashes in the same way you/I have mensioned with strange multicoloured characters on the screen:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "NvAGP" "1"
(**) NVIDIA(0): Use of NVIDIA internal AGP requested
(II) NVIDIA(0): AGP 8X successfully initialized
