The time has come to upgrade by ageing 7800GTX's. I would like to know how much of an improvement a (single) 8800 GT would give me.

Should I spend a few more an invest in an 8800GTS/GTX?

Thanks in advance.

I went from a 7800 GTX SLI to a single 8800 GTX....more than 50% improvements in fps in various games..for me it was worth it with more IQ etc

The GT is similar in performance to a GTX at med resolutions of 1680 by 1050 etc :)

I say go for it

I went from a single 7950GT 512MB to a 8800GTS 640MB, noticed a very nice difference .. i got just over double the 3DMark06 score with the 8800GTS than i got with the 7950GT!

I went from a 8800GTS(overclocked to 600MHz\900MHz) to a 8800 GT OC2(stock speeds of 675MHz\1674MHz\975MHz) 512MB .... again i noticed a very nice performance increase, not only in 3DMark06 but also in games! .... i would say deffos go with the 8800GT.

I have just done the very thing you are considering. With my 7800gtx SLI I had a 3dmark06 of 7800 and now with a single 8800gt I get 10900, thats 40% more.
Some of my games run at over twice the framerate they did before, I can now add all the anti aliasing and filtering I want.
Also, you get away from the fact that many games dont make the best of an SLI setup.

The GT performs better than the GTS with a smaller price tag.

GTX performs slightly better than the GT with a much higher price tag.

Take your pick.

I should've mentioned that I'm only going to be playing at 1280*1024. Old-ass monitor.

In summary... I'll be able to run Crysis et all, in DX10 mode, on high settings fairly well (i.e 40 FPS or over)?

In which case yes the 8800GTX is MUCH better.
