 Thats a lot of cds!!!
Why no DVD?
I don't think 6 cds cost less than a DVD. Moreover why can't they cut the b*ll about DVD drives not beeing mainstream!!!
I haven't seen a single PC beeing sold without a DVD drive for the past 2 years.

Maybe they want to make it easier for people to pirate the game. :p :D

Sheesh. And I thought Splinter Cell was bad with 3 CDs. I don't have a DVD drive on my PC, but I'd be willing to go out and spend the $50 to get one so I could play the bloody game (heck, I spent $600 upgrading so I could play Splinter Cell). That's just a silly move on their part.

Cheers,

im still waiting for games to move over to dvd... its really getting ridiculous... anyone that has the system to play any recent game, 95% of them probably have dvd drives... plus they are dirt cheap so anyone can pretty much get one.

It does seem rather retarded that they don't put games on DVD yet. I remember thinking about that back when Blade Runner came out... 4 cds, 2+ gig. The thought came to me at the time that the game would've been nice to have on one disc.

6 discs (matrix) though? Ridiculous..

If this isn't a wake up call for DVDs to start being produced for PC games, I don't know what is. I guess if Doom 3 was released on DVD, nearly every game after would be too.

<- doesn't have DVD-ROM.

I would need to be forced to get one :)

A pirate DVD in Brazil costs R$15,00 (about USD 5). 6 CDs are R$40,00 (about USD 13). I guess it would be easier...

I don't build mine with DVD-ROM Drives because I don't see Myself watching them, I get CD-RW drives. DVD-RW/DVD+RW drives are still too slow and the disk's are too expensive to be a solution for Me yet, but the Prices are becoming attractive. I'll bet that DVD's will change again anyway, once people become used to 720p/1080i hdtv signals blowing away thier 480P DVD players, there will be a change in DVD density to compete. Times keep a changin.;)

I built my computer with a dvd drive 2 years ago and have used exactly 5 DVD's in it. *sigh*

Other than having more space per disc to work with would having PC games on DVDs have any other advantages?

Higher transfer rate, tho probably worse seek times

if u dont want it on a dvd cant u just copy the game to ur drive using the dvd, and burn the contents on some cds no particular order? then it would be on cd's (maybe like 10 but yeh) yes? i may be wrong hehe:(

I don't understand what you're trying to say here. If you have a game on DVD, you need a DVD-ROM drive to be able to do anything with the discs. Going from DVD to normal CD is completely pointless IMO. Unless that isn't what you're driving at.

Exactly the reason why I'm holding off.
I'd rather have a DVD-RW drive than just a reader.
Waiting for them to mature in speed and decrease in price, though.

He's talking about piracy, Sat, or at least that's what I'm getting at.

And no, that wouldn't work at all. ;)

You can buy a DVD-RW 4x(DVD+R) for 240$.

It's easyer to download .ISO files IMO and burn them to cd.

The main way is to burn these to cd.

I'm happy with CDs and I don't mind some disc swapping for a 5 min install if your going to be getting hours out of the game. Don't be so choosy. DVD players are for playing dvds + have you ever tryed to back up a dvd ? DVD burners cost too much.

I dont have a dvd-rom either. But I'm thinking of buying a dvd-burner for archiving purposes. Also for making my own dvd-movies etc..

I dont really have any plans for watching movies on my pc either. I'd much rather use my dvd-player downstairs on the big tv.

But I agree 6 cd's is a bit much, they should at least do an additonal dvd version, with perhaps some extra features, like some music tracks, or a mini movie about the dev team and production. This would tempt ppl into getting the dvd-version, and thus help to increase the take-up of dvd-roms.

As Mr. Nasty points out, DVD backups take ages. Just too burn 1 DVD takes me close to about a hour and a half.

DVD's for gaming is not exactly a good idea since they do have a high seek time (game level load times will increase). I use my DVD-R drive for watching DVD's (no TV here...) and retrieving backups.

6cd installs are not that bad... just watch the simpsons while it loads up.

Same here. Sure, a 4x DVD-R would be plenty, but the media is too expensive and the CD recording speeds are only 24/10 for CDRs and RWs respectively.

Plus, I can think of many other ways to spend $300 that are far more useful.

Just get a $50 DVD-ROM Sy. :D
